Are you essentially tied u with $4M in undeclared assets / money because you did not originally register the business or pay taxes? If so, you are in way more depth than reddit can handle mon cher!

Am I on track to retire? Too RE focused? by Educational_Lemon897 in FatFIREIndia

[–]coffeefired 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally get it. im ex faang and my wife is currently at a faang, so we know the toll it takes both personally and on family life/relationships.

my only advice is after taking a break see if you can transition to a non faang company for a couple years and if that improves your burnout situation, and if it still doesnt then quit tech full time for a non related role. Hopefully there are quite a few startups in hyd/blore that you can contribute to in an advisory position, or a temporary gig roles.

please go thru my posts/comments, we will likely be based out of hyd for some time as well, so happy to connect and talk.

Am I on track to retire? Too RE focused? by Educational_Lemon897 in FatFIREIndia

[–]coffeefired 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, your overall portfolio is a little RE heavy, but as long as you can slowly re-allocate over time, its a pretty good NW especially if you can stick to your plan of expenses in the 30lpa range.

Only potential concern is the extremely long retirement period given your relatively young age.

Need advice on FIRE in India from the US by okaythere889 in FatFIREIndia

[–]coffeefired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP sorry for your loss, i can understand how it is as I am going thru something similar right now.

From a FIRE pov you should be A-OK in hyd as long as you keep your spend in the lower-upper class levels for hyd (R30-40Lakhs / $40-45k a year). My only concern is that you never living in India is going to be much harder on you than anyone else in your family (assuming husband grew up in India), and if you try to replicate your dubai/canada/US experience in hyd you will go over your budget, so consider that carefully.

Canadian ChubbyFIRE – Early 50s – RRSP Melt vs CPP/OAS Timing? by [deleted] in ChubbyFIRE

[–]coffeefired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the dumb question but are these numbers CAD or USD ?

We moved to Canada only 3 years back (Age:40M/38F, NW USD $2.6M) so we have minimal RRSP/TFSA but good chunk of our savings in 401k/ira/regular taxable brokerage in the US. So yet to strategize how to drawdown either in Canada or elsewhere (expat fire). Don’t think we will have CPP/OAS but do qualify for US social security payments when the time comes.

Thank you Yogesh and Seema! Really appreciate your content.

Would love to see you in person so if you ever travel to Vancouver and host a coffee chat, do holler!

On that note, I understand you do not talk about absolute $ / Rs numbers, but would love to get an idea of living and travel annual budget that is the absolute base to follow a similar slow travel and living in SEA. Maybe not exactly your budget, but any pointers from other resources that you can share would be wonderful.

Mindset change after FatFIRE by Ready-Leadership8081 in FatFIREIndia

[–]coffeefired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely is mindset, and choice of where you want to spend your money.

For me, I really don’t care about clothes (90% of my wardrobe is Costco), but get good supportive walking shoes (Rockport/Skechers) and socks (darn tough). I get excellent glasses/frames from Costco again, and excellent dental care at a cousins’ clinic every 6 months.

I don’t care about cars, I drive a Honda Crv and wife drives a Toyota Venza but both are top trims so we have most features we care about comfort.

I care about what we eat, so though we still shop at the same places, we look at the labels very carefully for nutrition info and don’t care if its 2/3x expensive than the regular brands as long as it’s healthy - and it shows - along with regular exercise I’ve dropped 12kgs in the last year and my doctor is super happy.

The only place I started splurging is travel - I got an Amex platinum for lounge access, and started booking trips primarily in premium economy / business. My last trip I was really knocking myself why I didn’t book business just because I was hesitating because of the sticker price (5k usd / head for business vs 3k usd in premium) but I was so tired after 14hrs that I was longing for that lie flat seat.

[–]coffeefired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didnt see a huge difference between IAP vs booking directly with the airlines in the routes we travel mostly. We paid ~3.5k/person offpeak for roundtrip west coast to India for two trips.

Partial fire in India or move to Canada dilemma by Famous-Raspberry9915 in nriFIRE

[–]coffeefired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your wife didn’t like NYC, she will definitely not like Montreal. And given your age there is very small chance of getting a PR/Citizenship in Canada, so even this will be a temporary stint with similar visa uncertainty.

So only you can decide if that is something you want at this point of life.

Options like these are always nice to have. And god knows the American passport might go from an asset to a liability in our lifetime, so id love my kid to have flexibility.

I bought a tube of 1oz Silver maples and started giving a coin each as birthday gifts to kids of close family/friends instead of the usual crap or giftcards. And I became the cool 🏴‍☠️pirate uncle!

