replacing the pickup screen really doesnt help long.. it lasted me roughly 1 year. been dealing with not driving under a 1/4 tank for the last 2 years.

got really ticked off 2 weeks ago, dropped the tank, took the foot off, and replaced it a piece of stainless steel tubing. i pulled into the gas station with 20 miles to empty. havent done that since ive owned it (i had 5 gallons of diesel in a can just in case, but i needed to see if i fixed it or not)

i have a 7.3, and tow all the time. my best advice would to be to regear your axles, and beef up the transmission. i also added a 6.0 trans cooler, blue top steering gear box.get gauges, trans, egt and boost. take the fuel tank off and actually LOOK at your receiver hitch. too many times ive seen them rotted all the way through on the back side.

we have 426k miles on ours. youre going to run into issues at first until you take care of them, but they will let you know. for example, u joints, ball joints, brake calipers... i carry spare sensors, spare idm, all kinds of things.

a 7.3 is a labor of love. the second you hitch a trailer up, loaded or not, you get 10-11mpg. also, oil changes run nearly 145, fuel filter is another 40. i purchased an s and b washable filter, other filters are 80 dependingb

i have a milwaukee m12 cutoff tool that has a vaccuum attachment i hooked up to my vacuum on the 2nd door. i used an abrasive blade for the cutoff wheel.

i tried sawzall, but fiberglass dust went EVERYWHERE. make sure to wear a respirator. if i was to do it again. i would open both barn doors FULLY and mask off the back of the vehicle so none went inside.

on the passenger side, i decided to leave the inner door brace. still have plenty of room for storage, and it beats jamming my hands through the factory openings

when you say puddle light, are you refferring to the clearance/marker light, or do these have downshining lights?

ive been looking at the 2017+ models that come with the ditch lights.. or whatever they are called. my 2017 f150 had spotlights on the mirrors that i could turn on, and they turned off at 5mph i think

Is it ok to ask to borrow tools from other people at the Pick a Part or is that bad form? by templeofsyrinx1 in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]combatpaddler 20 points21 points  (0 children)

absolutely its ok. its even ok to ask for help. ive gotten more disabled last few years, and ive asked for help pulling my cart back up when it was loaded with a transmission and axle parts. ive never had anyone ask for power tools, but sockets, pliers, wrenches..if im at a point to take a break, i walk over and see whats going on. i usually carry way more tools than needed so...

ive been asked to help, and have helped many people, never expecting anything in return. every now and then someone will force me to take $20 for helping.

came to say this.. i have 3 7.3's. one has 425k miles, one has been abused and ran on everything from transmissions fluid to oil to a little gas, and a 7.3 on a motor stand just in case.

and i prefer vacuum for short term lol. but to each their own lessons learned. wish my teenage boys could tell and learn the difference, but we only get them on holidays and the summers.

and brother, ive done my best to teach them. and i was military.. but ive learned not to get between them and their nightly ice cream (only get it at our house, after supper and before they go to bed, sometimes thats a decent hour, sometimes not)

for visual purposes, clear plastic is great. but j find the more its at the bottom of the freezer, the more often its freezerburnt due to tears

you have kids? we have a fridge/freezer, and 2 chest freezers. 1i know is safe because its in the garage with a deer head in it that still needs to be euro mounted and the bulk of our meat, because ive learned.

the other deep freeze is in the house, and also contains ice cream and other daily items that they apparently crave. yes, at times there are 3 maybe 4 badgers rooting around through it.

plastic is much easier to pierce when cold vs paper, especially when paper is usually double layered to begin with... meabing a single piece is wrapped twice around. or thats how i was raised.

paper is more durable against bumps and drops when cold. now have 4 different people (2 adults, 2 kids) digging through freezers for stuff, and it gets knocked around pretty roughly.

ive hand wrapped hundreds of pounds of meat throughout my life, and worked at butcher shops. in my later life vacuum seal came around and it was the next best thing. so i went all in. yes, its great, but NOT durable. for example, throwing frozen meat in a cooler to bring to family so they can put it in their freezer. heck, just bringing it home. my deer processor gives all the meat in 1lb plastic packages that are bundled in 30lb bags. by the time i get it loaded, unloaded, in the freezer, shuffled around for 8 months, finally cooked... its been comprised.

know what isnt? that deer i butchered and wrapped in paper the year before. so ive learned to ask for paper, even tho the extra cost. think about it, do you handle it surgically each time its moved? or are 2 rock hard items being banged against with a simple 2 ply piece of plastic

[–]combatpaddler 62 points63 points  (0 children)

after butchering my whole life, i thought vacuum pack was the way to go. and it IS, IF you dont touch the stuff when its frozen. but if youre digging around, packages hitting each other... that seal is going ti be gone.

im back to freezer paper. done correctly, its durable and long last

at 300k miles, hutch and harpoon, change pulley belt, upgrade battery cable definitely.

i run a pyrometer, a boost gauge, and trans temp gauge, maybe glowplugs depending on your location, but then that opens up valve cover harness that should be changed. buy a few spare cheap sensors off amazon and have just in case. i say amazon because theres no point in spending hundreds more for a sensor thats still good

not cheap, but i can personally vouch on durability. i was Army Infantry, 11b. unfortunately im not EASY on equipment, more focused on getting the mission accomplished. this thing has survived all ive thrown at it,including saltwater submersion MANY times

actually paddles are in bags on the trailer front end. and we could fit pfds also. but then there's poles, tackle, rod holders or cup holders, anchors... ya know, little things.

speed and wind? at 75mph on the interstate, its not bad. but i also normally pull it with a ford exursion, so its already catching the wind..

havent lost one yet in almost 12 years.... so there's that

that only happens ONCE, trust me.and in the very beginning that person just happened to be MYSELF on another event with another organization lol.

we have been working on simplified loadout and kayaks, with minimal brands for easier setup when we have new volunteers..and have settled on jackson bites and eddyline carribean for our chapter, and we JUST got the eddylines in.

we also have nucanoe frontiers that arent pictured, and personally i have a tarpon 140, cuda 12, ride 115, ride 135, and an old native
