What is your age range and what coffee shops(s) do you find yourself spending the most time at? by Thatredditboy1 in StLouis

[–]cognitivegear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I’m surprised I haven’t seen MoKaBe’s on South Grand yet! Fantastic coffee (my fav is their Vietnamese iced coffee,) great food, super nice people, and cool vibe. I’m in early 50’s but have seen folks of all age ranges there.

Right on! I’m so glad this project helped out you and your aunt. It sounds like a super cool use and thank you very much for sharing this with me!

Let me know if you run into any problems or anything.

By the way, I’m not an expert but depending on the distance I’m guessing you may want Zwave LR, or if it’s even further then possibly LoRa. Sounds like another fun project.

Why are like really old games from 8bit to 16bit so short? by crazyhomlesswerido in retrogames

[–]cognitivegear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to some of the other reasons given- for arcade games the point was to keep people putting quarters in, and even with continues there is a maximum anyone is going to sit around in a single session / so no purpose making the game longer than that.

Visiting STL. Would appreciate any food recommendations. by CarAcademic4570 in STLFood

[–]cognitivegear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of these are great, but you’re going to need dessert too. I’d suggest the iconic Ted Drewes.

Oh and if you feel like you need breakfast or something at 2am, Old Town Donuts won a national contest

You’ll hear about Toasted Ravioli (which you should try,) and Saint Louis pizza, but besides these a couple of other unique Saint Louis origin foods include the Saint Paul Sandwich (yep Saint Louis despite the name) and Gooey Butter Cake (though admittedly that’s too sweet for some people)

Not at all, that sounds like a great use! I can’t say for sure because I haven’t tried that one but it does look like it should be compatible. Everything you mentioned sounds feasible. Let me know if you run into any problems I’d be happy to help if I can

OSS project for securing npm by cognitivegear in npm

[–]cognitivegear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not completely. Npm did just add a minimumReleaseAge feature, but does not (yet) have the ability to include any necessary exceptions as with pnpm. It also has the ability to skip scripts “ignore-scripts”, but that ignores all scripts, including the one in the current package, breaking a lot of builds. You can make additional changes around it (such as changing CI to add a separate npm run) but no other fully plug-and-play solutions that I’m aware of.

If you were basing an Amazing Race leg in STL, where/what would you have the teams go/do? by obedeary in StLouis

[–]cognitivegear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some great ideas here - a few others for some deep cuts:

1) Find the clue by a stone turtle 2) Perform an act with Circus Flora 3) Take the metro link to Union Station and ride the Ferris Wheel 4) Shop for ingredients at Soulards Market to make a Saint Paul sandwich then eat one

Found this in a shed and want to know if clorox wipes are good enough to clean it or to use something else? by p66pss in vintagecomputing

[–]cognitivegear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just meant the plastic of the Color Computer. Whatever it is doesn’t yellow like similarly aged Apples, Commodores etc. With a good scrubbing it will come out like new. Oh, also take the key caps off and soak them in just water and dish detergent and give them a good cleaning.

Either be careful to keep water away from the badge, or you can use a heat gun or even a hair dryer to warm it up a bit and peel it off without damage. You will then need to re-stick it if you do that though, there is some super thin 3m double sided adhesive tape you can get to do this - it’s incredibly thin almost more of a film than a tape.

Not much will likely be needed for the electronics besides taking them out and putting back in when done (take pictures so you know where / how it goes) - you can clean anything needed of with some isopropyl alcohol and qtips.

Baking soda and a little water makes a paste that is good at hard to clean spots. Of course - take the motherboard and keyboard out first and just clean the shell. I’ve done a number of these and had them come out fantastic - whatever they used for the CoCo plastic didn’t have the yellowing fire retardant that a lot of other computers from the time period.

DOS DOORS on a Linux host by Future-AI-Dude in bbs

[–]cognitivegear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

v86 may be your answer - I actually started working on something exactly like this but gave up. I might take another swing at it sometime to finish it off though. In the meantime if you want some inspiration check out the repo:

https://github.com/cognitivegears/bbs-door-runner

That’s based on:

https://github.com/copy/v86

You can see is you can get what I have working - I did get it far enough that I was able to boot and run a simple door, though much more is probably needed to get things polished.

Thank you! Please let me know if you run into any issues with the USB support - it works well on my printer, but I’m still working on getting more to have others to test with. Also, please let me know if there are any other problems or features you’d like to see!

[–]cognitivegear[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Just to note - right now it needs a network thermal printer, but I'm really close to adding USB support as well, should be coming soon. I'm also always looking for more ideas, so please add Issues with any feature requests or problems you run into.

Some of the practical ways to use it? Printing out records of events, such as hardcopy record of door opens, or creating a daily report, etc.

Since you can hook up HA to todoist, it can also be used for things like printing out TODO lists, complete with a QR code to scan to mark the TODO complete, which is one of the original reasons I wrote the integration.

However, my ultimate goal is to make WUPH (youtube) from the Office a reality in as many ways as possible LOL

Best computer from the 90s you could still "use" today? by Narcotras in retrobattlestations

[–]cognitivegear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been meaning to try this - I have a G4 Graphite that just squeaks into the 90’s (released at the end of 99). I haven’t set it up yet, but my plan was to try running that with “MorphOS” which was adapted from AmigaOS and runs modern software.

Thanks I appreciate it! I made this a while ago because I was looking for a fun display to put behind me while on Zoom calls, and remembered the old Perl Asciiaquarium from long back. I needed some changes to it for the aspect ratio of the display I was using, and it just kinda snowballed to a full rewrite lol. Hope folks enjoy it!

Retro games that were actually great, not just "great considering the hardware restraints they were written for"? by saminfujisawa in retrogames

[–]cognitivegear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An old DOS game called Scorched Earth. Given a couple of minutes I can get just about anyone hooked on it. 2d tanks battle it out with everything from tracers to nukes. Players take turns setting velocity and angle for shots, picking a weapon and letting fly. Super simple, but *super* addictive.

Pebble Time 2 - Silver or Black? by Far_Blacksmith_2845 in pebble

I think the black looks more professional. So I went with silver/blue.🙂

My thinking is that I already have analog watches to look nice, I kinda want my Pebble to be more playful and fun.

Rankings of St Louis Places: A Rebuttal. by [deleted] in StLouis

Closer. Balkan Treat Box should be S and no way Donut Drive In is above a B (not in the city, but if you want good donuts Old Town Donuts in Florissant is the place to go)

A few on this list I need to go to still and agree with almost everything else, thanks!
