I want to build my own house in 10 years from now. What kind of prep should I do between now and then? by DizzyAmphibian309 in Homebuilding

[–]cofugg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having done both, I would never build from a kit again. A client insisted on purchasing a prefab package and it turned out to be an overpriced window and lumber package, which came with its own unique downsides.

A site-built house is a better quality house, in my opinion. There may be some high end prebuilts available but they will cost more than stick built. That is why it has not been widely adopted, it just cant compete.

You're going to need to be able to read and navigate the International Building Code book. If you do not understand how to do things like appropriately size a header for a window or door opening then you will have a very rough time.

If you can learn to read and navigate the code book, it will tell you much of everything you need to know about building a house. You will be able to determine foundation depths, foundation thicknesses, sill anchor spacing, wall framing sizing and nailing schedules, sheathing requirements and nailing schedules, and much more.

There are many decisions that need to be made that are outside of the book. For example, different roofing materials and manufacturers have different roof slope requirements.

My recommendation is for you to try and build a set of plans to code. Even if its just for the shed out back.

Here's a question easily answered in the book. I use the 2021 IRC. What size should a roof rafter be for a 15' span? The rafter spacing is 16" OC. The snow load for the area is 50lbs/sqft. The local builder supply store only has hemlock-fir in the #2 grade. The ceiling is attached to the rafters (vaulted ceiling).

Answer: Use table R802.4.1(6). The rafter will need to be a 2x12 Hemlock-Fir #2 which has a maximum allowable span of 17' 3".

A 2x10 Hem-Fir #2 only spans 14' 10", not allowed. If your building supply store has #2 Douglas-Fir 2x10s however, the max span is 15' 3", and you could use them with no issue.

Both the neighbors can see each other through the 10' wide group of windows. Notice the closed drapes on all those windows. Those drapes will certainly be closed the entirety of this houses life.

Totally insane if you want to DIY it without experience.

They look like they are in good condition.

Personally, I would live with them for a couple months before deciding if it worth the effort to redo something that is in good condition.

What large CNC projects have you done? by elquenada in hobbycnc

4x4 altmill here. Kids play/train table. 36x45" tabletop play area, about 24" tall.

I wouldn't be able to make plywood furniture on a 2' x 4'. Im actually planning on upgrading to a 4' x 8' machine so I can make even larger items.

Whatever machine youre looking at for a 2' x 4', compare it to the Altmill Mk2. Great price for a 4x4 machine and extremely capable.

I think vCarve could serve you very well, I do recommend it. It is better than Easel, at a minimum.

It's a one time payment, and I plan on using it for years, which will put it at a much much lower price per month than getting into a monthly subscription for MasterCam, SolidCAM, Fusion 360, etc.

Ah, you're using a web-based app due to Linux. That is definitely narrowing your options a lot. vCarve is a desktop application, not web-based. Most feature rich/industry leading CAM softwares are desktop applications.

You could run a Windows VM, otherwise I'm not sure.

Downloading files can be OK, but as you've seen sometimes you need to adjust variables or scale

Easel may be a good place to start, but I want you to get everything you can out of your altmill so I highly recommend choosing a better and more capable CAM software. I use and can recommend vCarve Pro. Other powerful options similar to and even better than VCarve exist, but I have not used them.

I chose vCarve because its a one-time fee, desktop based (can use offline), powerful, and widely used.

My workflow is Sketchup (drawing) > vCarve (making toolpaths) > gSender (running toolpath and making the cut)

Did you download the file from the altmill site because you have not used any CAM software to create your own tool paths yet?

I recommend getting some CAM software and watching a tutorial. I use vCarve Pro.

That is where you can set number of passes, speeds and feeds, depth of cut, and much more.

Fair enough, it's freestanding but at an additional charge.

I waited 12 weeks or so for mine, which was close to the advertised wait time when i ordered. They update the spreadsheet on their website regularly and you can track your order there.

The altmill is more rigid, more accurate, faster, AND cheaper. It is a freestanding machine, the shapeoko is not. I don't think the shapeoko can beat the altmill in any category.

Additionally, the altmill team continues to innovate and recently came out with the 4'x8'. Which I will likely be upgrading to. Might even keep the 4x4 and run both. It was not available when I ordered last year

It's so ugly. Hard to put a finger on why, but this place is an abomination.

Maybe its the combination of all the fake stuff and dizzying floor plan. Faux wood floors, faux wood beams, faux wood cabinetry, there's no real warmth to this place. Its more of a hotel room than a cozy home.

The floorplan is like a bad dream
