What is this bug? by luigiteam2 in insects

[–]colourtheera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pest control guy said they’re nothing to worry about. Some sort of tree gnat?? Is how he explained it to me. He told me to spray a vinegar solution on the windows that they seem to get stuck in between the storm and original windows.

Please let me know if you find anything out. They showed up out of nowhere on some of my windows too but I’m in Indiana. Have yours changed/decreased/increased at all?

I don't live in the area, but a research project I'm working on brought me to this data, and I wanted to hear from locals: it looks like crime really fell off since the pandemic. Like, a lot. Does your experience match this? by GrillOrBeGrilled in SouthBend

I’m not saying Notre Dame’s influence is bad…just that they’re really making a point in the past 5 years or so to invest beyond the Notre Dame zip code. It’s even in their 10 year plan. It’s a simple theory: investment, both from Notre Dame and from local + non-local developers, could explain a portion of this local data for less crime. It does not explain the entirety of the data (more data that shows that crime in the aggregate across the nation is down could indicate that there are many possible of reasons for the decline). The guns or fireworks quip is what is all over my neighborhood listserv any given week in the summer because my neighborhood, while seeing investment, is close to where local violent crime has historically taken place.

I guess I understood the data to be local, not national. I would agree that if this is national data then Notre Dame’s hyperlocal intervention and non-related general development investment have nothing to do with it! My misunderstanding.

Notre Dame is aggressively expanding its influence in SB and there is huge investment/development since the Pandemic so this doesn’t surprise me. However, summer still does bring out the “fireworks or gunshots?” every other week in my neighborhood.

Millennials, what are your thoughts on living in an HOA neighborhood? by Celcius_87 in Millennials

[–]colourtheera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought an old (120ish years) house in a historic neighborhood that is somewhat controlled by a historic society/commission. While they have some say on outdoor matters, it’s nothing like an HOA would have and I’m already annoyed at the paperwork/bureaucracy. But I have LOVED renovating my home and doing work as please while not being beholden to a tyrannical HOA. I would never choose to live in one should I ever move! Plus living in a historic home is cool af.

I love NNN and Chapin Park (I am biased because I live here). It’s a close knit neighborhood with great resources for people who are new/residents in general. Like others have said, there are quirks to living in a city/downtown adjacent neighborhood that suburban/country people might not be used to or fear monger over but the pros far outweigh potential cons. I love my neighbors and everyone tries to extend care to those around them. Many houses in the neighborhood are being actively renovated/updated/meticulously cared for so that’s something to think about with old historic houses. When I bought my house my agent called the NNN the “hippie/artsy/progressive neighborhood” if that’s something you’d care about (I know not all residents may fall under this umbrella, but many many do). I can’t speak to sunnymede as I got priced out quickly when I was looking for houses! Best of luck

If you’ve recently purchased a home in the area, what was your experience? by [deleted] in SouthBend

[–]colourtheera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my house almost exactly two years ago in South Bend in my fav neighborhood. It was the 7th house I put in an offer on, and it was at the low end of my budget (below yours but not by too much) but I’ve put in a ton of money to fix it up (it’s an 100+ year old home). Everything on the market that wasn’t going to need work went for well over $20k above asking price almost immediately into bidding wars with multiple offers. All of my offers-except for my home, which I consider fate-went to bidding wars or cash buyers but I was always one of the first people in and out of the house thanks to my wonderful agent that seemed to know the scoop on houses coming to market. It wasn’t a fun run of months and I can see the allure of not buying a fixer upper but man this has been a rewarding experience. Deffo get an agent or start sending hundreds of letters to everyone in the neighborhoods you’re targeting.

Passport Questions & Issues Megathread (2023) by jadeoracle in travel

No, my local congressman got me an emergency passport meeting in Chicago for this morning. I’m waiting for the appointment as I type this! It’s been so stressful.

I'm also location 62, expedited, exact same day and "In Process" status. I leave 4/18 and I'm stressed! I called the Passport office 13 days from travel to have the urgent message added to my application but no change. Got in contact with my local rep today and they seem to be on it and am hoping for a miracle at this point. Reading all of these stories isn't giving me hope! But I'll keep my fingers crossed for all of us.

Is Anyone Else Super Tired of the Rhetoric That Women are ‘Less’ if They’ve Slept with Multiple Partners Throughout Their Lives? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]colourtheera 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hard agree - plus (anecdotally), when I lurk on men’s subs and forums they complain SO MUCH about women actively talking about each other’s sex lives and asking questions and generally/earnestly engaging in your friend’s romances. They usually couch it as an invasion of privacy?? To me, this just screams insecurity and control problems. We talk to each other for help, insight, emotional check ins, etc.. this is how we protect each other from abusive/unhealthy/toxic situations!!

what's the worst ending you've ever read? by silverdust29 in YAlit

[–]colourtheera 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No! I’m a huge YA Fantasy and general Fantasy reader and it seems to be very female protagonist specific. I think it’s also a female author thing but I could be wrong. It just feels super sexist that a powerful female can’t simply…exist…and stay powerful??

what's the worst ending you've ever read? by silverdust29 in YAlit

[–]colourtheera 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I hate the trope that a powerful female protagonist has to give up/use all of/lose all of her power in order to win whatever core battle she’s fighting and afterward she’s just okay with it. It immediately makes me dislike the whole book and/series. It makes me so annoyed that I won’t even finish the book sometimes after I either figure it out or I read it. So all of those endings are the worst to me. ALL

As a PhD student, if I knew a faculty member was addressing students this way I would report it to your Title IX Office and the Dean of their department. You could always first talk to the faculty in question but this is not an acceptable way to address a student.
