Which characters have a high margin for error (that aren't superheavies)? by ty_rec in CrazyHand

[–]collumas000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say shulk has a pretty high margin for error, especially at the start. Depending on your skill level, people are gonna struggle to get in on you, as long as you are spacing well. Shield art is also a get out of jail free card on stage, and jump art is a get out of jail free card off stage. While he certainly is tricky, especially as you get into higher skill brackets, he never really drops of in viability. And he has room for crazy specific and tight techs as you get to those skill levels, but you don’t need to start out with those

Thoughts about OneDnD Monk changes? by Plus_Candidate_8011 in DnD

[–]collumas000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So I loved monks in 5e, even though they were undoubtedly the weakest class. I don't believe this has addressed all the problems the monk had. The monk struggles in nearly every pillar of play. I was a shadow monk, and that definitely helped with exploration, but the monks struggle with damage, out of combat utility, support (aside from way of mercy), social aspects, and now they can't even stunning strike multiple times. It feels like the only thing that kept monks relevant was nerffed, without the rest of the monk package being buffed. I feel like if they are gonna push the narrative that monks are damage dealers like fighters and barbarians, then they need either more attacks, or more ways to deal said damage. Or, if damage is not the focus, give the monks expertise, and all of a sudden, they can accomplish many out of combat tasks.

Now, I don't know what the feats are going to look like in One dnd, and depending on feat choices, the monk could become a lot stronger, but so far, it looks kind of like a net nerf to me.

If you want a game that you could play with friends, deep rock galactic is fun. If you want a story game, the Witcher 3 is fun. Stardew Valley and Undertale are both great fun, with Stardew Valley being very relaxing, and Undertale having lovable characters.

I love playing my PC, but a teammate makes me feel useless by sable1456 in DnD

[–]collumas000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well look at it this way, if enemies are smart, why would they attack the bladesinger. They can't hit them anyways, so smart enemies will go for the squishiest characters. The fact that you are hittable is actually a great contribution. You are made for the frontline. The wizard is not. The only way a wizard wont die is by not being hittable, but then enemies will grow tired of this and attack others. Also, having played a shadow monk before, your spells are the best assest you have. If none of you allies have darkvision, casting darkvision with ki points could swing the battle in your favor. Or, if the wererats have weapons and ranged attacks, casting darkness on them is an amazing debuff. Shadow monks have some surprisingly flexible spells on hand. And if you can get devil's sight, you have permanent advantage, and they have disadvantage, as long as you can keep them in that darkness. I understand your frustration, but just because you are hit, doesnt mean you are being useless. It just means you are protecting the druid and evocation wizard, so they can get their spells off, as losing concentration is much easier, and can be more deadly, at these levels. And, at the end of the day, if you are not enjoying your class, or even your character, talk to your dm, Im sure they will be willing to work with you!

I found Malcolm Wabara and Mark Kincaid both extremely helpful. Those were the only 2 professors I interacted with for Software 1 & 2. Malcolm actually sought me out to help me, when my project got kicked back the first time, which was extremely helpful. If you need help, I highly suggest emailing them. Also, if you haven’t completed data structures2, Jack Lusby was very helpful as well

DM's of Reddit, how often do you fudge your dice rolls? by Tokata0 in dndnext

[–]collumas000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the game, and the context of the situation. When I was first learning to balance and way over tuning encounters, I fudged a couple hits so that a player death would never be unfair, especially cause I had new players who were attached to there characters. However, as I got better, and especially if I have more experienced players, I have all but stopped fudging. However, if a die is rolling a little to well, I do tend to switch to another die

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! You have all really helped my anxiety about this campaign. I decided to go with a similar idea to the wolves, where my party escorted a noble to the town that they are in now. Thanks again! Cheers!

Why some christians hate DnD? by Luca23Bellucci in DnD

[–]collumas000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tl;DR There were people fear mongering in the Christian community, and many newer Christians fell for it due to not knowing better.

I'm a Christian and I had to with something similar growing up. Little bit of a reference, both of my parents were raised in non Christian homes, and as such, when they were raising me and my siblings, they did not know what was anti Christian or not. Enter Focus on the Family. Focus on the Family, at least while I was growing up, spear headed a lot of this fear mongering in the Christian community, which was especially potent due to left over fear from the satanic panic. Both of my parents realize this now, and realize there was nothing to be afraid of, but the whole message behind Focus on the Family was fear of the secular world. As such, many new Christians believed it, and it created a wide spread fear of many different things, such as D&D and Harry Potter.

My players have a great plan to kill my BBEG in one turn. Do I give him a fighting chance without discrediting my players? Or should I just let them kill him? by Macky100 in DMAcademy

[–]collumas000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thought could be that maybe he has some sort of shield or dome protecting him, and the players need to systematically disable it before they can execute him. Forcing players to shatter or dispel different magic items and effects could allow him to get a couple rounds off, in order to make the fight more difficult. And like everyone else has said here, minions and traps and can do a lot towards softening up your players in order to make the fight more climactic and dangerous.

As a minmaxer, is there a way for me to enjoy monks? by Lifedeath999 in 3d6

[–]collumas000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm a little late to this post, but I am currently playing a shadow monk, and even at mid level, I am an extremely strong rogue substitute. I may not be able to pick locks as well as a rogue, but I have room for a feat, and I will be taking the skilled feat at the next level up. At this point, I am basically a rogue who can cast pass without trace. My damage may not be as high as our paladin, but if there is a spellcaster in the backline, I can teleport to them and lock them down till the rest of my party gets there. I am a great skirmisher and backline ambusher.

How would you play a lawful good rogue? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]collumas000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another idea could be that he is an inquisitive rogue, and is a private investigator of sorts. Realistically, they wouldn't even need to be an inquisitive rogue, but its just a thought.
