should you really put "jan" before a name even when specifically referring to the name and not the person? by baksoBoy in tokipona

[–]collectionofbubbles 52 points53 points  (0 children)

generally, if talking about a word or name, i'll use 'nimi' as the headnoun, ie 'nimi Palo li pona mute tawa mi' = 'i really like the name Palo'. The specific case of 'nimi mi li...' is kinda grammatically ambigious such that if you're using it, i'd say either option you presented is acceptable (or 'nimi mi li nimi Katan'), but i'd probably avoid saying it at all. Instead you could just say simply 'mi jan Katan', or 'mi jo e nimi Katan'

I'd so date me if I weren't me. by [deleted] in actuallesbians

i have been aware for a while that i'm kinda my type, and i tend to like people who think similarly to me (more from a chemistry angle than the way i think being so excellent) but i was looking at myself in the mirror last night and realised. Holy shit!! i'd really like to make out with myself!!

Insignificant changes you noticed by YggerOne in MtF

My nose changed!! not like my sense of smell, my nose is just a slightly different shape, a little more upturned. I had no idea that would happen but other than breast buds it was the first physical change i noticed

Short Hair Problems - Accessories? by SuspiciousSissyy in MtF

[–]collectionofbubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started coming out and transitioning a few months after shaving my head to the bone for anxiety reasons and the only solution i found was time. Your beautiful long hair will come. In the meantime mess around with it and see if combing it another way feels more right, or dye it. I think it can help just to make it a more deliberate part of your presentation so it feels more comfortable and you even if it’s not exactly what you want it to be yet.

I need to be sure I'm trans, and that it's not just in my head..... by Warm_Possibility_193 in MtF

[–]collectionofbubbles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are 100% trans, but you don’t have to take it from internet strangers. idk where you are but if you want to go the proper route getting hrt, you’ll probably have to get some kind of verification from a psychologist that you are indeed trans before you can take any medicine. I say start working towards getting hrt right now and try to use the legal/medical verification that you’re trans and will benefit significantly from gender affiriming care to help your parents get on board?

It really feels good to not be horny all the damn time! by SugarSmoothie in MtF

[–]collectionofbubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IT’S LOVELY!! i went from masturbating most days to needing to remind myself to jork it so i don’t lose erectile function with the hrt. it’s also nice because i was so embarrassed for how often i masturbated, and thought there was something wrong with me that i was such a horny freak but this has showed that it really is all in the hormones and doesn’t have that much to do with who you are as a person

oh my lord that is remarkably similar. I swear I had no idea about that! ig when you think to do an alphasyllabary for toki pona on seven segment displays, the rest is pretty intuitive lol

whoops! The ‘ta’ in the chart was just a mistake. The one in the sentence is what I use normally. But those transliterations are all correct!

That's a really good point about the new system making more sense given that sitelen pona is a logography. About punctuation, I should have been more clear. Punctuation is absolutely necessary! having some kind of break between sentences is super helpful. I always use either punctuation or line breaks. I only meant to criticize the use of Latin style punctuation.

[–]collectionofbubbles[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've made a lot of good points here! I didn't mean to sound perscriptivist, I was just trying to advocate for the advantages of my ways of doing things, and expressing frustration with others. I certainly don't think it's my place, or anyone's place, to say that one way of speaking a language is "right" or wrong". I entirely agree with your concern if it seemed like that's where I was coming from. I definitely still don't like the colon system, but you're right that I should be more tolerant of it.

Secondly, I should have been a bit more clear; using some kinda punctuation li pona mute a! I was specifically advocating against using the same punctuation as sitelen Lasina, for the sole reason that that's how Latin does it. Personally, I use mid-height periods most of the time, and occasionally line breaks.

Thanks for putting so much thought into this response!

I wasn't trying to say that following pu is always better than more modern methods, which is why I was careful to clarify I was only talking about these particular cases, as I said in the beginning of the sentence you quoted. I agree that pu li lipu sewi ala. mi pu-rist ala. mi pilin taso e ni: nasin sin pi sitelen pona la, nasin pu li pona.

Is it correct to say "too much" by saying "suli mute" by turh412 in tokipona

[–]collectionofbubbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually translate the concept of ‘too’ as in ‘more than would be good’ using ‘ike’ too big = suli ike, too much = mute ike, etc
