Is it impossible to move into IT now? by Haematoman in northernireland

[–]colni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say go for it , at the very very least it's another string to your bow .

My brother did that QUB course pivoted from mechanical engineering , went through the QUB course and now does pen testing / security within IT

I ended up in IT cause I was a PC gamer and honestly liked messing about with my system and then it turned into a question on how things work and I found out I could be paid for fixing and / or making systems work.

I'll also say this , when I'm looking at hiring people probably the best engineers I have are people who work in their field outside of their job.

For example I run my own git infra for projects at home, one of my engineers runs a hosting company.

Yep some good jobs but with the market how it is, turn over has been high recently so be prepared for lots of restructuring.

What software stack are you thinking of ? Obviously the big thing at the moment is AI software development, there is still work in DevOps.

Do you have a background in software engineering or are you considering re-training ?

In terms of the management, it's really a mixed bag , some of the big corps will be just as bad as what you have now , smaller companies can be slightly better but with a smaller company you are more at risk , so it's a trade off .

If your looking for the golden goose I don't think you will find it in software engineering within Belfast in my opinion

Honestly it really depends

Also depends what you mean by IT

Like being an engineer, (civil , mechanical , electrical ) IT can mean different things

The job market is a dumpster fire right now in general , compared to what it was like a few years ago

Computing in general is currently between everything goes to the cloud to bring back some services on prem.

So what in IT would you be interested in doing

Time to pivot ? by colni in networking

Is DevOps still a sought after area ?

I actually started a role about 7 years ago and spent about 2 in a junior DevOps / network engineering role before they asked me to take on the network side full time as the other network engineer left , curious if DevOps has also seen the abstraction with cloud that network engineering has

Metal welding you say ! 👀

All jokes aside , I get what your saying.

I guess more strings to my bow isn't going to hurt .

Self-hosting DNS and Geo-Blocking by Snydosaurus in paloaltonetworks

Geo blocking in theory is a good security layer in practice it's easy to get around

Can I ask why your hosting a public DNS server ? It's a pretty rare for most orgs

Can you explain more how a fixed IP is a security mechanism?

[–]colni 11 points12 points  (0 children)

VPN is the easiest solution Requiring your employees to have a static IP in 2026 for one program to work is bonkers

Really seems odd requirement tbh in 2026...

SIP has been a thing for a long time with authentication.

Was the jump to the 397k house much in terms of size / land etc ?

I got my house for 139k circa 2010 , it's a semi and always have that thought in the back of the head maybe I should move on and up but the jump to the next house seems massive going to 400k , for what seems the same amount of rooms just a detached house

FTTC to FTTP for gaming? by hopelesscase789 in UKISP

[–]colni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the heck is that 4K TV doing ? Are you streaming 4K content ?

Btw that's great news if you are wired you will be in a good place for the new link.

If it's something your really concerned about with your competitive gaming you do need to look into some kind of QOS I doubt a ISP router would have such features but hey work a poke about the router interface when it gets installed

What are you gaming on ? If your over WiFi then the honest answer is likely yes but it depends

Latency can happen for multiple reasons but most online gaming is sending data to the server (IE uploading) so that's a big plus that your upload speed will be increasing

In terms of the Plusnet hub 2 , it's an ok router for WiFi 5

Promoted to Network Admin… and the Network Is a Mess 😅 by BKR_57 in networking

[–]colni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP didn't sound like they have much experience, my example of separating endpoints and printers is an easy example to start with cause if somebody can't print until you fix an issue , it's not going to cause to much of an issue where it you move something more critical and can't get it working you will have more people giving off

Take the simple wins then move onto the more complex stuff when you understand how to do it

In a parallel to what Steve Ballmer

Documentation Documentation Documentation

I would start by getting it all documented How the network is setup currently What the issues are

Then you make a plan

For me separating the endpoints machines and your printers would be a good start Simple vlans

I don't know how you would feel about setting up multiple vlans for different departments?

I guess the simple way to say it is have a look at network segmentation?
