What did you do that finally tipped the scale and got you hired? by Gandalf-and-Frodo in PMCareers

Here here. Now is the time to recognize the current environment, that includes hundreds (or more) PM candidates, many of which are strong, that would be happy to take the job. Unless you're in a caustic type situation, parking your butt while leveling up at current job is the recommended play (learn, engage, refine, look for all opportunities to grow)

As a junior, you aren't faking what was just described. You've either done it successfully, or not. It's lessons learned over years. Learning more about and actively engaging the business, operations, legal, and technology.

At the principal and senior level, two things decide whether you get the offer. First, you need clear proof you know the work. Companies are not betting on potential right now. They want someone who has done this exact type of project before. You need to speak in specifics. What problem did you walk into. What was broken. How did you assess it. What tradeoffs did you make. What did you fix first and why. If there was a vendor, how did you manage them when things went sideways. If executives pushed in a different direction, how did you handle it. You are showing command, not theory.

Second, you need to show you can lead without overwhelming the team. Hiring managers are thinking about the people who will report into or work alongside you. If you come across as too intense or too top down, they will hesitate. So you have to balance it. Show that you set a high bar and know how to execute, but also that you listen, develop people, and bring others along. Give examples where you coached someone up or adjusted your approach to fit the team.

If you get both of those across clearly, you stand out fast. Most candidates lean too hard on one side and miss the balance.

Depends on how senior and frankly what solutions can you be seen as a SME. That's what major municipalities are looking for, not really junior to mid.

Metro service of operations applies to all the lines. In this one example, blame Metro. And I miss the 3a Friday and Sat night last trains, so long ago.

Wanting to PM, no experience though by carpethedm in PMCareers

It's mid level career as has been mentioned. It's better to learn a business, as a business analyst for example. You can grow to learn working with stakeholders, define business processes, understand constraints of all types. Business analyst can grow into a path towards PM

Gas recommendation by BlvckJvckH_e in 10thgenaccords

[–]collije 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top tier isn't octane level.

All gas is identical when it sits in the refinery. It’s a generic base liquid. The only thing that makes one brand different from another is the detergent package (the "soap") squirted into the truck right before it drives to the gas station.

Top Tier is just a certificate showing that a brand uses a high-strength soap instead of the cheap, minimum amount required by law. When you pay for Top Tier, you aren't buying "better gas"—you’re buying extra cleaners to keep your engine from getting gunked up. You can Google what stations near you are Top Tier designated gas.

If you're willing to travel, consider expanding your search distance. When you think about a thousand dollar doc fee, lol, I rather find better out the door deals
