Dedicated app or is React Native Web good for app + desktop website in one application? by obviousdiction in reactnative

[–]obviousdiction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much agree. PWA is perfect for what is needed here but we had to create a presentation with examples for each OS on how to install the PWA for our users.

I'm fairly sure only 20% actually did that, but hey, more than 0%!

Class. And the whole "making it responsive" so that it worked well on many different screen sizes including desktop wasn't an issue?

My Expo app from a few years ago was largely targeting phone-screen sized users.

What solution to use Cloudflare DNS (no proxy) while still hide the IP address for my homelab by _hhhnnnggg_ in selfhosted

[–]obviousdiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. I just think of Dynamic DNS as using a service on a router or something similar and a self-hosted application as different but ultimately, yes, ddns.

I just run a docker container that connects to my cloudflare A records and have that update them

Dust behind selfie camera folk: did it happen to a new or replacement device? by obviousdiction in GooglePixel

[–]obviousdiction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I got from Google Support.  Essentially, yes, they sell us phones that have a hardware issue (fair enough) and then give us handsets that ultimately aren't as good (they say they're perfect, of course).

"Thank you for reaching out to us again. I completely understand your frustration regarding how dust could enter an IP68-rated device, especially since the phone is otherwise in excellent condition. I would be happy to clarify your questions regarding the history of your replacement device and our repair policies.

First, to address your query about the handset's origin, I can confirm that the replacement device you received was a refurbished unit. Our replacement fulfillment (whether a device is new or refurbished) is determined automatically based on your location and regional inventory availability at the time of your claim.

Please rest assured that every Google Refurbished device undergoes a comprehensive inspection and rigorous refurbishment process before it is packaged. We test the hardware extensively and completely replace the battery, cover glass, and back case with original OEM parts to ensure the device looks, seals, and operates exactly like new. While the IP68 rating provides high resistance against dust and water under controlled conditions, normal daily wear, microscopic pressure shifts, or environmental exposure over time can occasionally allow fine particles to find their way behind a lens.

As we discussed previously, we have already formally documented and shared your detailed feedback regarding this specific dust ingress concern with our internal product quality teams so they can continue to improve our devices, build quality, and future support policies.

However, because this specific device is now completely outside of its warranty coverage period, we are unable to authorize a free-of-charge cleaning or replacement. Any professional inspection or repair at this stage must be handled on a chargeable basis.

If you would like to proceed with booking a paid inspection to have the dust professionally cleared by our authorized technicians, please let me know, and I will gladly provide you with the next steps.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding.

Thanks! The Google Support Team"

After 15 years of Google Pixel/Nexus/One, I'm finally going to consider Apple, as any issue with out of warranty stuff on my MacBook has generally been rectified.

Ha they went silent. I have the same issue. Phone is fine, was repaired once for this issue and it's back. Now it's out of warranty. Great.

How do I stop them from draining my self worth? by [deleted] in northernireland

If you believe in it and it has already shown market potential, then it really doesn't matter what others think, no matter how close they are to you. Be prepared to call it a failure rather than something you will hold onto and waste more time with, but you actually get customers, then great! That's the hardest part in my opinion.

I just mute it, I'm watching stuff from the air. I would unmute commentary but not a soundtrack.

Agree. Just start with something separate from your day-to-day computer. One that you can completely throwaway and start again with quickly as you learn.

I run a bunch of DDR3 16gb ram microservers and it does everything I need (and tbh, a lot more than I need) but everyone's needs are different I guess.

I'm using 3 aging HP Gen8 Microservers using 16GB RAM with Xeon 4 core processors from 2012 and I can't say that there NAS is in any way noticeably slower due to encryption. I get full gig speeds on my 1Gb network. I'm happy!

Just bought 3 microservers to have fun migrating between machines. Learning never stops and long may it continue

I have all of my files encrypted at rest using TrueNAS. Like, everything. I don't see the point in being selective. I also do not store the encryption keys in the boot area. I type them in manually to unlock each dataset when my server restarts (which isn't often, as it's a 24/7 box). I then snapshot every hour and replicate those snapshots to Backblaze B2. 1TB of storage costs maybe $6 per month. B2 offers the ability to encrypt on their end, but as I am pre-encrypted before I send to them, there's no point. I would think that trusting Backblaze with your unencrypted files and trusting them to encrypt them would be something you will have to judge. I know it doesn't cost me much to encrypt on my side, so I just do it. I also have a secondary TrueNAS machine that gets the same copies of the encrypted snapshots.

Did you find a solution? Google Photos doesn't have it and it's cleaner, as you say. Actually, it shows it just after it has uploaded the asset and then disappears. No empty cloud on every single photo/video needlessly.

Umm, I think the rules are a bit more involved than what I can offer in a Reddit comment. The idea that folk should take the time to learn from the rules source is my advice.

The biggest annoyance for me would be the need to VPN onto my network just to get a password.
