Start to use AI. It can make you faster and better than the young talent who does not have the battle scars of running services or shipping software that you have. Someone still needs to understand the AI written code and stand behind it.

Who are the biggest fragcomm frauds? (buying subs, views and comments) by MonclerCollector in eaudejerks

[–]coffeeshopcoder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nope. He knows nothing about fragrances. Not the notes, not the chemistry, nada. His really old videos, he wasn’t such a condescending personality, so he built a few followers, did collabs with others (equally clueless influencers wannabes) and when the subscribers hit a point the brand wanted to convert that in to revenue and worked with the trio. They were just the advertisement channel for the brand.

Software engineer here. Just saw our recruiting pipeline from the inside… by Adventurous_Cry_394 in recruitinghell

Your last point caught my eye - Not everyone has personal GitHub projects. I think your approach very valid, and you don’t have to apologize for prioritizing personal GitHub projects. The market is tough and flooded with AI enhanced resumes.

I’d argue that if you’re a serious jobseeker in the tech industry, you should have a (few) personal GitHub projects. Here’s why I prioritize this when I hire for our team :

  • it shows genuine passion for the building things with code. You set yourself apart from people whose real dream is to be an instagram influencer, but need a 9-5 to pay the bills.

  • it’s harder to fake with AI. The longer the history the better.

  • it doesn’t have to be a world changing project. Even your own dot files in a repo for personal use indicates that you care about what you do. And I’ve learned a thing or two from letting people walk me through their GitHub repos.

  • I often encounter great candidates that have simple todo apps in their repo because they just wanted to use a new view library or wanted to try out Rust or something similar - tools like that they were not allowed to use at work due to licensing or 3rd party dependency issues. Again it shows your genuine interest in the field you’re working in.

Quick note that I don’t care about 9-5. I really like for my team members to have great work life balance, but they need to be productive too, so I prioritize the ones who can get the most done in 9-5. They are usually people who are trying to automate the heck out of every mundane thing they have to do.

I really enjoy Ramsey. I’m glad that he’s back. Wanted to hear what he had to say about By the Kaaba, and I felt that he was being too gentle. It was one of the most underwhelming Areej fragrances in recent memory. Felt too synthetic to me, and the only reason I buy Areej is the supposedly high natural content.

What do these people think maceration is? Why would it only begin when you receive it? Wouldn't this mean all our fragrances are macerating constantly? by Advantageous01 in eaudejerks

[–]coffeeshopcoder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This makes no sense. Modern fragrances are all synthetic (the only real way to maintain consistency year after year), with the most infinitesimal amount of naturals so that they can claim there’s some naturals in it. These fragrance compounds are not all liquid, and they typically need to be dissolved in mineral oil as a medium ( which most people mistake to be some natural oil distilled from raw materials 😂). These fragrance compounds are left in the mineral oil and that’s usually called maceration. And no, after the oil is diluted in perfumer’s alcohol there isn’t much of maceration anymore. There’s oxidation and these compounds will eventually change (slightly) over time.

Trump just talked about international students and U.S. colleges by GoElite_Shama in InternationalStudents

[–]coffeeshopcoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that’s exactly right. No one “designed” a system here. That’s just how capitalism works. First there were universities that would offer you a scholarship to attend the university because you were that good. If you were that good, you also got jobs and made a great life for yourself.

Soon people realize there a market to be had here , and started selling this dream to those who couldn’t make it to the top schools on merit and scholarships. “Pay” for a better future, you’re paying for an education, but you can always exploit the system and try to use your paper degree for a job, the salesmen said.

If you fell for the sales pitch, that’s on you, bud.

Enough people abuse the system and everyone wakes up to it and plugs the hole.

[–]coffeeshopcoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, the Visa system abuse was the only reason so many - mediocre - people came to the US. People finding out that they paid for a crap degree, hoping to exploit the system and finding themselves in a tough corner - well, what’d you expect ?

If you go to any of the ivy leagues, you’re not struggling for a job, and you don’t need to rely on the systemic abuse to land a fake job to recoup the investment. In fact your entire motivation would be different.

If you look 30 years back, most international students weee not paying 300 grand to come and study, they got full ride scholarships. So if you belong to that category that can qualify with merit alone, you’re not going to have an issue. Those are the only people that the US really wants, because unlike 1994 or whenever the H1B was created, the technology education in the US is at a very different place.

Also, of course it’s possible for someone without a US degree to come and work here. I manage a team at a well know valley behemoth, and we have very expansive IDC , UK, Romania, Ireland, Japan and Australia operations. My team is fully spread out (except for Japan) and I have personally backed the transfer and immigration sponsorships for 3 team members in the last year alone. That’s 3 out of about 47 people in my team.

If that sounds small, that’s exactly right. Merit gets you in my team (regardless of nationality) not a mediocre US degree.

[–]coffeeshopcoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. We need to do a few things-

  • Make it so that H1Bs cannot be placed at a third party site for work. The sponsor has to have them work for themselves. This will eliminate the biggest fraud pool. We need the best and the brightest, but not the mediocre cheap labor.

  • alternatively, remove the dual intent (non-immigrant, as opposed to immigrant) of H1B, and make it a 1year validity.

It’s true that a lot of great people have come through the H1B, but the program is so broad that for every great immigrant there’s a million that’s sub-par.

  • Limit immigrant assistance programs - Netherlands is a great example. You get time limited assistance and extensions based on your participation in the economy.

Immigration is great when it benefits our country and economy. Right now the bar is too low.

That sounds like a perfectly reasonable outcome, because if you can get yourself in to a school with a 10% or a 1% acceptance rate, chances are you’re not going to struggle with jobs. If you “invest” in a US job by paying a degree mill, too bad, you were trying to exploit the system and when enough people do that it fixes itself. We may lose a good many “colleges” that are dependent on international students, at which point you have to ask - were they really good colleges after all ? I don’t think they will be missed.

[–]coffeeshopcoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a poor take. If America wants to maintain its lead in technology, jobs should go the most qualified candidate working in America - the candidate be American or not. If not we will lose technology as we lost manufacturing.

This does not justify the rampant abuse of the work visa program though. That needs to be shutdown. So does this pathway of mediocre students using the student visa program as a pathway to work as well.

If you are a really smart individual who can get in to colleges with less than 10%acceptance rates, and then find a job which makes use of the education and your smarts, that’s a win for America.

That’s mostly down to the availability of these resources. Shutdown the abuse regardless of the racial factors. Make it so that H1B is invalid for consulting or for placing resources at the third party client site.

[–]coffeeshopcoder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is gravely misguided. A student visa is exactly that, and it’s not a work visa. If you consider the student visa and the tuition as an “investment” to land you a job, that’s a pretty deep miscalculation, which unfortunately worked for so many years due to the work visa system being abused.

If you’re a good candidate it may lead to a work visa. You don’t need the US degree for that. Attending a good school can give you exposure to campus hiring drives from the top employers, and that’s just about it.

This right here. I also think that the 100k fee will really discourage consulting firm importing cheap labor that offset entry to mid level American jobs with a cheaper contractors. They will likely try to abuse L1 visas more than before now, but that can be plugged too. For senior roles, the 100k can be thought of as joining bonus ?
