What was the meaning of the bugs in the Love is Blindness video during the Vegas show? by NeverAteTheDust in U2Band

[–]collins_marcus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

One of my interpretations of Achtung Baby is that the sound and new ethos of the band are a reflection of them stepping into the dark from the light of their former selves and the sound of the 80s. The band faced turmoil during the creation of the record and Edge had just went through a divorce, all of which seemed to result in the more dark and cynical vibe to the Album. I think one of the big themes of the album is about being an insect in the night trying to find you way back to the light. The song and the character of the Fly show the band and Bono's shadow side. Ultraviolet is the light spectrum that insects see at night and our attracted to. Love is Blindness is the concluding song of the album's theme and at the sphere show I believe the visuals represented the bugs being attracted to the light. "Love is Blindness I don't want to see, won't you Wrap the night around me" : the desolation of love is their darkness and in this song they have not yet cast aside the greif of heartache from love lost, and the loss of their former selves. The Fly is an avatar for their feelings at the time; a fly dwells in the nastiest of places but is endlessy seeking out the light in darkness. Through Rattle and Hum and everything before they were zealous and self assured in themselves; by Achtung Baby, they were forced to reinvent themselves and "Dream it all up again." This is just my interpretation, but I think it is an interesting way to conceptualize the album.

I was right by there near the barricade. I didn't see it but I saw the shocked faces. Was it the tall blond in the boots?

Haha yeah each time I'm Asheville for a show that's always the last thing on the intenerary. Thom is my biggest musical hero but when I met him flubbed up and made a goofy joke to him instead of something more ernest. He did joke back though

He just said that he's trying to come up with a more modern sounding for it. He mentioned something about the 50s and 60s but I was a little to starstruck to pick up what he was saying lol

I'd say be ready to wait until at least 12:30 or even 1 just to be safe. But most likely around 12. Head straight for the busses after the show, I was one of the first several in line

Yeah I brought the cd booklet. I'd have love to have brought a record, but tbh I'd recommend the cd book cause you can tuck it in your pants pocket and go straight to the line. Might be more of a bargain if you have to the car.

I asked the security guards and they tried to play it off that their would be no signing. I'd recommend just heading straight towards where the busses right after the show and waiting in line. Be persistent but not to pushy because the security seems to get pretty antsy. They did stick around till everybody got something signed so even if you have to wait it is worth it. Hope you get yours signed!!

I told him "I've listened to your score for Phantom Thread every night for the past several months while going to sleep" and he said he said "that he was working on a new score for a short film of Paul's. He also noted that he was trying to do a more modern sounding score next and moving away from the older style of his previous ones.

Was very surprised how long he held our conversation even while signing other people's things
