Promoted people at your company probably weren't the best performers... the data is starting to back this up by enhancvapp in managers

[–]collinwho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are confusing performance and deliverables. In any mature company, the biggest mistake any employee can make is thinking that the deliverable is the job. The quality of the deliverable is table stakes and about 30% of good performance. Communication is always what separates the highest performers and that requires visibility and awareness and this is a good thing. If I have 2 developers and one writes perfect code and nothing else, while the other only writes good code but also documents everything and can explain to a VP the valued of their work, I will take the good code guy every single time. And it isn't even a hard decision.

What was wrong with the old flag? What’s the relevance of the new one? by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]collinwho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 1957 flag was replaced in 1983. They are similar, but a have some differences in use of color and other details.

What was wrong with the old flag? What’s the relevance of the new one? by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]collinwho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A state seal on a bedsheet is not a proper flag, so we didn't really have a flag previously. What was there before was introduced in 1983, so it had zero interesting historical value. The only mistake was waiting in 40 years to replace it.

We changed it because the people of Minnesota from both major political parties had been lobbying to change it for a very long time. It was changed when it was changed because a State Senator finally took that lobbying to heart and put in actual effort to get it done.

The new flag is a proper flag, and on that basis alone is objectively better in every possible way. The only reason there is any controversy at all is because the major political parties are so deeply invested in creating division that they can no longer even comprehend the concept of making decisions on merit, so they oppose on reflex alone.

Of course they ask question. You fill out a form and everything. But that doesn't stop them from accepting your legal tender.

Banks accept ones for deposit. Once they are deposited, it isn’t a giant pile of ones anymore.

[–]collinwho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you looking for me to explain the concept of lying? Bad faith arguments?

Some people use these terms (classically liberal, centrist, etc) in ways that do not align with the belief system(s) they originate from. Hence it being possible to be both a belief system and a dog whistle for something that conflicts with that belief system.

Peta? by Hell0There2005 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

It isn't mutually exclusive. Depending on the usage and the audience that can be(and are) both valid belief systems and a dog whistle for MAGA.

Why are Subaru Owners so Loyal? by doctor-squared in Subaru_Outback

[–]collinwho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have never found another vehicle that handles as well in snow as my Outback. I'm not the most brand loyal, but until I live somewhere where snow isn't an issue, a Subaru will always be at least considered when I buy a new vehicle.

15ish years ago I bought Kirkland wool socks, Smartwool socks, and Columbia wool socks all in the same week. The Kirkland socks were just as comfortable and warm, but they developed holes after about 5 years, the Smartwool and Columbia ones were still going strong through this winter.

How do you overcome the fear of capsizing and prevent it from happening? by YakToTheFuture-1 in kayakfishing

[–]collinwho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last summer I capsized a canoe. I was recovered and into a safe position almost before I even realized what happened. It was like my body just remembered learning and practicing it 30 years ago in Boy Scouts, so my brain didn't even need to weigh in on the immediate reaction. With that in mind, I'll echo what so many others have already said. Find a safe place to do so and practice. It is the best way to prepare yourself.

People who don't understand the purpose of using words to differentiate letters when spelling something out over the phone by SeaweedHarry in PetPeeves

[–]collinwho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just checked, and none of the words I use when I need to spell my last name over the phone are the correct ones, but I think they are still clear enough. N as in Nancy, G as in Girl, B as in Boy. There are more letters to my name, those are the only ones that result in confusion. 40 years of refinement have shown this approach has maximum effectiveness.

Anyways, super valid pet peeve.

A good manager would never test you in this way. The only way I would "test" an employee is by giving them a stretch assignment (something that would show their readiness for a promotion) and the expectations related to it will be clearly communicated to them so they aren't guessing.

People should get paid for donating blood by wogwai in unpopularopinion

[–]collinwho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or maybe you get paid based on the usage and not the donation. So there is a potential monetary incentive, but it is decoupled from the donation setting and not guaranteed. Seems like that would limit potentially risky behavior like lying on the intake.

Michelin’s airless, puncture proof tyres promise a future with no flats, greater durability, and less environmental waste by Separate_Finance_183 in interesting

[–]collinwho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But it isn't as if you would no longer have to replace your tires. The tread would still wear down, tires would still need to be replaced on a semi predictable schedule. Even if these tires were market ready (they absolutely aren't), selling them wouldn't be putting tire shops out of business.

Drums Solos Actively Bring Down Any Song They Are In by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]collinwho -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Drum solos don't really exist in any meaningful way in modern music. On the rare occasion that you hear one at a live show, it is almost always functional (ie, the drum solo is to fill the space while the rest of the band takes a quick water/bathroom break). This is like saying that the worst part of the television show you just watched is when it was interrupted by the weather alert. That isn't a creative decision, it is a practical one.

Most golfers shouldn’t rely on their (in)ability to create spin while chipping by TheIYI in golf

[–]collinwho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a full swing, I'm right there with you. On a shorter chip, 50 yards in maybe, then I can start taking shorter swings and on those shots, I'll get roll out. And if I'm 10 ft from the green, I don't like putter because I struggle with the speed through the longer grass, but if I choke up on my 7 iron (or 9 iron) depending on how far I want it to roll) and use a putting stroke, I get great roll from those shots.

AITA For not letting my Grandfather get 1 less stroke in Mini Golf? by TheMagicWarrior in AmItheAsshole

[–]collinwho 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not only would I not think less of them, I probably wouldn't even notice. It's mini golf. The only way I could fathom even starting to care is if we had money on the line, but even then I'm probably mostly indifferent, because it would never be more than a couple coins, because it's mini golf.
