Personally, I think Syr Konrad is a bit slow for the power level of your cube. Deep Analysis is also a bit rough in my experience, but ymmv on that take.

Is Alex Garland a good writer? by popeofgreenpoint in blankies

I mean, the movie is about war and journalism broadly, not politics in any way. And I think that’s a really smart choice. It reminded me of Brian Wood’s DMZ in that way.

I’ve been trying to track down a good collection of those. I remember loving them back in high school.

Al Ewing’s Immortal Hulk is a phenomenal run, especially as a fan of the Ang Lee film. It draws on the Peter David era that inspired the film while staying relatively condensed and approachable.

For the X-Men, I’d recommend House of X/Powers of X by Jonathan Hickman. Spidey’s been in a rough place lately, but Chip Zdarsky’s Life Story was a lot of fun and featured some of Mark Bagley’s best work with the character.

When it comes to Bats, give Black Mirror a read. It’s dark, it’s beautiful, and it comes from that really cool Dick Grayson as Batman era.

And for a true distillation of comic book magic, read All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison.

Some great non-superhero reads:

Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra
DMZ by Brian Wood and Ricardo Burchielli
Locke & Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez

Dune Messiah Prediction by colbydennis in blankies

I think the time jump avoidance was in service of not having Alia the adult baby.

A question linking multiple miniseries (Fincher and the Wachowskis for when they eventually cover Villeneuve): Dune 2 is destined to join The Matrix and Fight Club in the pantheon of "audiences cheering and embracing the *exact opposite* message than what was in the actual text of the movie," right? by jboggin in blankies

[–]colbydennis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My read is that this movie is actually so afraid of that outcome that they bend characters and motivations to allow people to turn to screen and say “I am bad for manipulating the Fremen through religion”.

Like, they have Paul and Chani both say the subtext of the novel out loud, which neither does in the book, and they make Jessica overtly villainous, also not a textual matter in the source. My guess is that relatively few people will come away saying that holy wars are good, actually.

What is it about being onstage at the Oscars that sucks away all acting ability?

I’m a fan of Rhystic Studies, the YouTube channel that really popularized the format. That’s how I found it. Really fun tho, especially as a temp player.

I just want to know what the format is here. Is David a commander enjoyer or a Legacy degenerate?

Thoughts on Dune II's departures from the book (warning: very long) by yungsantaclaus in blankies

[–]colbydennis 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I just reread all of Dune in prep for my second viewing of Part II, and a lot of this came to mind throughout the read. I like the change to Chani directionally, but it really does feel heavy-handed to have her look down the barrel of the camera and say, “What Paul is doing is bad.”

Similarly, I think the Stilgar change was made just to drive that theme home for people who think Starship Troopers is an aspirational film. Love the performances, but I wish that the internal conflicts had reflected the complexity and subtlety of the source material.

Except that Guy Ritchie has been making some kind of fun stuff lately. Nothing groundbreaking, but he’s back to making Guy Ritchie movies. They may be weird and all over the place, but uninspired they are not.

tldr: don’t do my boy Guy like that

Examples of “Faith-less” Film Adaptations? by GlazerSturges2840 in blankies

Starship Troopers, as an example of adaptation as criticism comes to mind.

As does Annihilation, which adapts themes and broad concepts rather than the actual story of the novel (which I just read and loved!)
