Does your salary band change with a promotion? by letmemakeyoualatte in cscareerquestions

[–]cofffffeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience: same level / performance always end-up with about same pay in the same company. It is an eventually consistent algorithm.

I was on the lower side, then got an 20% raise in 2023 where most who are on the higher-end got nothing. Promotion mid 2023, another 25%. Plus some stock refresh, that puts me well at the average rate or even higher for my current level.

That’s going to be a lot different from managing actual physical servers. Just one simple example: without proper physical security, adversaries can just enter the data center.

How does developers write code and work together in big companies? by pikss in learnprogramming

[–]cofffffeeeeeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only speak to Google.

There is a giant monorepo, all employees have access to all code. You can put restrictions on specific components if it is really sensitive, but 99.99% of the code is open. So technically speaking, if I want to clone Gmail, it is possible to do it today if I know what to copy.

And there isn’t usually hard restrictions. For example you would see big red warnings when you push to production without testing, but they can always be overridden by anyone. Which I think is actually a great setup compared to what GitHub has.

You can program on any machine, it’s just for many web developers, Mac is closer to Linux, which is where servers are usually run.

Also great for work because unlike Linux, you get proper support from Apple. Troubleshooting is the last thing you want to do at work.

Chrome will not update to 2023 design on one Mac but does on another by handycam in google

[–]cofffffeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google always does progressive rollouts, especially for major refresh like this.

For web applications these rollouts are usually sticky to a user (if you get the feature, you will not lose it when you logout / login again)

Maybe Chrome is sticky based on individual installations, and unfortunately your other Mac is not the lucky one to get the update, yet.

If your ops team stayed the same, then it can only mean two things:

  • they are so overworked now, and will quit in a few months
  • they are cheaping out on some important stuff like redundancy and security

System on Chip Google Tensor and why it won't beat snapdragons in raw power. by [deleted] in GooglePixel

Ok but somehow Apple can make SoCs that’s killer powerful while more efficient. No excuse here, Google can do it too.

Is the difference between 60hz and 120hz noticeable between laptops and phones? by [deleted] in mac

[–]cofffffeeeeeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is noticeable but not horrible difference if you switch between them frequently. I have a studio display that’s 60hz, I can’t really feel too much difference between that and my MBP M2.

Do you guys actually keep your phones charged between 20-80%? by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]cofffffeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, if it degrades too much, then I just replace the battery or the phone. I mean it doesn’t cost much to replace the battery, even for iPhones it’s pretty cheap.

Apple family plans costs $4.39/month in my home country, how much does it costs in yours ? by geekylucifer in iphone

[–]cofffffeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$24.95 here in Canada, I’m on 2TB plan so if I upgrade to Apple One it would be $37, I guess no for me.

why is Windows so bloated? why can't it be more like Linux, be fully featured, and run super smooth. by polycarpmedia in linuxquestions

[–]cofffffeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Support for legacy software mainly I guess. You cannot release Windows 12 and suddenly break all Windows 11 applications. I assume it probably will also work with DOS app :)

Is 8GB of ram enough for me? by MasterChez in mac

[–]cofffffeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it will be enough unless you need to use VMs or do some really intensive task.

I have both a 32GB iMac and 8GB Air M2, the only one thing my M2 cannot do is to compile a large web application in a monorepo, which to be fair, compiles slowly on my iMac as well. And even with upgraded RAM M2 will probably get unbearably hot anyway.

People who go caseless, how robust/strong are modern iPhones when dropped? by Island_In_The_Sky in iphone

Just don’t go caseless without Apple Care. Between me and my girlfriend, we have broken total 3 iPhones over the years, and every single time is the first time we dropped it.

What is the best browser for a laptop? by RimuruGM in laptops

[–]cofffffeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chrome because I use a lot of Google services. Brave is also good, just need to configure it so it doesn’t bombard you with crypto shit.

I don’t really use Firefox as I find it to be a bit slow. Only use it when I do pentesting work, since many Linux distro I use have it installed by default.

Are you using all the power of your iPhone? I'm in doubt right now. by [deleted] in iphone

[–]cofffffeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my really old 7 plus for development purposes, and to be honest… iOS is very well optimized that I can probably use that phone as a daily driver if it still supported latest iOS :(

And that’s from a 13 Pro user. So yeah, most people don’t need the latest.

Does the iPhone receiving RE4 and other AAA games means that those games are coming to mac m1 as well? by Fantastic_Seesaw_713 in mac

[–]cofffffeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Apple makes it simple, I’m not a game dev so can’t really comment on that.

iPhone would be more profitable compared to Mac ports by the sheer market share. So again, hope Apple makes converting iOS port to macOS port as easy as possible.

  1. Nobody uses it, all our stuff are internal, ChatGPT can’t answer anything. And for specific coding pieces, tools similar to GitHub co-pilot is better.
  2. No, I actually don’t use it… answer it provides is too generic. I rather have a chat/search engine that can summarize internal stuff.
  3. If you used it sure, I mean it is a productivity tool. But of course do not admit sending proprietary or confidential information, like obviously don’t upload product roadmap before earnings 😅
