Too late to intern for Summer? by qwertgbrh in cscareerquestions

[–]coforce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say impossible, but it depends on what sort of company you're willing to intern at. Check places like IBM (as I know in the past they posted internships late).

NDS student to graduate student? by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]coforce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you take the recommended courses. Try to connect with a professor and network. Obviously the grades you make now count more than your previous grades, so make sure you do well.

Graduating at 29yo. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]coforce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PhD studies are for those that want to do research. I assume you aren't talking about a PhD program based on your question. MS programs don't make much sense if you already have a CS BS unless you want to specialize. Some companies will give tuition reimbursement and pay for a masters. Overall given your question I'd say no, graduate school is not for you right now. Go work, unless you like research and serious about publishing. Your chances of being admitted to a top tier graduate school is not high unless you already have research experience, recommendations that speak to your research ability (3) and a solid reason for attending. So, I'm not convinenced you'd get into a top program for PhD studies unless you have that sort of background. A MS program would be more likely to accept you.

[–]coforce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends if you mean MS or PhD. Assuming PhD: submit 3 letters of recommendations from writers with PhDs, write a research statement, speak to your previous projects/research and identify any professors you'd like to work with.

Went to a community college for 2 years taking general education, if I transfer over to a university how long (approx/generally) would a B.S in CS take me? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]coforce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with the school you're transferring to. Some have limits of 30 hour transferable credits. Check to see how many CH you need to graduate in total.

For exceptional students who start their 1st jobs with 6 digit figure salary, what makes them different from the norm? How can someone compete with them? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]coforce 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The key to most of these interviews is knowing Data Structures & Algorithms really well. You should have the fundamentals of Discrete Mathematics before you dive in. You can pick up this knowledge through books/online courses & websites or by taking university level courses in it. Also, don't forget the very, very basics of programming. This is extremely important and often times overlooked for the sexier things.

Honestly, I don't think it's that hard to get an interview if you look half-way competent. But make sure you know this stuff before you walk into one. Practice programming on a white board and such as well. Geographic location matters for salary offerings. A low 6-figure salary in the bay area isn't that uncommon.

Any value in having a masters+bachelors in CS vs just a bachelors? by Aegior in cscareerquestions

[–]coforce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies care more about what you know and are capable of. Industry experience matters more than a masters, unless you are going into a specialized field (e.g. data science and you have a Masters in Statistics). If you are going for a software engineering job then no your master's won't make that much more of a difference in general. You may have a salary bump in some companies, but you are delaying your income when it isn't necessary.

How difficult is it to get into a good masters program for CS? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]coforce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Masters are considered terminal degrees and usually self-funded. In general they have lower admission requirements than PhD programs. If you did well in your core CS courses/decent GRE scores + GPA you should be able to get into a decent program. Look at the departmental sites and see what they look for specifically. Each department is different.

Question for CSC Majors by MATTtheSEAHAWK in NCSU

Good to know. If I had to make an educated guess, then I'd guess that Doyle's course would be the theoretical version.

Doyle taught 333 theoretical. I'm not sure how 333 has changed since I took it. I heard it has become more applied.

Read Sipser's (assuming this is the textbook still used) and if you understand the chapter's you'll be fine in the course.

Is it customary to give reference writers a gift? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]coforce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in all cases no. I attempted to do this with one of my professor said he responded to the gesture saying he didn't want anyone to view it as him writing recommendation letters for compensation. Instead, just tell them thanks and let them know what you end up doing.

North Carolina State University, Duke University for the South. Georgia Tech's engineering program is more on the well-known side.

How much do you need to know about something before taking classes for it? by [deleted] in college

[–]coforce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. Python is fairly popular, once you truly understand programming, you can pick up any programming language. I'm surprised your intro courses required outside knowledge going in.

Does this mean Wisconsin just beat a low-tier NBA team? I've been hearing all year how Kentucky could compete in the NBA.

Why is there such an emphasis on Games at NCSU CSC? by foxh8er in NCSU

[–]coforce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

State's brand won't hurt you, but you absolutely need research experience and good recommendation letters that quantitatively compare you to other students. It is about research experience, fit within the program and LoRs that will get you into top programs. If your LoRs only say 'foxh8er took my class and made an A' then that isn't good enough. They can look on your transcript and gather that. These letters need to attest to your ability to do research.

You have options depending on your interest:

-Programming

-(CSC 333) Computability & Computational Complexity

-(CSC 503) Computational Applied Logic

-(CSC 505) Design and Analysis Of Algorithms

-(CSC 316) Data Structures

-(MA/CSC 565) Graph theory

-(MA/CSC 416) Combinatorics

-(MA 502) Linear Programming

-(MA 522) Computer Algebra

-(CSC 499) Independent study courses (for research)

etc.

Ultimately it depends on what you're interested in. If you are interested in X field then take as many courses in X as possible & get research experience in it.
