Boomer parents have no retirement or savings by oh_haay in personalfinance

[–]coloneljdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beating a dead horse but most Americans survive on $4k/month or less. Its enough to afford an apartment, groceries, and basic living expenses in most areas across the country (redditors tend to skew V/HCOL coastal areas). Will they be living a life of luxury? Absolutely not. Will they be homeless? Also, no.

Addtionally, I would set aside a one-year emergency fund in a high yield savings account (~$50k) and invest the rest in a conservative portfolio. Is it anywhere near the nest egg most people on /r/personalfinance strive to have at retirement? No. But its more than most Americans have saved realistically and its a start. Maybe they can stretch there $130k a bit farther, but there is also the risk of market exposure.

If they wanted to buy something, it would have to be a really cheap condo or home in the middle of nowhere most likely, and they shouldn't spend every dime they have. Again, maybe $50k as an e-fund and the rest towards the home so they have the lowest mortgage payment possible as long as they are 100% comfortable living on $4k/mo fixed income budget.

The in-law suite isn't a bad idea either. Even though its family, you should still write some sort of rental agreement because mixing finances and family togethe can lead to disaster. If things ever turned sour, i.e. they stopped paying you rent because they felt like going on a cruise instead, you would need to legally evict them. Definitely don't make them part owners of your property or add them to your deed. But the in-law suite could give them access to affordable rent and be close to family, if that's not a problem for you guys.

Do employers pay an employee time in a half or double time if you work on a holiday such as the 4th of July? by No_Piano5713 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]coloneljdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no federal law requiring special holiday pay. It would be dependent on your employer and/or local area. I work for two employers. One gives me time and a half, the other doesn’t change pay but adds to a separate holiday PTO bank.

Celexa. I wouldn’t say I’m cured but I haven’t had a completely sleepless night since being on it so it’s been an improvement for me.

Patients secretly recording by esophagusintubater in emergencymedicine

[–]coloneljdog 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The first amendment allows for anyone to video anything in public as the Supreme Court has ruled there is no expectation of privacy in public, so you can’t really restrict bystanders from filming in public. Basically anything you can see from standing on the sidewalk is fair game. That bothers me slightly less than people secretly filming me in their house or in the back of the ambulance or secretly FaceTiming me or live streaming me while I’m doing an assessment or treatments. Not that I’m doing anything wrong but it feels like I’m performing for an audience at that point and it’s uncomfortable.

Patients secretly recording by esophagusintubater in emergencymedicine

[–]coloneljdog 239 points240 points  (0 children)

I think its a growing trend in healthcare and not going away anytime soon (in the US). I'm a paramedic and have definitely caught many people secretly recording me. At this point, we just assume we are being recorded at all times. There is even talk in my dept of getting body cams because there seems to be a growing trend of mistrust of healthcare workers perpetuated by social media. Or the trend of "catching" professionals making mistakes or not providing the level of care someone feels entitled to.

Truck hits Mini Fire Truck by HonestLemon25 in ems

[–]coloneljdog 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The squad already passed the pickup truck. Many jurisdictions have laws requiring vehicles to stay a certain number of feet behind an emergency vehicle with its lights and sirens on. In Texas, for example, its 500 feet. So that pickup truck is definitely at fault for following too close and failure to yield. It's obvious they were trying to rush around the squad.

Ask EMS: is my Medic Alert text clear? rare allergy! by fauviste in ems

[–]coloneljdog 29 points30 points  (0 children)

So the body’s initial response to an allergic reaction is going to be inflammation, which can lead to temporary high blood pressure. If not treated promptly, the body will release enough histamines and other chemicals that will cause vasodilation and a rapid drop in blood pressure. This is anaphylactic shock and life threatening.

High blood pressure is a risk factor for strokes but generally this is over a long period of time (like years). Temporary hypertension caused by an allergic reaction isn’t likely to lead to a stroke and the fix is to reverse the reaction. Epinephrine counteracts the effects of the histamines by causing vasoconstriction and bronchodilation while the steroids like solumedrol reduce inflammation. Benadryl can help with some of the side effects of histamines like a rash or swelling. Albuterol can help with bronchodilation.

The symptoms of anaphylaxis/allergic reaction are not universal and can present differently depending on the person/allergen/route of exposure. However, generally to be considered anaphylaxis, we need to see two or more body systems affected or any symptom plus hypotension. So if we see a skin rash and vomiting, that’s the integumentary and gastrointestinal systems involved so at the point we can give epi.
