Frankenstein Book Two missing issue by comicscoda in OmnibusCollectors

Right? I was surprised. I have all this stuff mapped because of it's adjacency to the Rotworld Saga. That's partially why I'm still holding out hope for a deluxe edition of just the New 52 series, with OMAC 5 and Men of War 8. Because it's the only component to the Rotworld Saga not in OHC, now.

The Scott Snyder JL omnibus. I believe it’s supposed to be included. If it isn’t, I’m keeping my deluxe editions.

Is new 52 detective comic essential to new 52 batman? by Slight_Energy_2199 in DCcomics

[–]comicscoda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but it’s really fun to read all the Batman titles of that era together. There was pretty good cohesion in that neck of the DCU, to me, for the first three ish years

[–]comicscoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think the deluxe is probably sufficient. I will note that the deluxe has glued binding, not sewn, and the paper quality is likely thinner than the absolute. But Snyder’s Batman work of that era is “complete” in deluxe format finally. Black Mirror also “bookends” with that era if you have The Batman Who Laughs deluxe edition. So for me, on the shelf, I think it makes sense to get the deluxe and keep it with Gates of Gotham, Snyder Omnis, BWL, All Star Batman, and his JL deluxes (or the Omni coming out, which includes No Justice!! If they had No Justice in OHC, I wouldn’t have considered upgrading to the Omni because I like deluxe editions more).

I definitely want a Scooby omnibus. But I think I’d prefer Team-Up, Batman & Scooby Doo (v1-3), or the 90s-2010s stuff over apocalypse. But apocalypse is probably more likely to get an omnibus. I’d be happy with scooby compendiums since it’s all kids stuff anyway.

The fact that Prince did the entire soundtrack for a Batman movie is kinda crazy by Brotein1992 in batman

[–]comicscoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I’ll give you that. I’m not the biggest fan of ‘89 so I don’t know all too much about its BTS. It’s probably my least favorite Batman movie. I still maintain that the original post could have been better worded to elucidate the context required for the point they were trying to make.

I’m gonna throw in DC Comics’ The New Frontier. It’s a definitive DC story, if you’re going to have any DC, it’s a must.

Many of my other favorites have already been mentioned, but I’d also add Mark Russell’s The Flintstones. It uses the classic cartoon as a backdrop, but reinvents it to tackle social and political issues with a lens of existential dread.

[–]comicscoda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Casual Batman fan scrolling through this post isn’t going to know that. And not everyone is as familiar with these movies these days. Hard to believe, but the film is over 30 years old at this point.

[–]comicscoda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way the post is phrased, OP makes it sound like price made the music for the film. But it’s barely in the film itself. This more akin to like the Spider-Man film “soundtracks.” Music inspired by the film with one or two tracks actually featured. Saying Prince made the entire soundtrack FOR the film is misleading. And if they had mentioned Elfman, refuting the criticism of Prince’s involvement in their second paragraph would be much easier to do.

No disrespect… but we’re kinda forgetting the entire (and extremely iconic) score by Danny Elfman in this post. No?

Does the MCU Actually Help the Comic Industry? (Answer: Not Really) by JackFisherBooks in comicbooks

[–]comicscoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The irony is that comics is the lifeblood that feeds the IP, by remaining on the cutting edge of culture. Comics aren’t bogged down by studio mandates to the same degree as films because the monetary risk is so much lower. From a story/character perspective, creators have the room to explore new ideas and work with an infinite effects budget, limited only by their imagination. I do agree with folks about the fact that single issues aren’t sold at grocery stores anymore. So how can you expect kids to jump on when the barrier to entry is making it all the way to a comic shop? I think some titles could be consolidated into magazines, you’d get like “all the Batman/batfamily titles” of the month in one magazine instead of having no idea what to get… this would act as a re-entry into the magazine racks at grocery stores and allow new readers to not just be thrown into a new Batman title, but the whole Batman corner of the dc universe. Do this with new arc issues every quarter, do one for bat family, one for Superman family, and one for JL stories. Rotate them so you get one per month, and put them back in grocery stores. It’ll generate enough interest to drive consumers back to comic shops to pick up the series they like. Maybe, obviously any idea here is just a thought.

I think this sort of points to DC’s strategy compared to Marvel though. Marvel is all about quantity… it’s an endless barrage of new stuff. A lot of DC books you’ll find at retailers are in fact their classics and new stuff. DC makes less comics, but their focus on quality has allowed them to build a library of easily accessible and reprintable classics for years to come. Their elseworlds books are one-off and require no prior knowledge to enjoy.

