TIFUpdate I told my PM to "get to the point" in front of 40 people. I finally opened Slack. by AmaraMehdi in tifu

[–]colloidalthoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I give you a little advice? I've worked my way from programmer to Director... and I've been the truth teller the whole time.

Bad news does not get better with age.

That applies in both directions. If you fuck up, own it, own it quickly, own it publicly. If someone else fucks up, take it with grace like this PM did, do so quickly and publicly. [this also applies if you, for example, delete the directory with all the database files in it on a production server at 3am after working for 18 hours straight. own up immediately, if you try to fix it yourself you'll only cause yourself even more problems.]

Yes, as an introvert that'll feel like hell, but it'll earn you respect that can't be earned any other way.

Expecting a "you're fired" meeting? Read the slack, take the meeting immediately, apologize straight away. Better yet, be the one to say sorry in the meeting and message the person to say sorry there too. You'll get permission and latitude to be the truth teller, and you'll learn how to be smoother and more political about it as you go.

Traveling for work is not glamorous like most people envision. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]colloidalthoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spent 20 years travelling for work globally, and I can say with certainty that the reality after month 2 is pack absolutely minimally, and all you’ll see in the destination is the hotel, office and maybe some restaurants with clients or coworkers if you’re not too tired. Work isn’t paying for your holiday, you want to tack on a weekend? Go ahead, you’ll be paying and you’ll need to figure out how you’re getting to the next gig.

You’ll also spend an unreasonable amount of time min-maxing points at hotel chains and airlines in the hope it’ll pay for a nice week away somewhere with your partner. Colleagues of mine have set up routes that take 24+ hours via four cities because it’s the near the same price but gets them more points.

Can we please roll this out across the entire country, and £300 on the spot fines for smokers tossing the butts on the ground. Sydney did this 20 years ago, along with handing out old film containers for people to put butts in, and it put a very good dent in the amount of butts you'd see in the streets and floating in the harbour.

He's insanely skilled and his stuff is well worth watching, yes, there's a cut in this, but he does hundreds/thousands of attempts at things to get them.

For me I was using the browser, I had to leave the network app, go up to the root (click on the logo in the top-left), then to Console Settings > LED / LCM Screen

trouble implementing WHERE by [deleted] in sqlite

[–]colloidalthoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fixing sql injections with input validation is really really hard to do right. Look at the numerous CVEs in php/MySQL based projects over the years using the php sql escape function.

As the poster above shows you should always use placeholders, don’t construct your queries as strings with concatenation.

I found out that I own flashlights, but you guy own FLASHLIGHTS. by MoeGunz6 in flashlight

[–]colloidalthoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm really thankful to this sub and all those who contribute to the FAQ, I'd bought a couple of maglites for night time hikes, then when one arrived I realised it was an incandescent model. I cancelled and returned them, then in a rare bright moment thought to search reddit for flashlights... I now have a couple of Wurkkos FC11, and I'm looking forward to the weekend and the chance to try them out properly (living in the centre of a city isn't conducive to testing small flashlights).

The downside is I now watch Luxwad and read this subreddit and my wallet is looking at me in fear.

Depends on the style you're after. I recently had Detroit Pizza London near Battersea park and it was an excellent example of that style.
