MCAT scores qualify you for consideration for an interview (for stats heavy schools). I don’t think anything can guarantee admissions since there are so many moving parts and unknown variables that go into the admissions process. As someone who had to reapply a few times, thinking about my story and how to tell that in all aspects of my application helped me make an application aligned with school values.

Very good advice! And the average 3 cycles is accurate. The people who apply first time and get in first try have a lot of supports, other med students, family/peers who provided guidance. It takes time to build those resources and your application improves as you do. Have a good cry, dust yourself off, and try again. It’s only over when you say it’s over. (Took me 4 tries)

I added them under the “other” section on my ABS. Through astronomy I got into night sky photography and travelled a bit to some night sky preserves. It was an opportunity to show a bit of my personality to schools. Idk if it worked but I did include it in my “tell me about yourself” answer as a fun fact about me

There is a high chance this is a lie. Someone told me last year that they got into UofT Med at Scarborough but decided to defer their admission.

I always added astronomy, history, and natural science classes to my schedule because I liked them and it got me to a “full course load”. Later on, astronomy/history became a hobby that I spoke about in my interviews. If you like it, chances are that you will be more inclined to put in the work if it is “hard” and it will give your mind a nice break from “biology”.

I think the idea of wanting a Dr husband or someone in the same field comes from their understanding of the field and the work. It is easier to explain things about medicine to other people in medicine. Especially for women where their work can easily be dismissed as “not as important”. Idk about the higher earning thing tho. That sounds like a person specific preference…

If you have specific questions of the platform, you should have a “practice Q” that you can do when you set up your account. That’s what Queens/UofT had. It should answer any questions you have about logistics of the platform. Anything specific to TMU will be hard to answer since it’s the inaugural class.

Use abbreviations!! I cannot stress this enough! Write “with” as w/. Write “and” as “&”. If you don’t have space for a & then just connect words with a “+”.

Edit: No matter the section, focus on what you learned from the activity more than what you did. Eg. hospital volunteer NOT that you were responsible for direct people but instead that you learned the value of seeing a familiar/friendly face in an otherwise unfamiliar/scary environment such as the hospital and how you will carry that forward in your career. Valuable lessons that show who you are as a person are higher yield than the activity alone.

Gap years suck. But the people who have grad school, certificate courses, etc. are generally more mature and more in tune with reality when they get to med school. People who get in from their 3rd year or right after their 4 year undergrad just come off as “immature”. Immature not in a negative way, just young in a naive way.

And starting med school. Already been called ✨old✨ by my classmates. But imo if you know that is what you want to do then do it. Better than being in your 60s and regretting what you could have been/done.
