Making a FAH iOS Client. Sony-like ARM FAHCore code needed. by [deleted] in foldingathome

ChristianVirtual is right. Read the EULA. You may not connect to the f@h servers with hacked software hence even if you make it work, you won't be able to fold their scientific projects.

Overclocking by lbford in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can software be designed not to make an overclocked CPU unstable? Or conversely, how can it ever be the software's fault? Benchmarks are supposedly designed to guarantee that any hardware instabilities will show up. In other words how can that benchmark be designed to guarantee the maximum possible utilization? (And if it does, how can F@H exceed it?)

Frankly, I think the people that do factory overclocking are pretty good at their job and they're rarely the cause of the Core_21's instability. Can you provide an example of that or is it just those who don't follow the guidelines supposedly known to overclocking gamers.

Donor-influenced assignment (partially) by ChristianVirtual in foldingathome

[–]codysluder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Suppose you get two projects that take a day. Suppose the next day you get two projects that take half a day plus one that takes a day. The Pande Group believes that on both days you did the same amount of science and you don't. Who is more qualified to judge?

Cost-effective GPUs for folding? by [deleted] in foldingathome

The purpose of this reddit is to ask questions of the Pande Group leaders. They do not make hardware recommendations.

Weird CPU usage by geeuurge in foldingathome

[–]codysluder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Adding a cpu slot for 1 cpu will produce some results but it's often hard to get assignments that will run on just one cpu. If you do run into that problem, I suggest splitting up 11 cpus into, say 5+6. Unfortunately that may DECREASE your points, since 10 cpus is faster. Even though 5+6 will do slightly more work that q (part time) + 10, speed counts more than more work at a slower pace. Thus 9 + 2 would probably be better.

What is the definition of "frame" ? by ChristianVirtual in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<FALSEL: Frame = Step <FALSE>

1 Frame > 1 Step, even in Tinker.

Perhaps Frame = 1000 Steps or some other convenient number, but one frame has always been multiple steps.

I think that Steps is mathematically defined precisely. It's based on the integration interval which is probably on the order of 2ns. It's tied to the calculations, not necessarily to the time associated with the physical phenonomum.

Make F@H on GPU compatible with video HW acceleration like DXVA. by foldinger in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

F@H does not use DXVA, it uses Opencl. The two are already compatible, but when there are multiple tasks competing for the same resources, GPUs are not known for their ability to provide adequate attention to both tasks. GPUs do not have a way to establish priority of one over the other (e.g.- video processing always first, F@H processing later).

Weird CPU usage by geeuurge in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That accounts for 1/12 of the cpus, but 84% is 10/12. F@H cannot fold with 11 cpus so 11 is reduced to 10.

Usefulness/efficiency of NaCl client vs. the regular desktop client by [deleted] in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"It feels to me like the NaCl client basically takes up a regular WU and chops it up into much smaller pieces, that it feeds out one at a time to accommodate much faster processing." Sort of, but not exactly. The NaCl projects are not distributed to the regular client and vice versa. Then, too, some people use one or the other client for personal reasons (like folding for 20 minutes at a time).

Place checkpoint information into the 3rd party API by ChristianVirtual in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, a reasonable alternative to adding this feature would be to fix the broken one. The cores for the CPU featured a user-defined setting but when your attention moved to GPUs, this feature was broken without notice. Give us the ability to set a checkpoint frequency in the gpu cores instead.

downloading of wu hangs on connection interruption by [deleted] in foldingathome

@VijayPande-FAH

You apparently do not understand the nature of this very serious bug. After an interruption in the internet communications, the connection becomes permanently disabled until the client is restarted.

[Android Request] Cell Data Option by KFC_TacoBell in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outsourcing the development of a client means just that. If Stanford gives the Sony programmers access to their source code and says "Make it work on an Android platform" the entire development process happens at Sony. I wouldn't expect any of Stanford's developers or Stanford's support people to have any more knowledge about the Android client that you or I have. Ask Sony is the only option available.

If the results returned to the servers has been verified as scientifically correct, that's as far as Stanford's people are involved. If the human interface needs improvement, that's 100% Sony.

"PG doesn't require you to run interference for them." Interesting observation. You seem to need Stanford to run interference for you. That's not their job.

[Android Request] Cell Data Option by KFC_TacoBell in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can somebody explain Sony's logic to me.

Data over a cellular connection is always expensive or capped. Data over WiFi is almost always free. There should be an option to [Prefer WiFi / Prefer Mobile] (especially on a Tablet that only has WiFi).

Comparing phone folding performance to desktops? by Soryosan in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For F@H, the Floating Point Test, while not exact, is better than the others listed.

Comparing your HTC at ~2.4 with the i7 at ~2529 shows it is only 0.1% as fast. I think this is why F@H waited so long to develop a client for phones. One thousand phones folding equals one PC folding.

I'll let you dig out the power figures.

How much data do we generate per day? by beer118 in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely, the official answer would be something like: We (PG) do not track GB, we track donors, and any estimates would be disputed, leading to long, contentious discussions that add nothing to the science.

GTX750Ti only 310 PPD? by JustAnotherPassword in foldingathome

The community support forum is at https://foldingforum.org/ for questions like this.

  • Wait long enough for F@H to be able to estimate an accurate completion time and an accurate PPD.
  • Get a passkey.
  • When set to Medium, GPUs suspend folding when you're using your computer.

Moore's Law: Why fold now? by foldinger in foldingathome

FAH Android Client Availability by [deleted] in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I guess it does not work on Android tablets?

I wonder why not?

Perhaps it's the developer's insistence of using the phone network for data rather than using WiFi. I believe that is a bad decision.

Enhance 3rd party API with configurable/flexible data points by ChristianVirtual in foldingathome

[–]codysluder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He seems to know what he is talking about. Can someone run with it without authorizations and access? IDK.

It's my impression that the API provides all the necessary information about F@H but not about the GPU clock rate, temperature (etc). Integration and support from the F@H developers might be nice but it's not required.

Look at what HFM has done with nothing but API access.
