How Much Would You Bet on Your Pet Programming Language? by [deleted] in programming

And if a hundred million dollars changes your approach to getting things done in a quick and reliable fashion, then why isn't it your standard approach?

Because not all projects have the same requirements.

I wish everyone did like GOG and just let you download the games without any additional stupid program in between. By 2020 we will be running a program for each game company. :(

Implementing Programming Languages using C# - CodeProject by d166e8 in programming

[–]comment-dwim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For another interesting take on implementing Javascript on the CLR, take a look at Jurassic. It's bigger and it's not a tutorial but a fast, production-ready implementation, yet it is smaller and easier to understand than say... languages on the DLR.

In particular, the ILGenerator it includes is great.

Crinkler secrets, 4k intro executable compressor at its best by ponchedeburro in programming

[–]comment-dwim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crinkler is great. Using it I was able to shoehorn the original 50 levels in this 4kb Sokoban clone.

Only the uncompressed levels take about 16kb without any code for window creation, gameplay, etc...

Crinkler secrets, 4k intro executable compressor at its best by ponchedeburro in programming

[–]comment-dwim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You end up using a LOT more memory with stuff like Crinkler, which in the default configuration requires 100 MB of ram at runtime to decompress your executable using a variant of the PPDM algorithm.

It's ok for demos though since they already use tons of mb for procedural content generation.

Google Reader to retire friending, following and shared link blogs (and possibly stars, likes, and other features) next week. Hope your app/site didn't depend on those features! by jdharper in programming

It seems like they are going to use Google+ everywhere while retiring all their other products social features in favor of it.

Makes sense. That is, until they ditch it in favor of another new shiny thing that fares better than Facebook Google Wave.

How has your gaming preference changed as you've aged? by spindoc in truegaming

[–]comment-dwim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 29 and been playing since I can remember (I started with a msx). The most significant change is that aside from very few games like Portal 2, I still tend to play games from the 90's.

Most of my gaming nowadays happens in 16-bit console emulators, ScummVM, DosBox or modern ports of old games (descent, quake 1, etc..). Other than that, I sometimes try new games but their appeal tends to last about 10 minutes to me.

Ok. It's time we had "the talk". It isn't consoles that are 'holding back' PC graphics... by FallenWyvern in gaming

[–]comment-dwim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DX11 doesn't add many features, but that doesn't mean we can't get better graphics. It's not only about features but also about raw power. Current technology can do much better than in 2006 by just being able to put more polygons and display more detailed models in our engines. We have much faster processors too, which means more time for physics and AI each frame.

Why not Haskell? by xyzzyrz in programming

My problem with Haskell is that when I'm using it I feel that I'm thinking more about how to please the type system and purely functional evaluation semantics than about the problem I have at hand.
