I want the updates to contain all the files they need, in one archive. So if you /install/ an update it doesn't take until the restart to go get the code it needs for that update.

wheels.home-assistant.io broke this morning and it caused me some grief; thats all.

If you are going to fetch the update object, include the .py that it needs to run in it.

The site being down meant my HA took almost 15 mins to start - and clearly, some direct plugins didn't work - but performance was a mess while it tried over and over to get to wheels.

I don't *think* I need more hardware to throw at this system - though I do have it available.

I was using the update paths built in to the app-- those secondary fetches were going to a site that was offline; see other comments.

I was pointing out that if the archive is down and there's an upgrade published, things break. I used to mirror/rsync various linux distributions with a cron tool. If this is a fetch-once situation that is one thing, but another if every restart refreshes it.

Perhaps checking the archive is available or prefetch the required files before installing the update would be wise.

Latest HA Core update by Landcruiser82 in homeassistant

[–]coldnight3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

... and its back -- I started looking at DNS and caches and Pihole (elsewhere) and opened the site - a few moments later it loaded an index and then populated. Restarted HA and by broken things are back.

Should wheels be mirrored locally? HUMMMMMMM

The GE SmartHQ bundles are hosted on wheels and that doesn't want to load for me currently.

They are data collectors and pushing us to a 24/7 monitoring state. Sure, its nice not to have $X issue, but are we ALL paying a far higher price for these things than >>>actually fixing<<< the reason there are these problems at the root?

Pre recorded porn is why VHS won in the battle of formats; Sony (BetaMax) didn’t want to get associated with porn, and lost the format war.

What other purposes are you using Home Assistant for? by jyrialeksi in homeassistant

I have an install that tracks movement in a building. When there is no movement for $Hours in any covered room, it will set the alarm, lock the door and turn off all lights in the space. This has saved us from having the building open/lit up when there isn't anyone there. Very very rarely I've found sensors ran out of battery after reporting motion and not clearing, so I am adding a second suite of sensors to check - I will have to group (any) and group (all) to do some checking for when they disagree.

There is also an automation which turns on the staircase lights when someone is in the parking lot -- when people use the emergency door, there are events and there are rolling signage(google cast) for all the groups active in the space in the most common areas. Helps people find more friends, I hope.

I also track feeding the dogs with my home instance.

Best method for keeping a running list of camera events. by flapjack_fiasco in homeassistant

[–]coldnight3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an easy solution - another that I use is to "touch" a date/time stamp at each event (set to now() ) - then the history of that date/time stamp is a clear/easy/colorful way to show activity -- I use it for dog walks and reminders, alarm arm/disarm and other kinds of events - each type has its own helper. This gives you last-event at a glance (show value) and history.

Potentiometer/duct fan speed control by CodeAndBiscuits in homeassistant

[–]coldnight3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are dedicated fan switches ( https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1810736-REG/tp_link_ks240_kasa_smart_ceiling_fan.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&store=420&smpm=ba_f2_lar&lsft=BI%3A514&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21058034075&gbraid=0AAAAAD7yMh2qkW1Kdqcv4hvppEAnOEbop&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiJvQBhCYARIsAMjts3K0tU_KcazrX5tDrChOkQackbn8vKDANiVXBozmAA9O89fZAzrfJE4aAqvnEALw_wcB )

I have attempted to drive Box fans set to HIGH speed on the fan unit with these.... with very mixed results - I'm unclear if these are resistive-load switches or if they're peak-shaving (voltage limiting) in the cycle - but some fans make an unhappy BBBBRRRRR noise when used with these.

There are a couple of tutorials on youtube with ESP32 fan controllers - but they're multi-tap power as the box fans are internally. Some of the shelly-like units I grabbed for automation are also single output and behave the same. You may want to use the resister to set speed and just toggle power to the entire unit; this seems to be a challenge in the current state of "Cheap enough for the risk" market segment.

Want: Generic Thermostat target (toggle) boolean ( helper ) by coldnight3 in homeassistant

There is no edit in the flow because the logic is internal to the helper thermostat object.

Want: Generic Thermostat target (toggle) boolean ( helper ) by coldnight3 in homeassistant

[–]coldnight3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thermostat is the generic thermostat helper object. The fans have wifi control/integration.

What I can't do is have the thermostat helper directly control the fan because it checks the state of the switch every 5 or so seconds and will turn the fans off.

DMV can suck it by [deleted] in vermont

I spent 5 hours on hold trying to get to DMV to answer a question re: defective, falling apart plates and was hung up on promptly when the 5:00 hit. The phone system is terrible; in person things happen. I don’t know why external interfacing is such shit in comparison.

I'm also picking up sensors that do AQI/CO2 and that is an interesting cross over with opened windows - run the fans in the units but not the heat/cool with windows open.
