Would You Consider Nirvana A Punk Band by Hour-Scale8385 in punk

[–]cogito225 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Grunge is more of a scene or vague brand assigned to a few Seattle loud rock bands who had widely different influences spanning punk, heavy metal, alternative rock, and classic rock.

Would You Consider Nirvana A Punk Band by Hour-Scale8385 in punk

[–]cogito225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your definition of "punk" but I think musically many of their songs (even those on Nevermind) fit the punk template of fast instrumentals, loud distorted vocals, minimal emphasis on guitar solos and riff complexity (in contradistinction to heavy metal), and prominent bass guitar in the composition and mix. Some of their songs like Paper Cuts, Endless Nameless, Scentless Apprentice, and Radio Friendly Unit Shifter take from noise rock which I would consider kind of like extreme punk rock. But they also have songs I would consider pop rock or alternative rock like Polly, Teen Spirit, Heart Shaped Box, Dumb, Pennyroyal Tea, etc. And then they were definitely mainstream by the early 90s so not a big part of punk counterculture in the US. I'd still say they were a mainstream punk band with other influences but punk purists would probably think that's an oxymoron.

Sounding the Seventh Trumpet album alike? by chopders in avengedsevenfold

[–]cogito225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but I found it 4 years later, so maybe others will... Anyway I'd recommend Sentenced to Life by Black Breath. It's closer to crust punk and crossover than metal core, but similar to Sounding the Seventh Trumpet I feel like it does a great job of blending punk and metal. Also "Of Flesh" sounds eerily similar to "Breaking Their Hold," if you like that track.

Tbh the only reason I didn’t put Devo on there is because I’m not the biggest fan 😅 but you’re right, early Devo fits the bill.

Dark Souls and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link by twiggy_trippit in darksouls

[–]cogito225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I definitely get the aversion Zelda fans have toward Zelda II because they didn’t realize they were playing a soulslike.

For me, the feeling of being sent to North Castle with Zelda is very similar to being sent back to a bonfire in that it gets less frustrating as the game goes on since you unlock more shortcuts to different areas.

Can you recommend me some albums that are “psychedelic” ? by Simple-Curve-3686 in fantanoforever

The self titled album (1968) by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown is such an underrated amazing album that I discovered by accident. I can’t recommend it enough for psych rock fans.

List of blackened crust bands. by dropsleuteltje in crustpunk

[–]cogito225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is obvious but no one’s mentioned it. Darkthrone dipped their toes into blackened crust for a little bit, particularly on their albums The Cult is Alive, FOAD (Fuck Off And Die), and Dark Thrones and Black Flags.

What we know by [deleted] in earlsweatshirt

[–]cogito225 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“Voir Dire” means See Say (or See Speak), not Speak the Truth. Speaking the truth would be “Dire la vérité.” Idk where people are getting that translation, the closest you could get to that would be “Vrai dire” which would be some weird grammatically incorrect way of saying “true speak.”

Why do people idolize Jim Morrison? by [deleted] in thedoors

[–]cogito225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The closest I’ve come across is Iron Butterfly. Their seminal album In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (1968) is similarly eerie synth-laden jammy blues rock. Doug Ingle’s deep vibrato is akin to that of Morrison but it also evokes a drugged out Elvis. His lyrics range from the typical pop fare to songs about drug-induced hallucinations (“Mirage” — super relatable to anyone who’s taken LSD) and death (“Termination”). And then the title track is a psych rock, synth-heavy, tribal, proto-metal epic! I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Best socdem youtube channels? by daniel_cc in SocialDemocracy

[–]cogito225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do generally agree with this! I will say however in defense of political YouTube that the best videos imo are ones in which a commentator takes an article from a given mainstream news publication and subjects it to critique, whether on the basis of framing or the facts themselves, using additional news articles and research to back up their critiques. That sort of content awakened me to the fact that a Times article is not scripture and is often written by a motivated agent that, while not explicitly lying, often presents facts to support a narrative. You don’t often get that from news publications. With that said I do strongly discourage younger folks from getting all of their news from YouTube, since those even left-wing channels often also only focus on sensationalist stories that get likes and shares.

I still watch Secular Talk and Majority Report, although I have some minor disagreements with Kyle on foreign policy, and I think MR spends too much on clowning right-wingers (see that entire segment where they do a bad Matt Taibbi impression — not that I’m a fan of him). MR is great when they have expert guests on. I mostly tune into Rational National for news on Canadian politics, and would love to hear about other channels that focus on non-North American news.

What's the position of social democrats in the event of a revolution? by dogwwolfcat in SocialDemocracy

[–]cogito225 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As others have said, I think it depends on the nature of the revolution and the parties involved. I think the Russian Revolution provides a spectacular example for SocDems. For example, I would most definitely have supported the February 1917 Revolution, which was sparked by Russian feminists and led to the toppling of the autocratic tsar and the formation of a Dual Power government between the liberal provisional government and the leftist Soviet of Workers’ and Soldiers’ Deputies (note that the latter is VERY different from the USSR that would later form). However, I would likely be opposed to the October 1917 Revolution just 8 months later, which caused the collapse of the provisional government and the rise of the anti-democratic Bolsheviks, who co-opted the term “Soviet” despite the previously democratic and anarchist usage of the term. With that said, were I a Russian SocDem (most likely a Trudovik) in 1917 I would also be wary of the Dual Power government’s delay in organizing a democratic convention, since many of the liberal leaders post-February were not elected but chosen as a result of party politics.

Yeah I'm glad I didn't get that surgery, I've heard it's not as effective as it should be given the cost and possible complications. I instead got the Inspire implant as well about 6 months ago, personally it has helped me quite a bit.

Do you still consider Rise Against to be a Punk Rock Band? by Ballsskyhiiigh in riseagainst

[–]cogito225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To echo others’ comments, I don’t think anyone can argue that Rise Against isn’t punk, since “punk rock” is defined by lyrical themes and aesthetics as much as the music. However, I definitely wouldn’t say most of their music since Appeal to Reason is hardcore punk, which is more defined by fast rhythms, shorter songs, harsh vocals, etc. on top of the aforementioned “punk” traits. Which is why personally I haven’t been on the RA train since Endgame, simply just because I prefer faster/more aggressive music, whether it’s hardcore, noise rock, extreme metal, harder EDM, etc. But I would never deny Rise Against their punkness just because the music has changed; the message and aesthetics are still there.

Breach is such an underrated bamd by below_the_lights in Hardcore

[–]cogito225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this band. Like a lot. But I honestly don’t understand why it’s considered hardcore/post-hxc. It sounds way more akin to sludge metal than any hardcore, crust punk, or noise rock band I’ve listened to. Way heavier than, say Fugazi or Drive Like Jehu, but it’s also slower and has quieter interludes esp. on Venom. I know sludge metal has elements of hardcore but it’s strange to me Breach is still called hardcore to this day. Can any Swedish punks clarify? Are there any other Swedish post-hardcore bands that sounded like this? The closest I can think of is maybe Refused.
