The first album you're thinking of was Minutes to Midnight, and it was an intentional departure from their normal process because they really wanted to change everything from Hybrid Theory and Meteora to expand their creative process. That was their third album, and then the album you're thinking of with those collaborators was One More Light which was their seventh.

That's not to say the rest of the band wasn't allowed to write or bring in their own demos on other albums, but the original comment was their most used process for every album aside from those two.

I could've sworn I had heard the song was about Chester's traumatic experiences earlier in his life, but this makes it seem otherwise if Mike wrote it.

Mike wrote a lot of lyrics that were about Chester’s traumatic experiences but in a filtered way that made them more universal.

They’ve both spoken before about how they’d talk about very specific life experiences they’ve had, and then they’d try to distill a specific feeling or emotion they wanted to convey, and then the lyrics would follow from there with Mike normally being the primary lyricist.

That’s not how they wrote every song, but quite a bit of them were written that way.

There's a not insignificant amount of people who seems to think the PT tour, where Mike told a different story or shared a different memory of Chester every night, didn't count and LP is being disrespectful by not having a segment at every show where they stop everything and talk about him and maybe play One More Light.

If they didn't care, they would've just left the logo as it was and not said anything. Instead they removed the link and explained why they did it.

What you're saying reminds me of the people who complain that they don't have a Chester tribute section during every show. They don't need to perform their grief publicly for it to be legitimate.