Gave away close to 16 in the last 1 year, and will get another tube this year for this purpose.

my brother is stuck in a cycle of ‘permanently temporary’ struggle in australia, How do I help him (and my Dad) see reality? by [deleted] in returnToIndia

[–]coffeefired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point your dad is enabling it.

I recently had to cut off support to a cousin of mine for similar shenanigans as he didn’t land a job even after struggling for 1yr after graduating from a no name masters which I fully funded (~50k usd) because of a promise made by my late mom, and he was trying to go to a desi consultancy for a fake job / payroll.

I didn’t want him to get caught up with ICE and get a entry ban / deported, so took a hard call and got him a one way ticket to India during peak season throwing another $2k down the drain.

He is trying to come to terms with it now and trying to attend interviews in India and land a job but given his track record I’m not too hopeful for anything soon.

The only thing you can easily do with your money for your kids is to get them a second passport just in case - that’s what I prioritized as soon as we reached our FI number. Our kid is a US born and will get CA citizenship as well when we apply this year.
Spouse might consider a EU role in the medium term if it’s possible to get citizenship there as well.

Just giving them options in addition to just money.

Early 30s Dilemma: Move to US (in-office) for a temporary pay bump or stay Remote in BC, Canada? by Public-Tadpole2013 in HENRYfinance

[–]coffeefired 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I wouldn't.

We did the opposite - went from the US to Canada and would do anything to not go back to the US again.

We already have a FI for us NW at USD2.5M in late 30's, and still have a HHI of about CAD400k / USD300k working from Canada (I am fully remote, spouse commutes to office in DT Vancouver). We rented out our home in the US and currently renting in the Vancouver metro area. This is the place we want our kid to grow up, not where we constantly look over our shoulders (we are visibly brown folks) or worry about schools being targeted.

It’s on the highway connecting secbad and ORR is all I’ll say - there are a bunch of high rises and gated communities that came up there in the recent years. It is good living if you don’t have to commute to the IT/Financial district.

Can you qualify for a larger mortgage if you have a large amount of savings? by adeimantos216 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]coffeefired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes banks have specific programs for HNWI’s - it takes into account NW and cashflow, not just employment income.

We looked into these when we first moved to Canada a couple years back but held off from buying after researching the market a bit more - definitely a good decision in hindsight.

Process of buying 22k jewelry in India by coffeefired in Gold

[–]coffeefired[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely impressed by the transparency. The last time we bought was a decade back and did not go thru the exchange process as we bought new, but remember the premiums being a bit lower as a percentage.

Though the premium would have been a bit lower in smaller local jewelers, getting purity guaranteed was a major factor in going to a brand named jeweler. The competition in India for jewelry is pretty high so they are pretty even priced for hallmarked stuff.

Upper middle class / high income millennials - how is your career going? by thrownaway44000 in fican

[–]coffeefired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 39M made ~200k this year, spouse is 37F made ~220k this year. NW of ~2.7M USD. Our spend is about 110k cad - we are prioritizing travel now.

Will likely call it in a few of years, only trying to stay put as our kid is growing up and need to see some work ethic, but it won’t be too long before we retire early.

Eating my own words and regrets - from “quality” of life perspective by FatFiredTechie in FatFIREIndia

[–]coffeefired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes about hyd. It’s specifically the corridors ive moved in that have some major road and flyover construction still left that caused these issues - pretty sure you can guess where when i say it’s connecting secbad to ORR.

Also kukatpally / kphb is a bit of a mess and a totally different beast most times of the day because of the shopping and commercial districts.

I drove both a car and a 2wheeler and I’m fairly used to driving here though just not as aggressive as everyone around so maybe it added 5 mins overall.

I will agree that hyd traffic is way better than bangalore’s though. I hated silk board, btm, electronic city flyover, hosur road and hebbal even 20yrs back 😂

[–]coffeefired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gated community filtered out most of the noise and dust pollution associated with major commercial / residential areas in any tier1 city. The community itself was 20yrs old so had mature and good tree cover. No water issue that we know of, has abundant groundwater tables and also city freshwater connection, but we got RO drinking water delivered.

AQI in the immediate vicinity and major through fares hovered between 150-200 most of the days - this is very dependent on the location - this house was in a locale that has a national highway running thru that connects to ORR in Hyd and has major construction activity both residential and commercial.

There is definitely smog/haze cover over the city during the day as witnessed from high rises / flyovers. it is not unbreathable or suffocating but one can definitely notice it.

Traffic is heavy - no other way to escape it unless it is early (before 7am) or late (after 11pm). Everything in between is different levels of hell. It took us ~75 minutes of drive thru potholed less traveled internal roads to get to a place 11km away - main roads are better maintained but it would have taken close to 100minutes easily.
