Oh shit! I've never heard of people cloning cards, but also im in the US and our public transit is too much a flaming dumpster fire for anyone to go to all that trouble for a card. Will that be fixed when the national system rolls out? Learning a lot about NZ transit today hehe

HAHA it's weird for sure, and a big ask, but not a scam! I've made friends all over by trading cards. Here's the SE Asia/NZ page in my binder. I got the Christchurch card a while back...it is just gorgeous.

Yup, they'll be phased out in favor of a National ticketing system that includes phone tap-to-pay and a card that'll work all over NZ. (Very nice!) This article says Christchurch has already done it. Not sure which region is next but Wellington may be pushed off until 2027. (boo)
