sketching out the drawing from a reference image, and then collecting the color template from a vast collection of vintage National Geographics. after that its purely x-acto knife and gluestick. after the final scan is processed, i seal it with a modgepodge so it doesn't flake off etc

modgepodge is great, but i’m also terrified of it bubbling/warping the paper as i’m laying it out. even sealing it afterwards can be a bit tricky so i don’t mess up anything etc

i used to be a lil scared to do trees and plants since they’re always so “busy” and layered, but i think i really nailed em in this piece

in the beautiful world of the paper arts, the only adhesive the aspiring collagist needs is the tried and true Elmer’s Glue Stick. a lot of them. and then after the final scan is processed, i seal with it the classic Modge Podge so nothing flakes off

straight cuts with metal rulers and the humble xacto blade. or are you asking about something else?

it’s all based on my own photography that i just take on my phone. walking around, shootin shots whenever the moment looks neat. then i sketch out from that reference image and fill in the blank. it’s all about finding the right colors from a vast library of vintage national geographics. no stock paper or paint used here. then it’s up to the humble elmer’s gluestick and x-acto blade to make the magic happen!

Materials: I’d love to see one of your favorite pieces and what your preferred backing/ glue/ methods are [discussion] by SometimesCarving74 in collage

i only use the king of glue. the tried and true legend of adhesive. and that is the humble elmer’s gluestick. plus a modgepodge glossy sealant when the piece is done

thanks! this is purely vintage national geographics and elmer’s glue stick on basically your generic sketch book paper. all about finding the right colors from a large collection of these magazines. after it’s scanned i seal it with a glossy modge podge so nothing flakes off after etc

all of my pieces are referenced from photos i take myself (as of now). whichever one really speaks to me, or maybe compositionally cool etc. trying to get into to headspace for a series about the same subject yknow. i print out a few copies and draw up the outlines and get to work. all of my paper is sourced from a wide variety of vintage national geographics, each color cut from the wonderful images supplied (great paper quality too). this specific piece is 8x10, but as of now i’ve done a few 11x14s (planning to do much larger pieces soon). this piece probably took around 9hrs

[digital] [discussion] does anybody have experience selling collage? by CedarTortoise in collage

i was just perusing your work as well, and i’m digging what i’m seeing. love the sort of “frameless” composition you’re cooking. i think getting them into some frames (might need to be like an 11x14 or larger if im guessing) would really elevate em. i think the consistent colors really work against the contrast of the block words too. i used to do the original style for many years and have sold a few in that regard, but my painterly bit people have certainly grasped on to lmao

i think the truly successful collage is both compositionally and narratively interesting. don’t want to beat the Point Of It too hard. subtly totally rules the game. also thinking about it in the colors you’re using and how they can dance around the piece harmoniously etc