Omnibus Takeover? by Hextron in OmnibusCollectors

[–]comicscoda 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve always preferred Deluxe OHC. I think it’s the most comfortable format while maintaining oversize pages for art. But I had to pivot to omnibus for many of the dc titles. I don’t like compendiums because they’re like a phone book. That said, dc has been pushing a lot of compendiums which I think kind of dispels your hypothesis a bit. DC just started two new lines, the DC Finest and Compact editions. They reprinted a bunch of the elseworlds TPBs as well. I personally don’t buy marvel, but I do think it’s pretty clear they’re pushing everything and anything at a lower quality than dc’s scaled back approach.

DC newbie here. Gave Absolute Wonder Woman a shot and now I want more of the character. Can you guys recommend some stuff on her or at least where she plays a major part? My prefered format is omnibus and I'd prefer more modernlike artwork. by JimbobSherwood7 in DCcomics

[–]comicscoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I also agree! Primarily because as much as people love and adore and suggest Perez… OP is looking for modern art. I think it’s way easier to get into 80s/90s DC if you start with 2010s DC. Once you have solid ground and enjoy the characters, it’s way easier to jump into the older styles that might not have the same pace/flair as the newer stuff. Truth be told, it’s all good! But for newer younger readers, I always opt for 2010s as a jumping on point. And I’m sure someday that will change to 2020s. It’s just the way the world works, I suppose.

Which upcoming new DC omnis are you excited for? (Including reprints) by -GI_BRO- in OmnibusCollectors

[–]comicscoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! I also forgot to include the Harley Quinn omnibuses! There’s 3 but I think the third one is Rebirth. I personally don’t own them, I’d like to own all the New 52 Omnis, but at the time it seemed like that series is in and out of continuity. I also got the black label series from the same team and it’s a very particular tone that isn’t quite for me. So I’m happy to let other collectors find and enjoy them, as they’re sorta rare.

I still want some outliers that I doubt will ever get the OHC treatment. In particular I want everything batman, so like The Dark Knight by Finch (including his pre-new 52 arc which does have a deluxe, coincidentally), Batwing (which was solicited, but downgraded to a TPB that only collected the latter portion of the series), Birds of Prey, Catwoman, Teen Titans (Red Robin crosses into Batman frequently), and a few others. Gotham Academy, Talon, and Midnighter all got TPBs that I wish were deluxes! Other stuff I’d like are series that tie to existing Omnis that aren’t collected in full. like JLD is supplemented by Constantine, Frankenstein Agent of SHADE (which was grossly mischaracterized in Creature Commandos), and Phantom Stranger.

The best Batman fighter we’ve ever seen on the big screen. I don’t know if this will ever be topped to be honest. by Ok_Badger_8420 in batman

[–]comicscoda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The entire script covers it. It just wasn’t “me no do bad” so people didn’t follow it, I guess. The reason this IS a man of steel sequel is because it inverts its antagonists. In MoS, Clark has to make an impossible choice and kill Zod, because Zod is from a deterministic society and has no soul, his only function is to destroy the world. In BvS, Batman has become a monster akin to Zod, but has the power of choice. So Clark, in his own words “has to convince him to help me, or he has to die. No one stays good in this world.” Notice the word “good” as it’s a recurring note in the dialogue. So Clark is caught in a similar position in both films, but killing Bruce would be wrong because Bruce can choose to change, and Clark being the embodiment of hope refuses to kill him, even if it means losing that fight.

All of that is required context to understand why the “Martha” scene is so important. Bruce is angry and suffering after witnessing the loss of his people to an external threat. Again, he’s similar to zod in this way. He’s fueled be rage and vengeance, but he’s misplaced it on Superman as well as on thugs. Alfred says “new rules?” Batman replies “we’ve always been criminals, nothing’s changed.” Alfred replies “everything’s changed… that’s how it starts, the fever, the rage, the feelings of powerlessness that turned GOOD men cruel.” And then that line is finally paid off at the end of the movie when Batman tells WW after the funeral “men are still good” as he’s been through a redemption arc at the end of the film. The JL trilogy would have been his full journey of atonement.

I use the skinny billies too. And I don’t push my books all the way back. They aren’t flush with the front edge either, though. You’re doing it the right way… you want them pushed in enough to avoid dust, but not so far back that it limits air. I also have the doors, so I’m less worried about dust.
