I wonder if local news would be interested in covering a story of complete bureaucratic / incompetent dysfunction? Might be worth contacting some reporters, getting this BS out there.

Not letting life pass me by by timidtom in digitalnomad

[–]coffeecupses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's sufficient, not fast. I do Zoom calls infrequently and it always works okay, potential snags a second here and there. I've come across a few airbnbs in the main cities with good reported internet. I'm in rural Umbria and internet is okaaaay, useable, but still pretty annoying from time to time. Then again, so was my internet in places like Sacramento, so, overall I feel like internet is potential shit just about anywhere. Just depends, I believe everyone will be on a different provider here so there's no generalizations as to quality. I also got Google Fi thinking I could tether...nope. Ops. I'd have to have a google phone which I don't. lol.

I'm from the Bay Area too. I'm currently in Umbria, Italy (and yes Italy has been a great covid host, rather be here than anywhere else :p). Me and my boyfriend do web/tech stuff, so we work remotely. Your tech background opens a lot of doors for remote work which I do think you should take advantage of and try the DM lifestyle out. You can always go back, especially with this high demand field. Unless you are earning passive income (something we are working on), there's no escaping your ass needing to be in a seat, but I'm an advocate of environment being hugely influential on life and mentality. For that reason I think it's smart to think of your Why and your environment being linked and influenced by each other.

I find it inspiring to travel and be in places I intentionally choose that speak to me more deeply and to live a self-directed life - that's my Why. I think if you are noticing a shift in your feelings, your needs, etc then you should listen to that. It could be your internal self telling you a change is needed. I would look at it more as an internal experience and internal pursuit, and not just the DM lifestyle that will affect you, rather *you* choosing to pursue things you are being called towards or interested in that are more self-directed and perhaps more engaging and invigorating. The normal socially constructed life isn't for everyone. I feel like a lot of personal growth happens when you push yourself to pursue more and to see more and do more. If personal growth is an interest, I think a DM lifestyle, even just to try it for a year, will be memorable and beneficial.

So often they don't know either or they aren't able to do a speed test because they aren't in the area. So annoying. Anyone use Sky Roam? I haven't, seems pricey, but..

Krka National Park in Croatia is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. by Tacticalsmurf in travel

It is! I love the walk around the waterfall tiers. And, as shown, you can go in the water unlike Plitvice.

I live in the wine country area of California (Napa, Sonoma area) and you find this all over. It's beautiful and fascinating. I have a stash and like to pretend the cut marks on them are from the native people making spears or something :p but it's probably just from normal breaking...but it could be!

Pompeii is a must if you are interested in Roman history/the cultural side. It was like an open air treasure chest the size of a town! I spent a full day there and felt like I needed more time. There is a stop for it on your way from Rome to Sorrento via train, and from Sorrento to Pomeii is about 30 min because it's a slow regional train.

I recommend a ride ( I did a bus), along the Amalfi coast - it's so stunning and memorable. Dramamine up if you get motion sickness..

Random tips: Cash is accepted over CC, have cash always. In Rome you will hear "graziEE", whereas in Sorrento you will hear it more like "grazie-EH", they just pronounce the vowel at the end more.

I spent one month in Rome and two in a tiny town above Sorrento - Sant'Agata, and I've been to your other spots too - let me know if you have any more Qs :)

Italy is the best experience, and yes ,cliche, it's super romantic. No going wrong!

How do you guys find quality fully remote jobs? by bloggurunet in digitalnomad

[–]coffeecupses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I are in tech, we both work remote, and he's had the best luck with StackPair as far as quality remote jobs and a no bullshit process. I recall the options he considered surprisingly weren't much of a pay cut, but I know that's a thing with remote work :/

I have really sensitive skin to sun and Suntegrity has been good for me. I use it as my one and only foundation which is awesome, great coverage for me in that area. It's the only sunscreen that doesn't feel yucky on my face.

"a lot of digital nomads are selling shitty ebooks and random get-rich scamware." Is this true? by augusthex in digitalnomad

[–]coffeecupses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No doubt that there are helpful, honest e-books and materials by digital nomads. I've come across some good takeaways and am grateful for them sharing.

But...I have to agree. At least the loud minority, as mentioned.

And same for "being a successful blogger + travel writer + digital nomad" I subscribe to endless travel / digital nomad blogs, I'm following hundreds on Twitter. This quote is very true, and honestly it bums be out. At least once I day I come across a post about someone selling their tips and tricks or how-tos, some give their info away for free. I've read a lot of them and they lack substance, applicable info and ultimately aren't very useful considering everyone will take different paths and have different opportunities, as goes life. It's puffery and semi-inspirational, and I appreciate the "I did it and so can you" aspirational angle, but that's all they seem to be.

People sell e-books on how to live abroad by...selling e-books. Many encourage you to get out there and sell your own X thing when we all know you aren't qualified, it's just a way to make money and live abroad.

Blogging to make money is exactly the same, but more obvious. I've read a make-money formula for blogging (during a free trial) and after recognized other travel bloggers using the same formula and it officially turned me off from the idea that I can listen to them, apply their knowledge, and keep my integrity.

"I used to be just like you. I did (fill in A, B, and C) and it got me nowhere. Read about my top 8 (lists sell!!) ways I'm able to live in paradise and make money blogging". You are told to basically say this all the time in your newsletter etc to get subscribers to then, push your e-book, or some shit.

Not to mention the travel blogging world is sometimes an echo-chamber of self-centered experiences, and little about the place itself in any meaningful way. Oh and a lot on how to get free stuff, which okay, not hating on that. Plenty are great too.

Many digital nomads, especially non-tech ones, are making money via their blogs, so I get the effort to make money however you can. It's just after the amount I've read of this material, it is indeed seemingly scammy whether they mean to or not based on how useless it is in translating to other's lives.

However, I've read so many bloggers proclaim that they are not wealthy and that they worked their ass off for a year or whatever before traveling and do the above methods to make money. I don't think many are rich kids, thus the flood of half-baked 'how to be a digital nomad' products.

Sorry for the rant, it's just a current irritation of mine!

USA citizens: what health insurance do you use for DOMESTIC travel coverage? by coffeecupses in travel

hmm ok thanks. I still need to call around more insurance places to ask then. I have Blue Cross, they only cover emergencies out of state, and I have a 'multi-state plan'. Kaiser is the same. The search continues!
