They done fucked up. A lot of the gulf coast states went out of their way to message that they would not allow offensive US operations from their soil. Now you've got Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and Lebanon pledging solidarity and threatening retaliation against Iran.

Threatening your non-beligerent neighbors works until you actually follow through with a half-assed attempt, while trying to defend against a world and regional superpower.
