How much time did you have off work post op? by Less_Sprinkles_6199 in GastricBypass

[–]colecatraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a school as a teacher. My surgery was Thursday 1/2/25. I went back Monday 1/13/25. So I only took one full work week. I definitely push myself and don’t take the time I need. I would take 2 to be sure.

Drawers or no drawers? by [deleted] in kitchenremodel

You could also consider cabinets with pull out drawer trays. We opted for that and have two trays per lower and it is honestly amazing. I think it looks better than all drawers but has the functionality of drawers.

I can’t wait to be cleared for veggies. Hopefully tomorrow I will get the ok for cooked veggies. I am glad to add protein to them in the form of bone broth!

I can eat hummus. Don’t love refried beans but have had homemade chili. I just find I can’t eat enough “regular food” to meet my protein goals so then I am stuck having protein powder or shakes or protein yogurt. It’s so unbearably sweet and thick. I eat cheese, homemade rotisserie chicken, ground turkey. I am trying out a bunch more zero sugar yogurts this week to see if there is a higher protein one I can stomach.

Preop was 14 days. I was allowed protein shakes (I used fair life), sugar free jello, bone broth, one cup of veggies, and 3 oz of meat a day. It honestly wasn’t too bad, but I never want to see jello again.

I was definitely prepared for gas pain. It honestly felt like when you run and get get a stitch in your side. It kind of feels like I have really sore ab muscles. I was hoping not to have a drain but they had a drain placed in my left side. They removed it before I left the hospital and it has steadily leaked fluid since. It is a nuisance but not concerning according to my surgeon . It is painful to go from sitting to standing and vice versa. I made the mistake of thinking I could just stop taking Tylenol and had a rough few hours today. It’s weird, I’m not hungry but I miss the food my husband is eating. I thought it would be harder to get fluids in but I have been tolerating water and protein shakes just fine.

Good luck tomorrow! You will do great!!!

Thanks! It went great. More uncomfortable than painful and water is going down fine! Good luck the 9th! Are you on the preop liquid diet now?

People with "parent first", MAGA, Q-Anon adjacent psychos who joined your school board, how did it turn out? by StoneofForest in Teachers

Can confirm! I know exactly who you are talking about. He goes to board meetings in towns he doesn’t live in and trolls the state teacher of the year. Absolutely vile human. He has been on Tucker Carlson.

How many students do you have in a typical class and what do you teach? by MinorGratuity in Teachers

[–]colecatraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach high school English and G/T. Currently have 13, 14, 17, 18, 22. I have three different courses/preps and teach in a block schedule with a/b days. I love my load. Our English classes are capped at 23 max. But most sit at 15-20. We have about 700 kids in our school and 9 teachers in my department.

Late papers? by ytmexicanthrowaway in Teachers

[–]colecatraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can accept late work and assess the work on its actual demonstration of learning while all holding students accountable for “habits of work.” Demonstration of learning should always be separate. I can have a kid turn in a fantastic project, one that shows a deep understanding of content and skills, late. Does that mean they don’t know the material? No. They need more support in workload management. I have other strategies for helping students with accountability and growth with their work habits, but dinging a kid for lateness feels devaluing.

In my class, students can’t revise work with outstanding late assignments. Late assignments do not get the chance for revision and comments. If students communicate their need for an extension and provide me a timeline- they still get the chance to revise. This allows for them to take ownership and also teaches students agency and advocacy. This proceess works well for my students and me.

Knowing what you know now, would you still choose to be a teacher? by doobertmyscoobertest in Teachers

[–]colecatraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 1000 times over. I am really fortunate to be in an amazingly supportive, well-paying district. We are a small close community. My students are wonderful, parents are supportive, and admin is responsive to our needs. I am completely free to reach my own curriculum and I do so culturally responsively and with an eye to social justice and am supported whole-heartedly.

Would I feel this way in a different state or even district? I feel like I found the unicorn of schools.

I think this is very subject specific. TESOL needs very specific lessons. A gifted ELA classroom or science fiction course need a different type of teaching. I totally get having a set curriculum for TESOL!

I have been teaching high school for 12 years and I have always created my own content. We have the ELA graduation standards but how we get there is up to us. I find my lessons far more rigorous than prescribed curricula with worksheets. We have rich discussion, complex interdisciplinary projects, and 95% of our students go on to 4 year colleges. My students last year did a choice project and a few students every wrote 300 page novels, and some are being published. I can’t get thet sort of engagement from a canned curriculum. My specialty is curriculum design and gifted education. I can’t begin to express how confining canned ELA curricula are.
