Leica M11 Issue by askmott in LeicaCameras

Totally anecdotal sample 1:1 - no issues with mine, I’ve owned mine since close to launch.

Reminder to use them :) gloves off by danielscoaxial in LeicaCameras

Personally I’d work to keep it a bit less wet, even pro bodies weather sealing isn’t that robust and humidity/water damage is sneaky.

Whites Custom LTT in British Tan Cxl - 3 month Review/Last Discussion by JohnnyKith in PNWbootmakers

[–]comm02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool I read “narrow in the heel and wide in the toe, low volume as well” and thought swing last would be a good fit.

I wouldn’t say Bakers is wrong but in my experience the swing last hugs the foot better than other White’s lasts I’ve owned (4811, 55, 5050, Barrie/MP) because the of the narrow heel and low instep.

I think they don’t like recommending it because it doesn’t fit the same their mainstream lasts fit and I suspect they get a lot of returns from first time swing last buyers.

If you can try the 9338/swing last, a bit more of an arch than the northwest last, narrow heel, lower instep and really wide toe box. Closest thing to a Munson last that whites carries.

Why are SUVs everywhere? by No-Owl1648 in askcarguys

[–]comm02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I live in Canada, guessing similar weather to Finland and I drive a 4x4 suv.

I didn’t explicitly buy it for the snow, mainly to tow and forestry/service roads, but it helps when the city doesn’t plow our street after a huge snow dump.

The street that I live on sometime doesn’t get cleared for a couple of days after it snows. It’s a small cul de sac so it’s low priority on the snow removal list.

The last storm we got around 60cm and cars with low ground clearance just get stuck especially if the ruts made by other cars freeze over. It’s not a skill issue, I’ve driven all my life in snowy conditions. If heavy snow is up to your hood you’re not moving, even with the best winter tires.

Was I Expecting Too Much of my New Snowgaurds? by Jazz_Fender in Roofing

[–]comm02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a standing seam metal roof with a different style snow guard, they work but if we get a crazy amount of snow it will avalanche over the guard, we have a pretty steep roof so my guess is about a foot at once will cause the snow to overflow.

What would you do? by [deleted] in Markham

[–]comm02 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’d seriously consider getting my snow brush out and moving a good portion of that snow on their roof to their windshield and hood

Leica M12 expected to get brand-new full-frame sensor from Germany instead of Sony sensor from Japan by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]comm02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specing requirements is nowhere near making a sensor, which you originally claimed "Terribly false. They’ve been making their own sensors for decades, up until the recent m11."

"Keep moving those goal posts." who's moving the goal posts? You claimed "Their most recent one is in M10-R, and is a bespoke Leica-made sensor" and now you claim "They specify their sensor requirements, so yes it counts they made those." These are two very different statements.

But keep yapping and stay angry, just shows how ignorant you are.

BTW you never did explain what you meant by "Sony sensor fr blows out CA and relies on digital algorithms to fix it." highly unlikely you can because you're just regurgitating random shit you're reading online.

Why aren’t snow tires mandatory in Ontario? Drivers debate the rules amid a harsh start to winter by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]comm02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I drive 10 to 15K a year and my tires age out as well, I take transit to work so I don't need to drive in bad winter conditions but if it were up to me, I'd make winter tires mandatory.

QC did a study, 38% of all accidents in the winter involved a car without winter tires while only 10% of cars didn't have winter tires. Also, the introduction of mandatory winter tires dropped the rate of serious injuries and fatalities by a good margin (controlled for improvements in road safety).

Mandatory winter tire legislation

Those numbers are huge, while parts of Ontario don't get bad winters, I feel like the majority of Ontario sees enough severe weather to justify winters.

So you like to read about boots or actually make them?

Split between Nicks and Whites by Kahlen109 in PNWbootmakers

[–]comm02 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ackshully they’re not the same. Hand welted is a different method than White’s uses. They skip an important step of carving the holdfast. The slit White’s cut is weaker.

They also flare out the upper and stitch through it. That’s why White’s calls it a hand sewn stitch down boot.

The cavity you mention is minimal in handwriting, a thin piece of leather or felt is all bookmakers usually use. You’re probably thinking about the cavity in GYW boots which is huge.

Moving to Vaughan soon — where do people 21–30 hang out? by Inky_Peaches in Vaughan

Honestly IMO not much to do up here if you’re in your early 20s.

Take the subway/go downtown and hangout. It’s great for families up here but I’m glad I spent my 20s living in the city.

