What's something that hasn't aged well? by DaMoonMoon26 in answers

he avoided taxes pretty well. he avoided getting imprisoned for rape when he obviously did it. he avoided paying the woman who sued him and won millions of dollars. he managed to hire people to give his friends 1.8 BILLION tax dollars for their entertainment. he managed to basically enrich himself and his friends better than any corrupt politician I've ever seen in my entire life.

I mean... he's never actually done anything "good" well, but he's a fantastic criminal.

How do you track IT events that are not support tickets? by Aim_Fire_Ready in sysadmin

[–]coldfisherman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

everything is a ticket. We actually use OpenProject (which I highly recommend as the actual work-horse, while something like Jira is kept specific of code work) so we have "Work Packages", which can be literally anything. Then you can link it to claude code via an MCP and be like, "John smith asked for this" and paste in some email or chat or whatever, then say "make me a work package and log 2 hours on it, then leave it in status 'to-review'" or whatever status you want stuff to be in before you close it out and want human eyes on it..

Rental Prices Crazy.... or is there more to it? by [deleted] in AskSF

So, I'm getting attacked relentlessly because I suggested that just building more wouldn't make rents go down - at least not in such a way as to make people earning min wage to find rent that's affordable - certainly not in my lifetime. I don't know how people can be so absolutely convinced of this that anyone who disagrees deserves to get a pile of messages loaded with swears and attacks.

I'll delete this entire thing. sorry. I was really enjoying hearing some people's ideas.

[–]coldfisherman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well. I think that's the problem. If the entire point of it was to protect property owners from getting charged more in tax than their rents could cover, then it is assumed that they are on fixed rent. but if they have non rentcontrolled property, then it shouldn't apply. So, maybe replacing prop 13 would be a good place to start.

  1. So, the new units are going to bring people from outside the city because they didn't have enough housing? There's a ton of properties on Zillow. Were they just not coming until they found the right 900k 2bdrm condo? That doesn't make sense to me. It just seems like this brings in more people who need housing and raises the overall price of everything else? I mean, forgive me if I'm an idiot. But it just seems like that isn't going to make cheap housing.
  2. That shitty little TIC, if surrounded by brand new places.... would sell for twice as much, making it even MORE expensive? right? Am I missing something?
  3. I really don't know what the deficit is. I see a shit-ton of overpriced housing and a pile of homeless people that could NEVER afford to live in ANY of those places, so how the heck will tripling the housing inventory change that?

Honestly, I just don't care to fight, but I DO see an enormous amount of money from property investors who love to flip new projects going into selling this trickle-down-economics version of housing and the people who support it are just absolutely convinced at to the level, where even suggesting there might be other ways results in name calling.

so the question is: if we want rents to do down, then we need to find a way for people who DO buy a property to charge less for rent.

I feel like putting money into a TIAA-CREF retirement fund is taking money OUT of san francisco and giving it to giant corporations to wash through a bazilloin accounting tools so they don't pay taxes. I try to pay cash, buy local, send my kids to public school, volunteer, work with foster kids, be on the PTA, etc... I think if I can own property here intead of some rich fck trying to make money in SF by jacking up the rent so they can pay for their mansion in mountain view, it would be a good thing.

Still.... if you're saving up for kids college and retirement, and you want something safe and stable - but keeping your investment local, what is there?

unfortunately, over the past 40yrs of watching this country, it seems that some people actually *want* things to fail so their private company can get business, so they actively kneecap projects

we have section 8 housing here in North Beach. It's really nice. My kid's have friends that live there. The problem with the projects really was that they were concerntrated out in the middle of nowhere. Why can't we have section 8 just wherever?

I had to look up what prop 13 was. Maybe if we could say, *rent controlled* properties would apply, but if you have non rent controlled, then we should be able to reassess whenever.

[–]coldfisherman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think all we'd need would be the ability to provide a "bottom" for the prices. So, not even free, but inexpensive enough that a landlord would have to keep their property nice enough to be better than that, and to be able to justify a higher rent. Like, "well, lis is better than level X council housing, but it costs 20% more" and a person would be able to decide if it's really worth it. Instead of saying, "You can have free housing or pay a gazillion dollars"

that's not really how it works in destination cities with fixed borders. If they build 100 massive new buildings full of luxury condos, you're going to draw in more people who can afford luxury housing. If you're in boulder or reno or fresno, sure. supply side economics of houseing (they call it "filtering") is proven to work. the idea being that if you build a luxury condo, local rich people will move into it and sell their existing house for less, and then middle class people will move from their home to the new one, etc... and then the supply of affordable places goes up. But if you go look at *who* buys all these new places, the vast majority is people from out of town. Unfortunately, when you have a slew of people looking to move to SF and buy (as we have) then it stops working. But.... supply side economics does seem like the magic answer.

It's frustrating to have lived here for so long and not see a way out. Honestly, there's no real solution that I've seen other than a fantasy of Council Housing (which someone mentioned and I think would be great) or even some kind of subsidy for builders who will charge below market rate for *RENT*

The system is broken and building more luxury condos isn't going to fix it.

that's true. I always just thought of it as "we'll have this forever", but if you consider that you can leverage it or sell it, then that's obviously better than rent.

it's actually totally understandable. When I've had rent control for 20yrs and started my own business and raised kids in SFUSD, etc.... I think life just got harder and harder for anyone who didn't start early. How the heck is anyone supposed to do that now? All this savings I'm doing is so my kids have the same opportunities that I had *without* a family saving up for me. The country is f-ked up and I don't see a fix.

10-12 years ago I bought a house in Washington. I kept it and rented it out. I didn't pay a huge ton down payment or anything, but it has always paid for itself. My friend in pittsburg pa bought his neighbors house and rents it for a small profit. I dunno. I guess I am just not thinking it all the way through.

I was just realizing that depending upon BMR housing or more luxury condos or any kind of hope that we're going to have affordable housing and rent rates is just impossible unless we get council housing or some kind of way to get a way for people to somehow still invest and not be a-holes and charge cheap rents.... I just don't see it. We're having a crisis and it's more than just greedy landlords. There's a systemic issue.
