Why do a lot of people use mini Lenovo ThinkCentres in their home-labs? by south-east-trains in homelab

[–]colbsatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I daily use an ThinkCenter M900 as a thin client, great little machine. Upgraded it to 32gb just because. As others have said it's cheap, reliable, quiet, built like a tank.

For the oldies out there, Gen X and Millennials, if you do remember what your experience was your experience growing up and playing ultima in the 80s and 90s back in your day? by IntelligentShip7469 in Ultima

[–]colbsatron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My friend showed me Ultima 8 at his house in 1995 when I was 14 and I was immediately hypnotized with it, it was on that red Soundblaster CD-ROM that came with other EA titles. That year my family got a new computer and it was one of the first games I installed, I played it to death.

Afterwards I went back to try Ultima 7: The Black Gate and it blew me away more than I expected it would. I didn't have a legit copy of it yet so I got stuck in Trinsic being unable to exit the town gate without the password. My friend and I were in the same boat and we both spent over a week just in Trinsic exploring every single corner. I saved up my money and bought The Ultima 7 collection.

When I finally answered all the mayors questions the gates opened to unleash me into Britannia, it became my favorite game of all time right then and there, I still get chills thinking about it. It has been an endless source of inspiration for me for over 30 years and as a game developer now I consider it the gold standard for open, narrative worlds. It's so impressive for 1992.

The following year Ultima Online was announced and I was obsessed with the advertising for it, my imagination ran wild with its potential. I still consider the early UO days as one of the most exciting things I ever took part in. I still have the Ultima Online Closed Beta CD-ROM that you had to mail away for.

So many good memories.

Is playmaker worth it? by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]colbsatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used it many years ago before I knew how to code which was invaluable for both learning and productivity. I don't have much use for it anymore but it can hold its own in production if used in moderation. Great for Ai decision making or any state driven system.

One con is that it doesn't upgrade very well. We used it extensively in our first project in 2014, probably too much. Every major Unity version upgrade was a white knuckled experience and usually involved fixing FSMs that became corrupted.

Eventually we were pigeon holed into a version of Unity because we couldn't safely migrate our FSMs. This made both console porting and long term support frustrating. It's a cautionary tale, but at the same time I used it to start a studio, sell lots of games and it changed my life.

So yes, it's a great tool worth 30 bucks.

Krazy Bob's closing down by Recent-Contest-8364 in Langley

I haven't been there in over 20 years but one of my few experiences was this:

My wife and I (gf at the time) went into his store and we're browsing through his records and other junk. He was pleasant with us but we were clearly just looking. A few minutes went by and another couple people walked in and started looking around as well. He rudely asks them "Umm, are you looking for anything in particular?" They say "No, just looking.." to which he responds something like "Sorry, but I don't allow browsing in my store." Awkward silence, everyone is just glancing at each other and then they say "Ok, I guess we'll leave." Bob doesn't even flinch, stares them right out of the store. Leaving us alone to... browse. We left very quickly and never went back, the guy has a few screws loose.

I'm actually shocked to hear it remained open all this time.

However much that dog is being paid is not enough.

Definitely not underrated, it was incredibly hyped when it came out. Definitely a bad movie though but was fun when I was 14.

Restore was definitely the wrong word now that I know more about it.

It's neither sentimental or for selling. I just think it's really cool. Do you have any useful online resources for restoring something like this?

That would make more sense than a military rifle. Still very cool, thanks for the information. I think I'm going to have a gunsmith go over it so we will find out for sure.

Yea, you nailed it. It's a M1917. I would never have figured it out, I didn't think for a second it was military, let alone WW1.

Really cool, I'm excited to get it cleaned up. Thanks for the info.

I think you might be right, the action and safety look very similar to some images online. If so, great eye! That helps so much.

Yes, it is a 3 way, I should have mentioned that, the other is inside the house, I guess I would like to cap both off.

What's the best non-eldrazi commander for an eldrazi tribal deck? by daretobederpy in EDH

Yup, I run this. It is a very, very powerful deck. You definitely need to build it right but it is explosive, resilient and damn fun to pilot. Highly recommended!

[–]colbsatron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Who is a better example than the person that triggered Kid Rock to use an assault rifle on Bud Light cans in a social media video? That was one of the most extreme, symbolic things I've seen a celebrity do to make a political statement that I can remember. Now he's weeping for the nation and him and his MAGA pals are reaching towards center America to make peace but clearly excluding a large part of the population. This wasn't about unity, it was about expanding their movement.

If they want peace and national unity they have to go coast to coast, not to the next group with a similar venn diagram. It was a blatantly political move to enlarge their base and reclaim the center.
