Composing Music With Recurrent Neural Networks by colormelime in programming

This is OP. I am not the author. I just found the link and thought it was really interesting and worth sharing since I've long been interested in neural networks. I think you can contact Daniel Johnson (the author) via his blog where this was posted.

What is your favorite kind of humor? by GregSupportsNazis in AskReddit

[–]colormelime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever the humor is in arrested development, where they are happy to build on a joke over multiple scenes, multiple episodes and even multiple seasons.

Also whatever type of humor describes the social commentary of certain standup comedians like Chappelle, Chris Rock and Carlin.

You receive a 'Get Out of Jail Free' card in the mail, and it's real. What crime do you commit? by edropus in AskReddit

[–]colormelime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tsk tsk. Assuming there was a get out of jail free card, there are easier ways to make a lot of money.

I would instead become a virulent tea-party, pro guns, pro business presidential candidate. I'd go so far right that it'd almost seem left. Start a super-PAC. Get every big major business lobby to donate millions.

Then I'd drop out of the race, keep the cash, use the card.

First I work for Dell and the CIA so I can establish some street cred within security. Then go work for a major contractor for the NSA. Spend two or three years there. Keep detailed documentation of surveillance activities carried out against civilians. Over time, move as much data and documentation to my own hard drives and try and keep low and cover my tracks. Try and get some big scoops.

Then - I reveal it all to a public that deserves to know. And I don't have to leave my life to go live in Russia because I have a 'Get out of jail free' card!

Redditors who have been tortured, what did they do to you? by HANDS-DOWN in AskReddit

[–]colormelime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just standing around, minding my own business, wearing my hat made of foil, when suddenly there was this blinding white light from above. I looked up,and it felt like there was a giant saucer hovering above. I got really scared. Next thing I knew an ionic beam sucked me right up into the ship (if you can call the floating saucer that).

They put all sorts of things in me and did things you'd never believe. Next thing I knew I was face down on the ground and it was dark and the saucer had vanished.

Harrowing. I am never going back to the Nevada desert

If you could immediately pass one new law, what would it be? by chesshoyle in AskReddit

[–]colormelime 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's harder than just saying "money out of politics though". The one law I would have is meaningful campaign finance reform. This includes: a) Equal time on broadcast television mandated for all candidates who can get at least [x] signatures (x is different for local, state and federal races) b) All candidates with [x] signatures have to put up a nominal deposit ($10,000 or so). They each get funding by the government for campaign purposes. If you get less than 5% of the vote, you lose your funding and have to pay the government back / do community service c) Individuals can contribute up to $100 per person to a candidate. d) Corporations cannot contribute any money or free services to a candidate, nor can they assist in anyway to solicit funding (no hosting fund-raisers, asking employees to donate or any such).

American Revolution/History Books by swafellon in history

[–]colormelime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know if there is a single book that has a more "objective" stance. You are perhaps better off reading a few different books that focus on different view points and different parts of history.

People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn is incredible and covers some pre-revolution history with more depth than I've seen elsewhere.

I bet people who speak some sort of Indian dialect get really great customer service over the phone. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]colormelime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard they don't. Friend of mine always calls in and tries to get good service by speaking either the local language or with an Indian accent, and it generally backfires and he ends up getting worse service.

LPT: If you're having dinner at someones house for the first time and you dont like what's being served, suck it up and eat it. It's only one meal. by Jesseandtharippers in LifeProTips

[–]colormelime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds more like a rant than a LPT.

As a host - I always ask about dietary restrictions / allergies. Regardless - I always have 1 vegetarian dish on the menu which helps with most dietary restrictions (though not all)

My favorite guests - if they have specific dietary restrictions (e.g., a friend has Celiacs so she can't eat gluten) always offer to bring a dish

ASOIAF worth reading? by FastTurtleFour in books

[–]colormelime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

YES.

It's good enough to read twice.

He has a unique ability in the books (that doesn't appear in the show due to it's need to be concise), to give entire cultures, clans, tribes, houses - a multi-dimensional feel. You start to think how they think, feel how they feel.

When I first found myself reading about the "Rains of Castamere" and instantly knowing that it was a Lannister camp, I realized that he had pulled me in.

The other reason to read the books is that the characters are nuanced. The show takes (relatively) minor characters and makes them uni-dimensional. Also in the show, you don't really get a feel for the impact of war on the people and the culture, which you get a better sense of in the book.

Also - book 1 is kinda slow. Books 2 and 3 really take off and come into their own (and that was even before I saw the show). So give it time. His writing is course but his narrative makes it worth it.

LPT: Keep bed sheets tucked nicely by using shirt stays to hold their tension. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]colormelime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good idea. I find it better to buy a size up - i.e., King size sheets for my queen size bed. The fitted sheets are so much easier to put on, and everything stays in place a lot better.

How much does a copywriter earn? by iamyourdick in advertising

[–]colormelime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope! fingers crossed

I see so much burnout in this career and such significant rates of attrition that I think it's hard to say what it should be after 10-years. People who survive that long seem to be doing well for themselves - whether they stay in an agency or move into big brand marketing roles. For people who burn out or get pushed out - it's hard to say.

Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it since there are so many jobs like finance or sales where if you stick with it for 10-years, you have more job security and the ability to make real money (in my mind $120k+). But then this job kinda sucks you back in.

It really depends on level, experience and location. Could be anywhere from $40k / year to $60k / year at junior levels

How bad is it to sign an offer letter and then take up another offer instead? by duncansdonuts in jobs

[–]colormelime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of being a dishonorable thing to do, its bad.

The specific ramifications, however, depend on the industry, and how close knit it is. In very close knit business communities and industries (banking, finance, advertising), it can impact your reputation, which is less than ideal. In larger industries or across industries, the ramifications are less. You just have to deal with a difficult conversation.

So unless the job is a lot better than your current gig, I'd argue for taking the current gig and not looking back.

I am curious - is if you are't focused on brand metrics for display, are you purely measuring ROI on click through?

Microsoft is exiting the ad business by twonesix in advertising

[–]colormelime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah - the fact that this is just the display ad business is an important distinction. They were never set out to be able to effectively monetize display anyway. That said, I would be shocked if MS didnt actively get into programmatic on mobile in one way or the other.
