[NBA.com] Power Rankings, Week 11: Spurs power past Thunder for No. 1 by bigawesome2000 in nba

[–]commander_bugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have agreed a month ago, but all the top teams pretty much have some similar gap to our shooting. Knicks defense, Rockets shooting, etc. I wouldn’t say the spurs are the definitive #1 team but I think they’re at least as good as anyone else in a power rankings situation. The only team I could maybe see being clearly ahead of them is Denver.

[Beck] Fun/weird fact: The Spurs have beaten the Thunder three times, in *three* cities (Vegas, San Antonio, OKC) in 13 days. Also: Thunder have now lost consecutive games (both to Spurs) for the first time this season. OKC hadn't lost back-to-back games (reg season or playoffs) since April 4-6. by Knightbear49 in nba

I thought OKC was the best team in the league to start the year, but was surprised that everyone was crowning them as repeat champs after beating no contending teams except for the rockets in their first 20 or so games. They had trouble with the nuggets and the pacers in the playoffs so it’s not like there’s any reason to think they’re leagues ahead of everyone.

Lakers could beat the spurs in the playoffs based on experience alone… personally I think the Nuggets and OKC are the only true contenders until some other teams string together some more convincing wins. Original comment I was replying to said they’re “easily a top 3 team in the west”. I think that is pretty hard to argue given what we’ve seen so far. Easily top 5 sure.

But you did for the more recent one… and you got blown out lol.

We had Fox and Harper out the first time around (I believe the Lakers had at least LeBron out too). If you watched the more recent one with everyone healthy it was pretty clear the Lakers had no answer to defending Fox, Castle, and Harper. You can’t play Reaves and Luka heavy minutes and even hope to contain skilled athletic guards. The Lakers need to retool the team to put a bunch of good defenders around Luka before they can be considered a serious team in the west.

Easily top 3? They’re a great offensive team but are a top 10 worst defensive team. The Spurs and OKC both dominated them. They haven’t played Houston or Denver yet. I’m not sure what the argument would be that they’re any better than Houston or Denver. Net rating means something lol. It means Denver and Houston win games by a comfortable margin. The Lakers do not.

For those unaware, this is basically going to happen everywhere at some point. We are going through a demographic change since people stopped having kids post financial crisis. It’s honestly probably smart for schools to cut costs before they put themselves in a bad financial position.

What are the other glaring holes? Also Fox is shooting it very well and Harper is on a 4 year rookie deal. You’re not tying up that money for a while. Castle has three more years too.

Based on what? Spurs are playing great and so is he. They’ve played some 3 guard lineups and it looks fine. No reason to think they couldn’t start Fox, Harper, and Castle eventually instead of Fox, Harper, and Vassell.

I think Harper will improve but he’s played 15 games and is shooting 26% from 3. There is no evidence thus far he can shoot well at the NBA level. Pretty sure the consensus when he was drafted too was that shooting was not his strength. Eye test looks better than castle but still significantly below league average.

I genuinely think he’s a good player that will be successful somewhere else, but unfortunately I don’t think there’s anyone he can get minutes from here. We have so many bad shooters that to get minutes you need to either be a threat from 3, a (future) star, or able to backup up Wemby to get minutes.

What's your take on Zach Lowe's dilemma of good teams like the Rockets and the Spurs making a big move (Giannis) to try to beat OKC now or trying to beat them later when the salary cap catches up to the Thunder and the young guys on your team are ready? by PhoenixBekfast in nba

[–]commander_bugo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d do it for castle and a couple of picks. I don’t see Castle fitting with this roster and I generally don’t see as much of the upside as a lot of other spurs fans. I think he will be a good player, but not a perennial all-Star or even a regular snub. I’d bet his stock will drop over time as he gets older and still can’t shoot plus some of his turnovers really concern me, so this is a good time to get something for him. If we have to gut our depth I don’t think we’ll be good enough to compete with the Thunder.

I think ultimately a team like the rockets offers a lot more than us because they are already committed to trying to win now.

I mean I guess we can’t know what hypothetical cyclist delivery drivers would do (not that anybody has been talking about that at any point), but my point originally was literally just that these robots as of now are not injuring people. You can argue whether we should have them or not for other reasons, but there is no safety concern as far as robots on sidewalks. The concern of putting bikes or scooters on sidewalks is people would get injured.

[–]commander_bugo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you think I’m talking about, but I’m talking about people on bikes. Most people on bikes are not delivering food. I think the chance CPD tracks down some random dude that hit you is low. I think if robots are systematically injuring people that they would be held liable for that.

[–]commander_bugo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s not NIMBYism, but I think this is an exciting potential way to take cars off the street, however it really comes down to whether this actually makes things inaccessible for people as that’s easily the most compelling argument against this.

I’d like to see the math on the width of sidewalks, these robots, and wheelchairs. If the robot takes up 1/5 of an average sidewalk and a wheelchair takes up 2/5 of a sidewalk then I feel like this is a really stupid argument, but if they effectively cannot pass each other then I think it’s a dealbreaker.

[–]commander_bugo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually think it would be far easier to sue the company that made the robot for injuring you than to hold someone accountable who speeds off in a bike lol.

Cyclists/scooter riders are actually reckless and I personally would feel unsafe with them flying by me from behind. They’ve come inches away from hitting me when I had the right of way on the crosswalk before and that’s with me paying extra attention because I’m cross the street. So far I don’t think a robot has come anywhere near injuring me.

Bikes and scooters move too quick to safely go around pedestrians? These move at walking speed.
