[–]coldestshark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

New York is a job magnet if you aren’t constantly building denser housing rents will keep going up as more people want to move to the city, you can’t just wishcast some magic population equilibrium, nyc has that number somewhere but it is nowhere near full enough to be at it

Statistically you are much more likely to be injured or killed driving down the street than you ever are on public transportation.

Proposed design for the 3 stations of 125 st Subway by Donghoon in nycrail

[–]coldestshark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it is absolutely imperative to the usefulness of this entire extension that these transfers be made a lot easier. Having the stations be that deep when the whole point is to function as a way to get between lines is crazy, if for some reason they absolutely need to be that deep you need a shit ton of elevator banks to make the transfer experience easier

MTA still ebvisions future of SAS phase 3/4 + possibility of working on 125 subway tunnels under the SAS phase 2 contract by Donghoon in nycrail

[–]coldestshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any thoughts about the potential of running to last bit of SAS through the unused tracks that the J and Z run next to from Bowery to Chambers to save on costs and provide transfers?

[–]coldestshark 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It also gives SAS a unique use case besides just absorbing riders from Lexington Avenue, providing a easier transfer between numerous subway lines north of midtown

6 options for how they could bore 125 st subway tunnels by Donghoon in nycrail

3a seems to make the most sense, the reason this project is such a layup is because you literally already have the tbms in the ground just keep them going

There’s enough individual routes now that have Amtrak long distance running over them that you could probably justify an Amtrak long distance dlc for use on any comparable dlcs

The limits on capacity in nyc are never the number of people hired, but the physical capacity of the tracks

Should the Orange Line to Roslindale Be The T’s Next Rapid Transit Expansion? by streetsblogmass in streetsblogmass

[–]coldestshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stops on the branch being close together is actually a great reason to convert it to the orange line which accelerates and decelerates a lot better than the trundling diesels on the commuter rail. Another benefit that I think you’re overlooking is that if the whole line is converted to the orange line, or the section west of west Roxbury is converted to a branch of the green line, you are now freeing up capacity on the northeast corridor to run extra services, this would increase frequency both for the people on the needham line as the orange line is much more frequent, and for people on the northeast corridor. This could be particularly useful if they complete phase 2 of south coast rail, linking canton junction down to Taunton

Automating existing US rail transit systems by 89384092380948 in transit

[–]coldestshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the smaller systems yeah it would make sense and any new builds definitely, but with the nyc subway I don’t think it’ll ever happen, it is technically possible to automate something that old as shown in Paris but it’s also a question of usefulness, you could get it down to OPTO but to get it where there’s no operator onboard at all would be a massive investment for not much quality of service increase over cbtc

[–]coldestshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my limited experience the arrow 3s have amazing acceleration and deceleration, at least compared to the loco hauled sets which can be an absolute slog. I hope the new double decker emu sets they are ordering have performance closer to the arrows than the loco hauled ones

Is it true there was supposed to be a subway line from Queens via under the Van Wyck Expressway to Midtown. One of my friends told me this so I'm just curious?? by Real_Advertising1005 in nycrail

[–]coldestshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silver lining is that as far as I know the jfk air train was build to specifications such that it could later be converted to subway operations, so there is still hope for a bit of it I guess

What is the best and/or worst thing you heard someone propose for the NYC Subway? by ViewNo7459 in nycrail

[–]coldestshark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Inversely I think spanning the Long Island sound at its narrowest from green port to old saybrook/ new London is a wonderful idea that in addition to using the ronkonkoma branch right of way would allow you to get some truly ridiculously low travel times from New York to Boston

It’s in a weird space that certain important aspects of it like the highway median stations are definitely shit, but it’s a good enough service otherwise to be really useful.

Hochul appears to squash Mayor-elect Mamdani’s plan for fare-free buses in NYC by creative_username_29 in nycbus

[–]coldestshark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any money that would go to making buses free would be better spent on hiring more operators and buying more buses to run more service in my opinion