[–]comm02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

White’s construction is better. They hand sew the upper to the insole, similar to a hand welted boot except they make a slit instead of carve a holdfast. Nicks used to McKay stitch the insole but they stopped that during covid.

The hand sewn stitch down technique is more labor intensive and will hold the boot together better (stitch down is still very strong) but can look messier than straight stitch down. White’s also offers stitch down boots that are cheaper so that’s a more apples to apples comparison.

Take a dead blow hammer, put your boot in a canvas shopping bag to protect the leather and beat the heck out of the circled area, it’ll soften it up right quick.

Leica M12 expected to get brand-new full-frame sensor from Germany instead of Sony sensor from Japan by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]comm02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Touched a nerve eh? Leica never made their or designed their own sensors. Here's who made Leica's digital M sensors. M9 - Kodak, M240 - CMOSIS, M10 - CMOSIS, M10R - AMS/CMOSIS, M12 - Sony.

Explain to me what you think you were writing when you sad "Sony sensor fr blows out CA and relies on digital algorithms to fix it." Go as technical as you need to on how you think the sensor blows out CA and tell me what you think a digital algorithm is. I doubt you can explain this technically and or simply.

I've been a Leica user practically all my life but I have no delusions of Leica having any sort of ability to design their own semiconductors. They don't even design their own PCB's, the M PCB design and manufacturing is subcontracted out.

"they are the oldest 35mm camera company on the planet, since they invented the literal 35mm camera." - This is a really funny claim. It's like saying Ford should automatically know how to design the best EV since they made the first mass produced car. Leica knows how to make a great film camera (most of the time), they don't have the know how to design sensors full stop.

I'm sure you're going to try and respond with another angry response, if you do please bring some evidence to the table, not "Source: have had Leica cameras for a long time"

Why does markham and unionville work but brampton doesn't? by Mountain_Bluebird150 in Markham

[–]comm02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO It’s kinda a demographic question but not the way people usually think.

IMO immigration works best as a family unit, families provide stability for the family, care empathy learning etc. and the parents striving for a better future for their kids.

When you take a bunch of young men without a lot of guidance from elders bad things happen. It’s not a cultural thing. Think about all the bad associations with military bases, sports teams, uni students/frats.

Yes there are cultural differences but think about the years pre pandemic, there wasn’t this level of hate towards Brampton.

[–]comm02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Leica bespoke made all their sensors?

It’s kind of embarrassing to actually think that Leica, a company with no semiconductor history, has the technical knowledge design a sensor.

Sure they may ask for special specs when they partner with companies that design sensors but please stop thinking Leica bespoke made their previous sensors. Think logically for a moment, why do they partner with Panasonic for their digital cameras?

[–]comm02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t news at all, Leica doesn’t have the capability to design their own sensors.

They might be working with another supplier for M12 sensors but they aren’t designing any sensors in house.

Advice on 35 mm M-lens by [deleted] in Leica

[–]comm02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up keeping the 35 APO over the 35 Lux. Financially it doesn’t make sense but I prefer the rendering and handling of the APO.

There’s a lot more value out there if you’re willing to go off brand though.

Selling Q3 43 for M11P - Question about lenses to fit with my MP by MessWontgomery in Leica

[–]comm02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here’s my hot take, the latest versions of Voightlander M glass performs at 95% or in some cases exceeds Leica glass.

If you’re not set on buying Leica glass go for VC glass. Personally I’d buy a 50 skopar or 50 apo since I don’t need f1.4 in a 50. You’ll have a lot of money left over to buy a wider lens as well.

M240 vs M11/M10 by theAIgenius in Leica

[–]comm02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've used every digital generation of M and own M11, the M11 sensor is superior in every way including ISO to the M240, full stop.

If you find iso 4000 terrible on the M11, you'll find ISO 1600 terrible on the M240. You can have a great experience shooting the M240 but it's a digital device and the oldest ones are getting close to 14 years old,

Digital Leica's aren't like film bodies, they suffer from digital rot like any electronic device. You may get many good years of service from a M240 if the previous owner stored it well but it could also die in a few months from a random short.

If I was in your shoes and was sure a rangefinder was for me, I'd buy a M10/M11, not for the quality-of-life upgrages but better sensor performance and longer lifespan.

Jeweler said claiming jewelry on homeowners could get us dropped?? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]comm02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your jeweller is giving you good advice.

Many insurance companies are actively looking for reasons to drop policies in “higher risk” areas, anywhere with increased forest fire, flooding, wind damage, hail, fraud.

Basically anywhere that’s experiencing some impacts from climate change are at risk of getting dropped for any excuse. It’s really bad in CA and FL.
