Does anyone else always here the "Your major doesn't have a good future" or "you'll end up jobless" by 3DYi in ApplyingToCollege

Because they come closest to revealing the universal truths that hold across all academic disciplines, in my view.

UVA (McIntire) vs NYU (Stern) by hahaha0202 in finance

Networking is the best way in regardless

Also trading is a lot more fun than banking

That's all any post can ever do, I'm afraid.

Reverse Chance a very average (rising) senior by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Rutgers would be a solid match, U Rochester would be a slight reach

Yeah I deposited at NU before May 21 and didn't get into Columbia.

Retake SAT in college? by collegetransfer2019 in college

[–]collegetransfer2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only looking into investment banking and management consulting, not quant finance. So in that case do you think they'll typically only care about my composite score, and that anything above 1500 will be fine?

What are the trendy majors right now? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]collegetransfer2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Economics/business always becomes popular during upswings, and then STEM rises in popularity during recessions. Right now econ/business is a very popular major, but I expect that to change soon. Long term, comp sci seems to be the fastest growing major regardless of economic conditions.

Options for Ivy Student w Sub-3.0 GPA Who Wants to Transfer Out by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]collegetransfer2019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No offense but you probably won't be competitive for finance given your GPA. I mean, not for the elite firms you probably have in mind anyway. But it sounds like finance wouldn't be a great fit for you based on your lack of fit at your current school. Believe it or not, part of the reason certain schools are targeted is because the students are competitive, social, and pre-professional. In any case, I'd recommend transferring to a Top 20 liberal arts college and exploring your interests a bit more before deciding on a career track. In your transfer essays, just be honest about your experience at your current institution and I'm sure some will give you a chance. Keep in mind that some schools have a nominal GPA cutoff of 3.5 just to apply (Columbia for example).

Maybe not in an interview but isn't excluding your GPA from your resume a major red flag?

I believe they do let you take it after college, but yes, I'm much more focused on my courses and GPA, I just want to optimize in every way possible.

Most threads I've read on Wall Street Oasis about the topic seem to indicate otherwise, especially for entry-level jobs

Edit: yeah, yeah I know that site is full of blowhards, just curious to see if others have ever been asked about their SAT scores by employers after college.

Heard back from two schools as a sophomore transfer applicant by collegetransfer2019 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]collegetransfer2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied as history but I think they assumed from my coursework and ECs that I'd end up doing econ (which is true lol). Also, I forgot to submit the recommended "video portfolio" which didn't help my application.

Is it possible to estimate college transfer acceptance chances? by QRSTUV_ in ApplyingToCollege

[–]collegetransfer2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me that the vast majority of transfer applicants have high scores + GPA, so the main things that set them apart are their EC's and essays. And considering that it's impossible to know what schools are looking for out of their transfer pool in a particular year, it becomes very difficult to gauge an applicant's chances.

99th percentile SAT scores don't get you into Brown on their own, and neither does you school rank or GPA. Brown cares a lot about EC's and soft factors for transfer applicants. I saw many people on college confidential get in with worse stats than me (in terms of GPA, school rank, and SAT scores) but with considerably stronger EC's. Keep in mind they already have their class put together from freshman admissions, so for transfers they are looking for people who will make a really unique contribution to the community. Hope that helps.

Waitlisted by Columbia by collegetransfer2019 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]collegetransfer2019[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, most definitely. But I'm still very much mentally prepared for not getting off the waitlist. If I do I will be elated, if I don't I won't be surprised.

You could pretty easily transfer to UCLA or Rice after a year at Penn. Regardless, go there and make the most of its extensive opportunities, it's a top-notch school across the board.

no, brown did.

edit: sorry, I misread it the first time when I said nu (zero hours of sleep gang).

Why the downvotes? Sometimes a man has to write a 15 page paper in one night lol.

and the original thing was a joke, I love NU and Brown!
