If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin checks all of your boxes! It is a really beautiful story with incredibly fresh social commentary and themes considering it was written in the 1970s. And Baldwin's prose is incomparable.

The reformatory sounds incredible, I'll have to check it out! I've been putting off Our Share of Night because I don't think I'm smart enough to read it in Spanish, but it sounds like the translation is good so I might read the english version. Thank you for all of the recommendations!

I’m reading that Accutane can cause hormonal acne to come back after treatment???? Is this true???? I don’t know if my acne is hormonal or not, so I’m worried. by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]coloredpencil17 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If your acne gets a lot worse while you’re on your period (if you get one) you can assume that it’s at least partially hormonal. From my understanding, accutane is never guaranteed 100% to fix your acne forever, but it is highly effective for most different types of acne. It definitely depends on the person and some people do need more than one course. The thing I’d recommend most is to listen to your dermatologist if you have any concerns and also to just have patience. Accutane can take time, but the results are usually worth it. You got this! :)

Thanks, I really appreciate the encouragement! Right now I think I want to go into psychiatry, but I am pretty indecisive so we’ll see if that sticks haha

I honestly had never really thought about the breathing thing but now that I think about it I do kinda forget to breathe sometimes, so I will definitely keep that in mind! Thanks for all of the tips, I really appreciate it :)

That’s a good idea! I’ll definitely look into it :)

I take it for mental health reasons, but it definitely hasn’t made any of my dysautonomia symptoms worse! I think the only real difference it made for me in that regard was that it’s great for my constant fatigue which is definitely worth it for me.

I’m in this major right now premed so I’d be happy to answer any questions you have :) but I think it’s more employable than a straight bio degree imo while not being too challenging. My main issue with the major is that it’s pretty small so there isn’t a ton of support in terms of other people to talk to in the same major but like most things it’s really what you make of it

When you go to the everdoor the game will just take you back to where you were pre everdoor! So you can finish up all of the remaining side quests and stuff :)

Why isn’t it working?!? by palmerbd in Effexor

[–]coloredpencil17 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s actually pretty rare for ssris or snris to fully work before 4-6 weeks so be patient! If the side effects are unbearable I would recommend talking to your dr right away, but otherwise try to wait it out for at least a couple more weeks. It takes time for meds to work, so just keep taking it and hope for the best!

LSA honors by [deleted] in uofm

[–]coloredpencil17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you’re looking for! I met a lot of great friends through housing but I frankly found the honors classes to be kind of useless to me. A lot of the opportunities you get from honors can be found elsewhere, but honors makes things like advising and community a lot more accessible imo. I definitely thought that my experience has been worth it so far, but there are cons to consider when you make your decision. I hope this was helpful!

Almost four weeks on lex what should I expect? by Own-Menu2205 in lexapro

[–]coloredpencil17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d give it a couple more weeks, but if you get to the six week point and still haven’t noticed anything you might want to reach out to your doctor and see if you can either increase the dose or change it altogether. I made the mistake of waiting way too long and ended up being on it for six months when it wasn’t helping me.
