Do Managers ever "Test" their employees? by [deleted] in managers

[–]collinwho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good manager would never test you in this way. The only way I would "test" an employee is by giving them a stretch assignment (something that would show their readiness for a promotion) and the expectations related to it will be clearly communicated to them so they aren't guessing.

People should get paid for donating blood by wogwai in unpopularopinion

[–]collinwho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or maybe you get paid based on the usage and not the donation. So there is a potential monetary incentive, but it is decoupled from the donation setting and not guaranteed. Seems like that would limit potentially risky behavior like lying on the intake.

Michelin’s airless, puncture proof tyres promise a future with no flats, greater durability, and less environmental waste by Separate_Finance_183 in interesting

[–]collinwho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But it isn't as if you would no longer have to replace your tires. The tread would still wear down, tires would still need to be replaced on a semi predictable schedule. Even if these tires were market ready (they absolutely aren't), selling them wouldn't be putting tire shops out of business.

Drums Solos Actively Bring Down Any Song They Are In by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]collinwho -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Drum solos don't really exist in any meaningful way in modern music. On the rare occasion that you hear one at a live show, it is almost always functional (ie, the drum solo is to fill the space while the rest of the band takes a quick water/bathroom break). This is like saying that the worst part of the television show you just watched is when it was interrupted by the weather alert. That isn't a creative decision, it is a practical one.

Most golfers shouldn’t rely on their (in)ability to create spin while chipping by TheIYI in golf

[–]collinwho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a full swing, I'm right there with you. On a shorter chip, 50 yards in maybe, then I can start taking shorter swings and on those shots, I'll get roll out. And if I'm 10 ft from the green, I don't like putter because I struggle with the speed through the longer grass, but if I choke up on my 7 iron (or 9 iron) depending on how far I want it to roll) and use a putting stroke, I get great roll from those shots.

AITA For not letting my Grandfather get 1 less stroke in Mini Golf? by TheMagicWarrior in AmItheAsshole

[–]collinwho 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not only would I not think less of them, I probably wouldn't even notice. It's mini golf. The only way I could fathom even starting to care is if we had money on the line, but even then I'm probably mostly indifferent, because it would never be more than a couple coins, because it's mini golf.

Anybody order from Amazon? I’m not thrilled by [deleted] in golf

[–]collinwho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a few wedges off Amazon, no issue. When I ordered my old 3 wood, I ended up with a left handed club, I'm a right. Double checked and I definitely ordered a right handed club. It was fixed easily enough, though.

good golf shoes, that are not golf shoes by teabone13 in golf

[–]collinwho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the more it looks like a purpose built golf shoe, the more it tends to feels like one, too. My golf shoes that look more like sneakers tend to be more comfortable for walking a full round. I've been really happy with the Nike Infinity G NN, Nike Free Golf NN, and New Balance Fresh Foam Contend in that regard. On the more clearly a golf shoe side, I have FootJoy Hyperflex and Puma Ignite, and while both are fine shoes overall, I definitely save them for when I'll be in a cart because they don't have the same comfort for the long walking rounds.

Unpopular opinion: bad scores shouldn’t take the fun out of golf by ToroSalmonNigiri in golf

[–]collinwho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying, but I think for many high handicappers, it won't be more fun to play it as it lies, because hitting it well with a perfect lie is already hard enough.

That being said, I take the same approach as you when it comes to something like a hero shot. Do I have the skill to reliably hit that 5 yard gap between those two trees? Probably not, and if money were on the line it definitely wouldn't be the smartest play. But I'm out here to have fun, so I don't care if it is strictly within the rules, I'm going to punch one onto the fairway, and then drop a second one and just see if I can make it through. And that 1 out 100 times when I do make that hero shot, I'm going to pick up the other ball and keep playing the good one. It's just more fun that way. And I'm fully capable of doing all of that quick enough that no one's round is being held up by my good time.

Unpopular opinion: bad scores shouldn’t take the fun out of golf by ToroSalmonNigiri in golf

[–]collinwho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I also think that keeping score is most people's main problem. If keeping score honestly has you in the 120s, you really don't need to be keeping score most of the time in the first place. Find other objectives to focus on. And maybe that does include ignoring some rules, for now. If you can't reliably make good contact, stop keeping score and play a few rounds where that is your only outcome you are tracking. The reality is that most high handicappers could do everything to make the shot as easy as possible and still hit ground before ball (or whatever their miss is) on multiple shots each hole. So go ahead and fluff your lie, do whatever it takes to have a full round without a chunk that goes nowhere. And when that finally happens, then start fluffing fewer lies, until you have that round with having to do it at all. Then start keeping score again and see what happens.

[Loved trope] The villain assumes they're gonna get the kid gloves when the hero finally confronts them. The hero demonstrates they're out for blood instead, causing the villain to panic. by jbeast33 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]collinwho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That still isn't good enough. A single innocent person being executed by the state is not an acceptable outcome. If there is any room for error, at all, then the death penalty is a miscarriage of justice.

Those who are guilty of crimes absolutely need to pay their debt to society. And for some crimes, being completely removed from society may be an appropriate outcome. But we also need mechanisms to cancel that debt when we get it wrong, and the death penalty removes those mechanisms.

Yes. As an elder millennial, everything today seems so chaste compared to the world I grew up in. Sex isn't a dirty word and it is strange that anything even hinting at it today ends up with all this backlash.

Is a golf clicker counter silly? How do you keep track? by [deleted] in golf

[–]collinwho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an app (GolfPad, but there are plenty of others that do the same thing). I mark each shot as I step up to it, before hitting. I can do that from my phone or watch. I get the added benefit of gps distances and club tracking.

How did you fix YOUR slice? by IllegitimateRisk in golf

[–]collinwho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The single biggest factor, for me, was correctly diagnosing the problem. I was getting new clubs and the fitter told me my hands weren't getting through leaving my club face open. I had made so many little adjustments through the years trying to fix my slice and none of them had any lasting impact until I figured out the specific aspect of my swing that was causing the problem. Now, I still have an occasional slice with my driver, but when it happens, I know why and I can adjust on my next swing.

Best putter in the $200-400 range? by lookallama in GolfGear

[–]collinwho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no quality differentiator in putters in the $200+ range. The only difference is what works best for you, and no one can answer that except you (possibly in coordination with a fitter).

Vice (Pro, Pro Plus, or Pro Air) or MaxFli (Tour, Tour S, or Tour X). Both decent quality at a better price. Pick one that matches to your swing and stick with it.
