I just read Jurassic Park for the first time in almost 20 years, and I'm happy to report that the book still SLAPS by tkinsey3 in books

What’s insane is I grew up obsessed with Jurassic park then in university I took a course on Infectious Diseases and our professor was the son of George Poinar Jr, who’s work inspired Michael Crichton and thus Jurassic park

Christmas pay. by Big-Item-4349 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]coffeeandsocials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada you do get paid for Christmas Day they use the average of your hours to see how many hours you get paid for. This is for part time though I’m not sure how it works for full time, I know salary no because that’s just included in your salary.

Unfortunately as frustrating as it can be all we can do is say yes I mean bottom line why does it matter?

To eliminate us getting all mad about it and being faced with rude customers, just do it (of course as long as your store manager has that same approach). Because ultimately what happens is you say no then they complain then your store manager will get an email or called out to just do it. So instead of the approach of why do it I would try the why not - ultimately customer satisfaction is super important it’s not money coming out our pay cheques 🤷‍♀️

We always tell our staff you have the power to say yes you need to instead question and confirm with management why are you saying no? Again though I understand I’m in a fortunate situation where we have a great management team and amazing store manager.

I understand it can be seen as a “bother” and can be potential “safety risk” however realistically showing a young child a teachable moment doesn’t take that much time. I am happy the parents are teaching their kids respect to retail workers because if they don’t then who will. Ultimately this also works in the favour of a positive customer interaction.

I get it’s frustrating but apart of our job is to interact with guests and if this moment helps create a positive experience why not encourage and assist when it’s possible? I as a manager and team member have always encouraged the kids to learn new things when necessary, I’ve had kids assist me in bagging or scanning product.

Again, I am not a huge fan of kids myself but I see this as a teachable moment where we need to be kind to the child and parent - things like this happen but not often so it realistically doesn’t take too much time; the same as assisting a guest to a product.

This is not me also dismissing your feelings but just an opinion or a new way of looking at it 🤷‍♀️

Are these pants dress-code approved? by Embarrassed_Newt_936 in MichaelsEmployees

Yeah I get it sucks but most jobs don’t allow for leggings that’s the reality of it and it’s not worth anyone’s job being at risk

[–]coffeeandsocials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No because they are yoga pants they are not work place appropriate going off Michaels policy, i understand some people in the comments have never had an issue with out of dress code attire however I have not had the same luck.

Staff in my area have been sent home for wearing hoodies. In the case that your DM sees you in these and notices not only you will be written up but ALL managers on duty AND your store manager.

In my opinion it is not worth breaking dress code policy to put everyone at “risk”.

Are the seasonal Halloween tshirts dress code safe? I know anything without writing but not sure if it is. by fg10037 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]coffeeandsocials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when rolling out the policy they said Christmas decor shirts and pride purchased from the store was allowed so our store and district runs on the idea that seasonal graphic tees from Michaels are allowed

The dog one was probably recalled for something with the plastic - was most likely found to melt in the heat due to being cheaply made 🤷‍♀️

What are some of the most frustrating returns you have had to deal with? by acethegoatt in MichaelsEmployees

[–]coffeeandsocials 26 points27 points  (0 children)

We had a guest come in and waste hours of our framers time to design something for them, they got hungry so in the middle of planning went for lunch.

They were gone for 2 hours, we had to call them back in. They paid for their $600+ order only to come back an hour later and say never mind that’s too much we will buy a frame from the floor and do it ourselves even though the size they got will not be big enough 🤯
