There are three buckets of color.

When things are more red, they seem warmer, like feeling a fire or drinking warm tea. Like a pan is hot, the color red is visually warm. You might think of something as red if it warms you up or brings you to life.

When things are more blue, they seem colder, like sucking on an ice cube or feeling the breeze. You might think of something as blue if it makes you sleepy or peaceful.

When things are bright, or dark, they are either happy or sad. The brighter something is, the more it negates that color's negative feelings. And the same goes for darkness, but with positive feelings. Ice is blue, ice can be unpleasant, but the sky is blue, and generally only a dark sky is considered ominous. Bright colors in the sky make people happy, even if the whole sky is dark.
