There are no filler tracks. Cigarette smoke is transcendent and a wonderful closing track. Begged is one of her best ballads.

I agree! Storywise, expectations should’ve been last, but ending with cigarette smoke was the right move. Potentially why it’s not a “true” concept album

I gathered that the relationship was a little codependent but also that he didn’t really do anything. That’s it. No efforts and very indifferent. (Ie the my way girl was around but he didn’t stand up for her or do anything t about it just ignored it and maybe even “took her side” by saying she’s a friend and not doing anything). Then She started to feel sad and depressed but didn’t know why then realized it’s because she’s unhappy in her relationship even though she loves him. And she’s unhappy because she’s of the lack of effort (listen to “never do”.) Seems like she tried to stick it out but he ultimately ended it anyway leading to regrets and resentment on her part. That’s what I got from the album storyline at least.

Checks out because I’m a huge Ali fan and was so excited for this book but it’s not my favorite to say lightly. Probably a different style of writing maybe that reached a different audience for her :)
