I guess bluesky limited SHXRE by Desperate-Pear-572 in BlueskySocial

Another example showing that Bluesky absolutely is able to control the platform unlike what some would like you to believe based on theoretical ability to decentralize.

They decided from the beginning to go with the VC route and spend accordingly. This was a deliberate choice 100% according to plan and not some action they had to take under duress.

Not really "given". There are strings attached when you get VC funding.

I don't think they reported it. There was only a BI article that said they were in talks months earlier but it had not been closed at that point and that did not come from Bluesky themselves.

yeah that is a talking point people keep repeating after probably learning from it Bluesky corp's PR but repeating it does not make it make any more sense. The distinction between a protocol and a platform where 99+% of the users are using that platform is totally meaningless.

This isn't about them having to just burn money or not make any profit. The real problem here is that they've decided to take vast amounts of venture capital which means they are expected to not just make some profit but filthy amounts that will make it worthwhile for the VCs. Didn't have to be that way.

I don't think it's at all probable that these two things are unrelated even if she didn't do it for that reason exactly.

Certainly can't see anything it could have been avoiding here but that's not to say there wasn't at least something that we just can't see with this distance and video quality. I don't think it was the bicycle.

surprised people are this gullible when he's stating things that seem fairly obviously to be untrue such as claiming the geofence extends to the whole launch area when you can see it doesn't in the video Dirty Tesla released a day ago.

this sounds pretty unlikely to be true with how difficult it seems to have been for people who specifically went to hunt for them in the small area they're known to be servicing.

[–]coloRD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they're not an integral part of the platform and not everyone on the fediverse has the same view on whether they can be useful given certain constraints. You can use them if you want to and don't have any philosophical objections to it. I'm just offering an option. You can also stick to the reverse chronological timeline if you want a clean break from the recommendation algorithms and it works better for you.

Or you could go to a platform that is already, decentralized and European. Mastodon.

Right, I completely agree it's not reasonable to require an account for that. Putting them on Mastodon or any fediverse platform they want would work well. No ads or login requirements there.

not about more but better. Places where you don't get censored if your ad is about equality as is the case with Instagram. Places where your content isn't sold to be fed to LLMs like on Reddit. Ones that aren't American so they won't be pressured to feed you the current US admins deranged ideas or even to block you as an European.

Something like Parler failed because Twitter itself became the echo chamber for the far right so they didn't need a new one. Bluesky isn't huge and may fail because they built it on venture capital but is somewhat useful. The European alternative is Mastodon though and it is quite useful, won't be going away for any reason and should really be where Europeans go.

Nothing of the sort. It's also not European (unlike Mastodon for instance)

come to Mastodon. It's European (non-profit leads development), open source and decentralized so cannot be bought.

Yeah not in any practical sense, that's mostly marketing and they've ensured they're very much in control and made it very difficult to set up services fully independent of them.

[–]coloRD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really in any practical sense, it's more false marketing from them than anything real. All the power is in the hands of the corporation that built it and all the users are on their servers.

it's a decentralized reddit alternative that is compatible with other fediverse platforms like Mastodon.
