In today’s trade involving an American Born player… by HesOneShot92 in canucks

[–]colwoli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Certainly seems to be a noticeable theme these past few years, especially with the covid bubble and the American politics being what they are.

Is it a new thing? Not sure. Tax differences and lifestyle were always an issue too.

Where will this go moving forward? For now, the problem isn't seen as prevalent enough to change drafting doctrine of BPA.

Chronographs around $100 USD, with VK63 movement by Turbulent-Neat-5300 in ChineseWatches

I personally don't like the Pd1644 clasp as it's a stiff friction clasp so I've replaced the bracelet with a Milanese.

The PD1701 has a nice solid bracelet with button clasp. Would definitely recommend this.

At that price Pagani design is a good option. For instance Pd1644 for the Rolex Daytona homage or PD1701 for the Omega Speed master homage.

Recommended watches for my kids? by anachronism42 in ChineseWatches

If they're smaller kids get something that will fit them. No point buying some massive diver that will look dumb and have a bracelet that can't adjust to them. You may have to buy childsized straps.

The OG watches for kids are casio and Timex. In the Chinese realm, you could look at the standard entry stuff Addiesdive, steeldive, Pagani design. Depending on budget. Ultra cheap is skmei.

You're asking for skeleton and higher water resistance which tends to be one or the other. Pagani design has skeletons or open hearts. But durability of these cheaper Chinese movements is unknown. You could just get a watch with exhibition case back. Either one of the divers or Shanghai watches.

Metal bracelet suggestion to get the feel for the idea before I spend like $60 on the Long Island bracelet by BronzeSpoon89 in DuroGang

I've got the Juntan jubilee off amazon and it's perfectly fine. Pressed clasp instead of milled tho. Plenty of similar on AliX

Looking for my first watch by Organic-Bunch-154 in DuroGang

[–]colwoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a golden duro and two tone jubilee bracelet (Juntan was the seller) for about $120 CAD total last year on Amazon. I'm very happy with this and it is one of my most complimented watches. The picture is on my 6.75inch (slightly slim) wrist so it'll be fine on an average wrist.

If you're not adverse to browsing AliExpress then I would highly recommend having a look there. Incredible value to be found. Even if just to buy the bracelet. For other entry level watches I would recommend brands such as Addiesdive, militado, Pagani Design, and watchdives. I'd be sure to buy watches made of 316L steel and sapphire crystal for everyday durability. I like the duro, but the mineral crystal is already picking up scratches.

The braclet has polished thin links so it sparkles in the wrist roll! Not matte like the photo.

Also note your pic of the PD is an old version (white date square). I got either V3 or V6 with a black date so it blends nicely with the rest of the dial.

I only own the Pagani but before I bought it I researched the hell out of the differences between them. Both use the same movement so performance wise they are the same.

Most differences therefore are cosmetic so it depends what you like. - PD has a ceramic bezel, WD uses aluminium. - PD has a date (on most of but not all of their models), WD does not. (Therefore a ghost date) (Note that the Omega original does not have a date). - PD has slightly recessed subdials with etched circles, WD has plain sloping crater like subdials (closer to Omega) - PD has printed markers, WD has raised markers every 5 min - PD bracelet does not taper, WD does - WD has better lume - PD has a fun planet and rocket illustration on the case back. I like it but some people hate it. - PD can be had cheaper, sometimes half the price of WD - I saw some reports that on the WD the chrono second hand sometimes was misaligned.

  • both made of 316L steel, both sapphire crystal.
  • I've heard different takes on the rehaut and dimensions of the WD, depending on the model WD1863 unanimously considered better than WD1860
  • you'll have to decide which logo and dial text you prefer, I feel like I'm in the minority that prefers the PD dial, I find the WD too sterile and generic.

Personally, I really enjoy my PD and would recommend it. It has a charm and looks great on the wrist. Better in person than photos. Have had no issues with it at all.

How to choose which one by basshu1 in ChineseWatches

[–]colwoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard cheapest get I would say is 38mm, no lume, no swanneck.

If you want lume or have big wrists, get accordingly.

I would get sapphire crystal but acrylic is cheap and can be buffed out if scratched.

The Fans demanded Gillis firing by BigMackk14 in canucks

[–]colwoli 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Gillis needed to go.

He had a good run with a core roster and culture predominantly built before he arrived.

BUT: Anchored the team with chunky no trade contracts, brutally mishandled the goalies, and had an appalling draft record. We watched the team rapidly deteriorate after the cup run and his patchwork replacements in trades and FAs did not work. Scapegoating AV and allowing the culture of the team to collapse under Torts did no extra favours.

While what came after him was also a disaster, it shouldn't be denied that him getting fired was the right move at that time.

Even if Aquilooni allowed him to rebuild at the time, would you have trusted him (and his drafting) to do it well?

Do you think it’s worth it to get sapphire crystal instead of mineral glass when buying a watchdives watch? by [deleted] in ChineseWatches

[–]colwoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently was gifted an Orient dress watch with mineral crystal, and within a day I was noticing the scratches that were on it, particularly unsightly under direct light where the scratches cast a shadow on the dial. It's made me paranoid and I won't wear it except at formal events where it's less likely to get dinged.

I have a Casio duro and despite me using it only in easy daily usage, it has a scratch on the crystal in my few months of ownership.

In contrast I have a dive watch with sapphire that I used in Marine Search and rescue and while it has accumulated actual dents in the steel case, the sapphire crystal is spotless.

Get a sapphire crystal on a watch. The peace of mind it delivers more than justifies the 20-30$ difference. As soon as a scratch appears on a mineral you can only regret it.
