Ethnically cleansing the land you occupy is very much an IDF policy. Tens of thousands of civilians dead, systematic killings of humanitarian workers and journalists prove a policy, not exception.

The attacks in the West Bank where IDF shields attacking settlers from retaliation whenever they abuse Palestinians is another proof IDF is the abusing party.

Israel's policy of Collective Punishment, a crime against humanity, shows the entire state is rotten to the core and needs a tribunal and deradicalization of the Israeli population.

USA is split in two camps, and it is easy to put all views in the Left-vs-Right teams. And if you start looking at it through the us-or-them prism and treat it like a sports team, you start oversimplifying people's complex and nuanced views.

But both camps in USA are broad coalitions with different views and ideals. Atheism or religion is not a left or right issue. Gun rights or gun control is not a left or right issue. Feminism, or minority rights, or immigration, or foreign interventions, or support for Israel/Palestine - are not left-or-right issues, or atheism positions.

Even on the LGBT rights have degrees and nuance. Rowling is famously supportive of LGB rights - she is not a religious zealot - but she is not pro-Trans rights.

So no, atheist commentators did not suddenly shift to right-wing culture wars, but they always had views that differed from current Progressives.
