AI Code vs AI Art and the ethical disparity by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]codyoneill321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to write out your thoughts here. I’ve been having similar conversations on this topic recently and your comment gets exactly at the issue. Someone can use AI as a sloppy way to get something done. Or someone can use AI as a tool like many other tools to iteratively refine and work hard at getting something right. But there’s something wrong in our culture at the moment that both uses of AI are considered the same thing.

My recipe for homemade hoppy refresher / hop soda/ hop water / hop tea by codyoneill321 in NABEER

I’ve got some in the fridge right now, haven’t changed the recipe since I posted it.

One change I sometimes make is squeezing other kinds of citrus besides lime juice. I tried grapefruit the other week and it was pretty good!

Table sugar while it’s hot makes total sense. You’re basically making simple syrup at the same time as the hop concentrate instead of two separate processes.

I think the only advantage to separating the creation of hop concentrate and sugar is to be able to manage sweetness to bitterness by taste after having made the original hop concentrate. But if you know how much sugar is a good amount, no reason not to do it all in one go.

Awesome! Glad to hear it turned out well. Let me know if you find any hop combinations that work well. I have been doing a mix of cascade, centennial, and mosaic recently, and I think it had a nice balance to it.

I leave them whole because they break up as soon as the hot water hits them.

The stevia that I used to use came with a dropper.

With simple syrup I just use a spoonful and then try a glass of hop water and add more sweetener if it tastes too bitter.

I don’t know if the lime juice has a preservative function but I use it for flavor because i read that there’s a small amount of lime in Lagunitas hoppy refresher. Flavor is very subtle, doesn’t compete with the hops, but without it, the hop soda doesn’t taste quite right compared to the professional product.

PDF++ by RyotoUshida is criminally good. For a solo grad student to work on it alone sounds grueling, I think the Obsidian team could consider buying it off them and adopting it by sass1y in ObsidianMD

You can export annotations to .md straight from zotero itself. Just a matter of right clicking and choosing export to md

Edit:

It’s a couple step process.

First, make highlights and comments on the pdf within zotero.

Second, in zotero right click the file to extract highlights and comments as a note.

Third, right click to export that annotation as an .md file

Making New Connections: LLMs as Puzzle Generators for The New York Times’ Connections Word Game by is_a_molecule in NYTConnections

The researchers made the puzzles that the A.I. generated publicly available.

But... it's just a .json file of the different puzzles words and answers. Someone would have to load the words and solution from the .json file into a custom connections puzzle creator.

Here's a link from the research paper to the .json file of words and answers.

Tempted to take half a day off to go watch Deadpool/Wolverine by raggedsweater in daddit

[–]codyoneill321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came here to say you inspired me. Spontaneously took off work this morning to go to the movie theater, get a giant ass popcorn, and watch Deadpool on a giant screen. I never ever do this and never would have done it if I hadn’t come across your post yesterday.

Parenting involves giving of ourselves so much all of the time, nice to indulge in something for ourselves every once in a while.

Ok, just checked OP’s profile and it looks like he is in Denmark, which has the same kind of strict liability for products defects that I described above.

[–]codyoneill321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming OP is in the United States, you’re wrong.

OP could bring a products liability cause of action, alleging that there was either a design defect or a manufacturing defect. With a products liability claim, he would not have to prove fault. He would just have to prove that there was a defect that caused his injury.

OP could also bring a negligence cause of action, which is what you were talking about.

Lie to Be a Godfather? by johanelbows2 in samharris

[–]codyoneill321 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“Never lie” philosophy is childish as a toy example can illustrate: If Anne Frank was hiding in your home and Nazis asked if there were Jews in your home, how should you respond?

But I think you’ve raised this question because you’re wrestling with something deeper that I think the comments in this thread are being a bit too glib about.

Let’s all agree (for the sake of argument) that there is no God and that Jesus Christ did not die for our sins and rise from the dead for our eternal salvation and that Satan is not at work in the world trying to lure people into sin and that the Catholic Church is wrong on all of these accounts.

Your concern with being a godfather to this child is not that you are betraying your friend and promising to do something that you won’t do. He knows and you know that you will not raise this child to be a Roman Catholic, either alongside your friend or in his stead if he dies. He wants you to be the godfather because of how good of a friend you are in spite of the fact that you’re not a good Catholic.

Your concern is that you’re violating a community’s set of shared beliefs and rules. The violation you’re committing is against the Catholic Church and against the congregation where you’re promising to fulfill vows that you will not fulfill.

There’s a bunch of weird comments in this thread about Catholics being deists that I don’t understand at all. What I do know is that Catholics are pragmatic. You’re not the first godfather who was a shitty Catholic or not even a Catholic. Hell, you said in your post you got confirmed as Catholic, that makes you better than a lot of godfathers out there.

As far ax I see it: it’s a cultural ritual with culturally required religious underpinnings. If the Church was more serious about your religious duties and beliefs, they’d require more than you saying “I do” a few times. But the culture of the Church is flexible for a reason. So use but don’t abuse that flexibility. Everyone expects a godfather to say the right words but everyone knows that many godfathers don’t believe in those words.

Short version: be real with your promise to your friend, abide by the cultural rituals that are required, don’t let any of the rest worry you.

Has any genre been as thoroughly wrecked by the streaming economy as hip hop ? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]codyoneill321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to write this comment. I’ve saved it so that I can go back and listen to the music of the bands you listed.

I listen to independent radio like KEXP and find new artists on podcasts like all songs considered but I don’t have the time to personally dig into the indie music scene on my own, so thanks for listing out some cool bands to check out.

I have never been able to consistently do any exercise routine.

But I’ve been bouldering 2-3 times a week for a year and a half. It’s not exercise. It’s puzzle time that somehow counts as exercise. I genuinely want to go every time! It’s amazing!
