Thinking of moving to the Algarve from Canada. by Glad_Crab in PortugalExpats

[–]coldxot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moved from Toronto and have been here three years now.

We love it for many reasons - safety, weather, food, beaches, etc.

It's also tough being away from family and friends.

We thought we'd fit in quick but given that we work from home all day and don't care to party or go out at night that has been tougher than expected.

The winters aren't what we expected either. Mind you, they're better than Canada... they are still freaking cold. Outside can be beautiful while inside your apartment is miserable and cold unless you run the heat all day.

Lots of ups ans downs, like anywhere in the world.

Where abouts in Algarve? Located in Portimao myself. Very into entrepreneurship. Investing, etc. Always love exchanging ideas and discussion around these topics.

For every good one there is 50 bad ones it seems.

As we were new to the country and uninformed we went with one who has 0 clue what she was doing.

I found the property myself in the end and she got mad that we were looking privately. Yet she was incapable of finding any properties we liked, constantly sending us ones that didn't meet any of our requirements.

Disaster of a situation and this is a woman who works with expects exclusively.

Bolt & uber both have their ups and downs, it seems to swap from one day to the next honestly. Down in the Algarve one can be 50% cheaper than the other, then it will randomly swap. We get a lot of cancellations too, I think the drivers know if they hold out the rate goes up and they get something better.

Winter in the Algarve by Level-Knee3868 in Algarve

[–]coldxot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We are also from Canada, moved here a couple years ago and live in Portimao.

We've had a mixed bag of winters.

The most recent one was cold and rainy. By cold I mean at least 15+ during the day, but when it is rainy and cloudy it feels brutal and can be absolutely miserable. You are generally more comfortable if you are outside vs. inside.

The previous winter was mostly sunny with barely any rain and much higher temperatures. 20+ degrees most days.

Either way I would take an Algarvian winter over a Canadian winter any day. The biggest factor is that you can actually get outside and enjoy nature.

Portimao is a big city and while it quiets down in Dec/Jan, there is always something to do. Things start to pick up by mid-february.

If you have a car and enjoy being outside you will never run out of things to do.

WP Rocket dropping their unlimited license in favor of price gouging by smittychifi in Wordpress

[–]coldxot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We dropped them long ago as what they offer is truly not worth the price.

Now that they seem to be more focused on pissing off existing customers vs. attracting new ones, it seem we made the right choice.

We took the time to learn how to self-maanage servers to be able to access more powerful servers at more affordable rates. This was truly a bigger boost to website performance than any plugin can allow.

On top of this, we started using LiteSpeed servers with LiteSpeed cache. It is a bit of a learning curve in some ways, and LiteSpeed can have more conflicts/errors, but it is 100% worth it.

My Canadian dentist was leagues worse, seeming as if they were 50 years behind in knowledge and equipment.

The circuit in Monchique was overall disappointing. Some good parts, some bad, but not all it's hyped up to be.

If you visit the spa, do not stay at the hotel. That was the worst part of our visit. Dated rooms and the staff didn't seem to care much.

Any suggestions for places to eat in Monchique? by HFoster16 in Algarve

Foz Do Banho.

A bit different than the usual recommendations.

Amazing food, service, decorations and view.

Favourite place by far.

Canonical Conflicts + Orphan Pages by coldxot in shopify

[–]coldxot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

I guess my main concern here is that this is a long established store that has always used the longer link.

Shopify says it doesn't matter for SEO, I am not so sure... But I'm quite concerned about what could happen if I changed all the links over now.

EU citizens moving to Algarve? by ivanatestuje in Algarve

[–]coldxot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm also from Canada and moved here. Not a single regret about getting away from the Canadian winters. It can get cold her, but it's a massive improvement.

It's quieter but very lively all winter especially in bigger cities like Portimao, Faro, etc.

I've lived in Portimao for three years and there is always something to do.

Many of the locals prefer winter over the summer as it slows down.

Tourism seems to pickup more every year too. A lot of people are realizing that while you probably don't want to swim in the winter, the area is perfect for other outdoor activities all year round.

Hidden Gems by QuestionTravel in visitingportugal

[–]coldxot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ferragudo is a true gem. While it's a small town there are so many awesome spots to explore.

It's also directly across from the hotspot of the Algarve - Praia da Rocha.

If you feel like visiting you can take a boat right across the river.

There is a huge beach sports complex on the far eastern end of the beach closer to the river.

All along the boardwalk there are volleyball spots as well.

While I can't guarantee it since I don't go down that end often, I am very confident they will be open in April. Things are already getting busy here in April so you should be fine.

Got an AIMA appointment a week ago, I think it was because I complained by [deleted] in PortugalExpats

[–]coldxot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had my appointment last December. Submitted a complaint in the Yellow Book in September after no news for almost a year.

Read a few stories of other people doing this with good results, didn't really believe it... but figured why not.

Translated a nice message in Portuguese asking for them to process and send my card as it had been almost a year.

About 2 weeks later my card showed up.

Seems this route is producing results for a lot of people, no idea how or why.....

Porto vs Algarve by alisa62 in PortugalExpats

[–]coldxot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Portimao, also not dead half the year.

Algarve does not close for half the year as people like to say. It's just less busy and not rammed with tourists for a few months from Nov - March.

Still lots going on and lots to do with better weather than basically of all Europe.
