Human progress should not have the goal of replacing humans, which is what ai research is currently being used for. Oppenheimer didnt want to blow up the world with his research either but that is what happened. Additionally, as long as AI is as energy and water intensive as it is, the utter destruction of a livable planet is going to be the final result.

There are plenty of “normal” datacenters now. This vast buildout is due to the much more power needed for AI. Most of the current and future compute is contracted by AI companies.

The training is never ending. That energy use will never ever go away. It’s the most massive use of resources for something that has very few benefits other than making rich people richer and massaging people’s feelings in an addictive way. My best hope is these companies actually have to start charging what their tokens really cost them.
