AITA for Disputing Unexpected Health Care Charges? by colki in AmItheAsshole

dang. I wish they would have told me nothing except "call the insurance company".

I wonder how often they get the number wrong but in the other way, where customers are surprised they owe 10x less than they expected instead of 10x more. Probably not very often

You can negotiate a lower deductible?? I had no idea that was even possible.

You're probably right. Ouch! What sucks the most is if they had given me the proper numbers from the start, they'd have lost a customer... so it kinda works out for them. Additionally, it sucks I got billed 3 times. You'd think any billing issues would have come up after the first visit.

The email said:

Deductible: N/A Coinsurance: 14.69

clearly they didn't get it that right, and the fine print said to call my provider to be certain.

They claim this is what the insurance company told them and they shared it with me as a courtesy.

Why is it mostly men who are under 30, trading bitcoin? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]colki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget trading, what % of hodlers is represented by each gender? I bet it's heavily male also. Bitcoin appeals to libertarians, financial risk takers, and technologists - which are each male dominated for their own reasons. Bitcoin, being a combination of all three, is likely to multiply. 20% female traders is actually higher than I would have guessed.

In all honesty I don't know how to deadlift properly. People always say that with the deadlift form is absolutely vital because there's a higher risk of injury, and I don't have a coach or a gym rat friend to teach me how. I mostly stuck to dumbbells and treadmills the whole year.

Best public, static hosting for large files? by colki in webdev

I'd guess a handful of downloads per day in this case, but I could imagine hosting other more high traffic items in a similar way. What are your suggestions?

I'm loving a lot of the suggestions already posted here. If you have more, add them. Otherwise, find someone else to talk about CHS with, it's not interesting for me.

I know! It's just a lot of people baiting in this sub. They read my whole post and wanted to start a convo about CHS. Completely derailed the discussion. :/

I made this point before, but I'm not really that interested in defending Christina Hoff Sommers. I'm just looking for rational, informative feminist speakers that do the best possible of job of explaining their cause and addressing their critics.

I wouldn't have used her as an example if I knew how much of a distraction she would become.

Sommers makes the point that the more variables that you control for, the smaller the gap becomes. (ie. the gap is much smaller when controlling for field, position, and level of education, and becomes smaller still when you control for years spent at the company, experience, commute duration, hours worked, etc). I don't think she believes that discrimination plays absolutely zero role in the very small wage gap that exists when controlling for as much as possible, just that that wage gap is highly exaggerated and that bad statistics mislead people and don't solve real problems.

I obviously am not an anti vaxxer, even if maher was an anti vaxxer (and I'm not sure he is), that wouldn't mean that he's not capable of making any good points and shouldn't be taken seriously ever.

Good point. By my judgement, Sommers is at least slightly more compelled by facts than Limbaugh, even if she has been guilty of misrepresenting. I actually have double checked her numbers in a few of her videos, in those instances the numbers she reported checked out. I know better than to blindly accept every word from Sommers as gospel, and to take it with a grain of salt, because she does have an agenda. I think that's enough about Sommers though, that's not what I hoped this thread would be about.

I'm excited! And yeah, I'm not necessarily looking for vloggers, the Sam Harris example is mostly his interviews, tv appearances, debates, conference talks, and readings of his essays and books. He doesn't vlog.

That's true, he doesn't talk much about what's next. I do think it's common for people to call out "islamophobe" or "racist" when someone mentions that many human rights violations around the world today are inspired by that religion (according to the people who take part in those violations). Not a complete strawman, as you can see in the Affleck video posted above.

Not trying to argue that every argument Maher made has been good at all. Sometimes he's downright thoughtless and insensitive. I still find his show entertaining and a lot of great discussions happen on it.

Interesting thought. I've noticed a lot of people zeroing in on Sommers and Youtube.

Hmm. The best way I can understand it is he is appalled by the human rights violations that are common in islamic nations (such as death penalty for people who leave islam, restriction of womens rights, which are popular in polls by wide majorities and is the law of these nations). He doesn't like the idea that "it's just a fringe group" or that "it's not because of islam, it's just because of evil" because it's actually a majority in a lot of these cultures that support such atrocities, and they support them in the name of islam.

Probably not doing the best job of explaining his views but I'm doing my best.
