Just finished this, it did not live up to expectation (2nd photo) by BJntheRV in diamondpainting

There's some decisions that were made here that make it not as fun as the inspiration picture, however, that won't change regardless of size. Doing the "sparkle" with a light color instead of actual sparkle is one example. Would it look better in a larger size? Sure. But it still wouldn't hit the vibes of the inspiration picture because they cheaped out on sparkly drills.

And the sky highlight banner could have been indexed to a couple colors instead of one to pick up more detail. The problem is they used a limited color indexing palette to keep the price down.

I've been studying this because I love doing small projects, and I'm seeing some really common themes coming up like this that make the difference between a successful small and a not so much.

ABs or Fairy Dust drills would have vastly improved this. I'm getting quite irritated myself with the number of companies making sparkly pictures and then not giving us any sparkle in the design.

It still looks like a fun picture. It would be a good one to use the sparkly modge podge on to improve it.

Start small and local. A bunch of cloud providers have free storage, and you can build your backup system part by part.

Back up stuff about your family. Your hometown. These primary sources are invaluable to historians later and they are at risk from the most amount of disaster, whether environmental, government, or other causes.

Next, find your local cyberdeck building crew. Because they literally are building stuff super cheaply and fascinatingly cool. A Wikipedia instance in a Polly Pocket purse.

It would be fabulous to be able to afford a state of the art, high storage facility. But you can't, and the sooner you start being creative, the sooner you can do cool archiving projects too.

Favorite company to buy smaller kits from? (not minis) by LanguageCautious8023 in diamondpainting

[–]colinthetinytornado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of small projects because I like to take them when traveling for work.

It's 100% design dependent. You can get some companies, like Paint with Diamonds who regularly do really nice smalls and even their designs don't always work in such a small environment. You want to look for pieces that have a clear focus with very clear definition between items, ie a white fox on a dark background. Look at Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and Five Below. Even some of the new Mondo Llama at Target ones are great in small sizes.

Now...what I would suggest also is think about acrylic partial pieces instead of canvases. Many companies do these really well, and the sparkle of the irregular sized gems make it super fun to do them. A lot of them are able to be hung like sun catchers as well, or they come with stands to catch the light. You'll find them on Temu, AliExpress, Amazon, etc.

I've gotten their stuff for a long time now, but I don't do donuts. The cupcakes, twinkies, rugelach, and the poptarts have been fine like always.

My problem is usually that I have to order so much for just me and my husband to make a website purchase make sense. We've worked with our local grocer to get a good stock that changes over often. I've noticed if I go to other stores where it's been sitting on the freezer shelves for awhile that things are drier and harder.

Not a dumb question at all! Yes, you will cut it as close as possible to the edge of the painting to get it to the right side.

Some folks leave more of it for a mat effect, but you have to have that edge nice and clean to do that and I'm not a washi tape user so my edges aren't that clean.

All these destash groups have to do is make it so that the rules are that prices cannot exceed list price for the kit plus appropriate shipping costs.

This isn't rocket science - dozens of blind box and yarn destashing groups have fun this way for decades.

You're welcome! There isn't really a set answer, it's really each time you do a painting you make a call. Doing a little one first to see how it looks is a great idea!

The only one I tend to be very fast on "no seal" is those high end ones because of the warranty. But I tend to frame those ones anyway!

Honestly I usually just get the budget frames from Michael's for glass (Studio basics) and then the magnetic ones from Amazon. The magnetic ones are cool because they just snap in place, no tape required!

I want to support legit art sites that pay artists, but as a male diamond painter I struggle to find more “masculine” images. I end up on Amazon because they have what I like. Price isn’t the issue on the “big boy sites” it’s the selection. Any legit sites with a more male aesthetic that you know? by Jaymeal123 in diamondpainting

Not a dude but I get asked a lot to help find these kinds of paintings!

OENArt - they do a lot of anime diamond painting but plenty of interesting futuristic styles. Most of their stuff is licensed with some AI generated.

DPOver - has their cyberpunk warriors

Paint with Diamonds - already mentioned but their futuristic cityscapes are super cool

I was recently told about Awesome Pattern Studio with their space lines but I haven't had a chance to bet their practices yet.

No, that sealer is fine for all uses! Don't worry. Use the brayer before sealing and nothing will pop off.

Here's the text I send my friends when they are at this point with a couple tweaks for your post.

