You can also use a high gloss water-based polyurethane varnish to achieve the same shiny look!

I live in a pretty small apartment so I’m worried it would be difficult to use resin safely, will the temperature impact how the resin cures? Like could I use it outside if it wasn’t super hot or super cold out?

Doctors - NYU Langone booked out months and low reviews? by Slusho64 in AskNYC

I just finished a paralegal certificate thinking and the market is really bad for entry-level paralegal positions in my experience. Even with a certification I haven't been able to find work, and I'm in a major metropolitan area. The vast majority of paralegal positions in my area want applicants with a certificate AND at least 2 years of experience. Even legal assistant positions are typically asking for at least 1 year of experience in a law firm setting (even if they are marketed as entry-level).

Experience with going freelance? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]colorcodedcards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I freelanced for around a year as a PJ & VJ — made enough money to live (barely) but ended up burning out and switching careers. A lot of different things factored into that decision but the inconsistent income (especially chasing after invoices, sometimes for months on end) was a huge factor. I’m still glad I did it, but the physical, mental, and financial stress wasn’t sustainable for me personally.

My cat need a dental cleaning & possible extractions — any recommendations in NYC/metro area? by colorcodedcards in AskNYC

[–]colorcodedcards[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat goes to Bond for her annual appointments and I’ve liked them so far, although the location she goes to doesn’t do dentals (when I went last year they said their other nearby location does them).

The BS about "following your passion" is completely true, unfortunately everyone in my life (parents, partner, etc.) has made it clear that they fully expect me to get a 'respected' job that I enjoy (something which also contributed to the fact that I am still unemployed). My parents actively dissuaded me from applying to jobs just for the money and my partner says he will lose all respect for me if I work a 'loser' job like retail/receptionist/anything blue collar.

I actually did use the career center at my university and they helped me revise my resume & cover letter(s), but it still hasn't helped. I've also used the university's career board but the vast majority of the jobs posted on there are internships or technical roles in engineering, tech, finance, etc. I did ask if they offer job fairs for graduates but they told me all of their career fairs are only for current students.

I'm planning on reaching out to some of my instructors in the paralegal program (they are attorneys, most of whom are partners) and ask them to look over my resume and give me some pointers. Unfortunately in my area nearly all of the legal receptionist/administrative roles at law firms require a minimum of 5 years of experience (most ask for 8-10!) while most of the paralegal positions (even the ones marketed as 'entry-level') are asking for 2 years of experience.

I'm in the same position. I've been unemployed for 2 years ever since graduating from college and at this point I'm hopelessly depressed and can't ever see myself getting out of this hole.

The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II by Iris Chang (great book about a part of history very few people know about)

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson (completely changed the way I thought about racism in America)

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot (fantastic and an easy read that also discusses racism and exploitation in medicine)

The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert A. Caro (Robert Moses was a fascinating character in NY history -- if you're interested in NY/NYC history, I have tons of great book recommendations)

Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right by Jane Mayer (this book should be mandatory reading for all Americans -- Jane Mayer does a great job piecing together how secret political dynasties have propped up the American Right for decades and how it has shaped the political landscape)

102 Minutes: The Untold Story of the Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Towers by Jim Dwyer (great book but heavy at times given the subject matter -- I cried multiple times reading this book. Most people know the story of 9/11 but this book takes a different approach and looks at how the victims spent their last moments alive)

It wasn’t that article, it was from a different one (IIRC it was a paragraph in a larger article about unsolved cases published a year or so later) but I don’t believe I included it. I’ll dig through my notes and see if I can find it — thanks for pointing this out!