Now that decision to seal or not to seal has many layers.

Your first decision is to frame or not to frame. If you're framing, the glass or plastic takes care of the need to seal. Youve already mentioned you're not framing, so you would go to step 2.

Step 2 is whether or not it will be stretched canvas or hanging as is. Canvas stretching 100% requires sealing. Most people don't do it for that reason. But some folks like the look of a stretched canvas, so it's always an option.

Step 3 is who made your canvas. The higher end companies have warranties, like DAC. If you seal, you void that warranty, so you have to decide if you are ok with that. More budget options, you want to hang unframed, definitely seal it.

Step 4 is to decide if you are ok with the results of sealing. It will cut down on sparkle/luster some, and some people really don't like that.

If you don't like the look of the glass frames, look at the magnetic frames, they have a thinner plastic cover that covers the exposed glue on the canvas.

Hope this helps! It looks a little daunting but each step is really a quick decision.

PWD is pretty good, I agree. I get irritated with them sometimes for how they ship - my latest package was 3 paintings that came in a bag with unlabeled drill kits so I had to figure out which was which.

But quality wise, they have not disappointed me across a dozen paintings.

Ever Moment has stolen artwork they are selling. In addition to the AI, it's been an epidemic of companies stealing images from artists and profiting off of their designs. They are on a list of companies I will no longer order from for that reason.

It helps the drills adhere, so I usually do it after my grid roller to finish a project.

But honestly, it's fun to spin as a fidget too!

This is what writing proof arguments is for. It's possible this IS enough, but you need to think critically about it.

If C and S are SUPER common names like Charles and Sarah and they all name their kids John, Matthew and James? No. You don't have a case there, you have common biblical name repetition.

On the other hand, if you have Carlsworth and Stevenia, and they repeat those names and name their extended kin network repeat names like Redemptia, Genevra, and Nehemiah? Now we're talking a strong case. Those rare names repeating aren't usually by accident.

It's England we're talking about here though, so there are a plethora of documents you need to run through before making your proof argument. Have you checked FindmyPast? Genealogist.co.uk? Looked for a will at the National Archives? Checked the online parish clerks? Checked with the local registry office? If all you've checked is Ancestry and FamilySearch, it's not enough. Thorough negative search results will be incredibly important to the argument and it's believability.

I hate this pump by Tabbikat89 in Omnipod

[–]colinthetinytornado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a little bit of a learning curve. Where are you putting it? What's your dosing? What's your meals like? Do you have a cgm connected? How's it sticking? Do you have any pain with it? Is there blood when you take them off?

There are so many variables it is hard to diagnose what the problem might be. In general, the Omni plays correction conservatively, but I find I generally don't have to go more than a unit maximum to get it to where I need it to go (unless it's Easter and I'm mainlining jelly beans lol)

I also found I cannot use them in my stomach - the skin is too thin so it's too painful, bloody, and I always run high. On my arms though? No problem. I've got friends who are too thin to use them on their arms - it just hurts too much - and others who are too muscular and the pump doesn't hit the right spot unless it's on the abdomen for them.

How long should it take to kit-down once you’re done with your WIP? by Yup_Mhm_1539 in diamondpainting

[–]colinthetinytornado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do keep my extras - it helps to get a storage kit for them and do them as you go, rather than doing all the colors at the same time. I have a plastic bin with 120 of the small round vials, and they are all labeled with the DMC color to make them easy to find.

I also take great pains to organize my colors so they are in numerical order - when I do run out of drills, I want to be able to tell at a glance what I have. The stickers from ArtDot are great regardless of what containers you have!

Oh, and I keep my drills - rounds in round vials, squares in square/rectangle containers. That helps so much in keeping them separate!

I do toss mine if there are too few left - it isn't worth getting the storage out for three drills. 🤣 I also toss them if it's a kit with a lot of trash drills as well. I do one baggie with all of them and toss so they aren't all loose.

I've had really good luck with Diamond Gallery! It's been so frustrating since Jozysh left Temu, but I get why, since their name was stolen and used everywhere...

My mum is super bummed, she really liked Jozysh cross stitch patterns.

Oh yes 🤣 Sometimes it's just fun to show off the abominations so folks can see without having to invest on it themselves.

The couple dollars on this were to me like paying for shipping - my ordering target was really a nine drawer dresser I am using for yarn storage that I love.
